In this video I'll show you the "Outback" rear conversion that we had done with Northstar Conversions on the Isle of Wight.
We bought a 2005 Nissan Elgrand E51, already equipped with a pop-top so that we could comfortably fit two adults and a child when camping. We gave the Elgrand a couple of test trips using it as a campervan with us just sleeping on the seats at the back with our self-inflating mattress (an Outwell 10cm double) and found it pretty comfortable, but it all felt a bit lacking as a camper - there's something about having the cooking facilities and storage there all the time that we wanted.
So we did our research and were worried that the various side conversions looked a bit pokey - like they were trying to cram too much in, with the result that the bed is just too narrow - they're also more expensive. So we decided a rear conversion was the way to go.
Having shopped around and looked at reviews for all the main converters, and the flat pack option, we reckoned that Northstar on the Isle of Wight offered the best balance of cost and quality. Add to that their offer of a loan vehicle (car or camper) while the conversion is taking place, and we felt that getting the conversion done and taking a break on the island offered a really nice way of doing it.
So, in the video I show the conversion, briefly show my campervan electric set up (Northstar were happy to work in my requirements for a LiFePO4 set up as part of the conversion) and show the set up and take-down of the bet/table etc.
I'm happy to recommend Northstar from my experience - check them out at:

Just watched your video on the Elgrand group so subscribed to you. We're converting ours by ourselves 🙂. Good to see yours 👍

Cheers mate. Just watched your video about removing the seat brackets - looks like hard work. What's your plan? Rear conversion, side or something else? I'm starting to think a little about the next conversion, which I'd like to do myself - I'd like a van with a little more space inside of I can swing it, and an electric van at that if I can find the right one..

Cheers - I'll take a look. Yes, the 2.5 doesn't have much acceleration but I'm not that fused. Sometimes if I want to overtake going uphill I think twice if it's a step one, but that's about it. Still find myself drifting up over the speed limit of I don't watch it - got caught by a speed camera a few months ago in fact.

Great review. I am contemplating having a side or rear conversion on my freshly imported Aplhard. I think costing will determine that for me but thanks for video 👍

Sounds good - similar size inside. If you can I'd recommend getting hold of one to lie down in - my take is that a rock n roll bed should be a little more comfortable, but also more cramped. However, if cost really is the thing then the rear conversion is going to be a lot cheaper every time...

Hi there! Great video! I was wondering if you know if you can remove the back seats from an Elgrand? I'm 5'8 and I'm so glad you showed that you could lay comfortably. Looking to buy one of these soon to convert.

Cheers - yes, they can be removed without difficulty. They are designed to fold up and out of the way. Northstar removed our rear seats for us but I know that people do DIY removals routinely.

Hi, enjoyed your review. We are considering a rear conversion, but slightly concerned about the width of the bench seats for sitting comfortably. What is your opinion. Love the Northstar Conversions. Thanks
@stewreviews9345
@stewreviews9345 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers - I think they're good. They are deep enough for you to sit comfortably, even with someone opposite, and you can just about fit two kids or one adult on each side of the table. With middle seats reversed you have comfortable seating for four around the table.

we don't have companies like this in the US. can you tell me what this conversion cost roughly? I may reach out to get the parts shipped to the US

Hi there - we spent a little over £3k, but that obviously included fitting. I'm pretty sure Northstar don't sell their units for DIY fitting, but you might want to try The Leisure Guys in the UK. I don't know if they ship overseas, but I know they do sell for home assembly. www.leisureguys.co.uk/Campervan_Furniture.php

Thanks - yes, we spent a little over,£3k. That didn't include the lithium batteries but did include upgraded electrics, fancy laminate finish and various bespoke cupboards etc. I think it can be done for around £2k, or considerably more of you want to really go for it.

It's the CDF 11. Very small, not quite 11 litres, but enough if you're shopping daily - just about works for us.

Hi, really enjoyed the video (just bought a Vellfire but it was a close run thing between that and an Elgrand). If you don't mind me asking who did you get insured through? 😁

No problem at all - I shopped around but in the end my own insurer made the best offer - LV. Enjoy the Vellfire - all the JDM cars are great fun.

@@stewreviews9345 Thanks for getting back to me. I'll try them in the morning. Yeah you're right about the JDM stuff. Since I started the process of importing the Vellfire I've become fascinated by them! 🤣 They seem such good value for money when compared to the VWs etc. of this world! 😁👍

Think it would have looked far better if they would have removed the old seat runner's out, and put a nice bit of new flooring in.

I hear what you are saying in terms of achieving a nice clean look. However we're still using the Elgrand as our car so we use the seats and need the runners.

It's great. I'm not a giant - tall end of average I reckon but it's so good to have a reasonably roomy car. I drove a brand new Nissan Quashqi recently and it was nice enough but just felt quite pokey - limited visibility too. The Elgrand is just easy to drive. Smooth, plenty of room and really great visibility.

I told the insurance company that I had done a camper conversion - no problem. Cost is higher than my old car insurance but not crazy high...
