I had to replace on 04 Titan a few years ago. I found and aftermarket replacement with inner bearings in place and new seals in place. So it was a drop in replacement. It was about $100 more for the part at the time than the bearings and seals but saved a ton of time, cutting and needing a press! Worked like a charm for past 4 years. I also did the vent tube fix to prevent reoccurrence.

@@patrickseekins1299 yeah, it’s much easier to buy the axle assembly like that. If you have the time and tools you can save some money but sometimes it’s just better to spend the extra and be done!

Great video. I used it as a guideline and worked perfectly. Didn't had the tool to get the axle out but since I was replacing brakes as well I mounted the old disc backwards and used a hammer on it to get the axle out. Worked like a charm.

I think I see mine leaking on my recently bought Frontier Pro-4X. I’ll probably go the route of installing a new/refurb half axle assembly rather than chiseling off/pressing on the bearings, but it’s reassuring to see that this isn’t the nightmare job I thought it was. Thanks for the video! Very helpful and well paced, you showed the repair in a concise detailed manner.

Come to find out that the Pro-4X frontier and Xterras with electronic locking rear differentials have different length shafts for left and right, and the axle shafts are WAY more expensive so I’ll be cutting and pressing the bearings in instead. Posting this mostly as info for others who have Frontiers or Xterras with the locker. Procedure is the same as yours with the same Nissan and Timken parts, but the axle assembly is a different length for Front/X’s with locker, without locker, and it appears to be the same scenario for the Titans; axle shaft lengths depend on model and whether you have a locker or not. .

Titan owners beware, the main reason the seal(s) go out is a plugged diff vent. They use a cheapo vent seal from the factory and after some time they corrode and or get dirt in it and plug and fail. Pressure builds in the diff and the weakest link is the seal, so be sure to check the vent or replace it with the updated Titan vent which has a barbed end and tubing to run up under the frame or else your seals will keep blowing. The Nissan dealer gave me the updated vent for free.

Next time you have to cut through A ring like that you should cut it on a 45° angle that illuminates all of the extra cutting you did through the bearing and also illuminates the mistake of cutting your exciter ring! Or you can just take a drill and drill right through the middle of the ring and it will snap before you even get close to Nicking the axle.Using a drill will eliminate the chance of making a mistake if you are not experienced! Also you should have taken some differential fluid and soaked that bearing right before you slid it into the axle tube!

Nissan Titan 2005 Rear axle shaft bearing cage nuts and lock washers. Anyone had an issue to tighten the old bearing cage to 87 ft-lb ? One of my bolts broke at that force. On a new bearing cage tightening-it just to 50 ft-lb it felt that is stretching to much (possible the old nut stretched?). I tightened the rest of 3 nuts to only 40 ft-lb. @Posichronic
@Posichronic 2 жыл бұрын
Mean time between failure is what the enginerds look for when designing vehicles. Unless you can build it to last forever, you have to come up with a reasonable amount of time it should last. Once that's figured out, using a bunch of components that last significantly longer than that only drives the cost up. So by the time you start seeing bearings or something fail, chances are there's a bunch of other parts that aren't in much better shape. Then you just have to hope it's easy to work on.

"it's sad that you have to destroy the bearing to get to the seal" and that's just how they want it.

m Cave yeah, it’s not a great design but it’s what we’ve got to do. At least the parts aren’t too expensive

@@TomsTinkeringandAdventures Thanks for replying. I just bought the bearings and seal for a Nissan Xterra 2005 and I'm about to do this project on saturday. So once I take off the axle I remove the raise from the housing then remove the new raise and insert it first? thanks for the video. Also I don't have a press so I have to pound in with a contraption. I called a local auto shop they want hundreds just to press the bearings in ridiculous. I also noticed that the seal was a bit loose in there is that ok?

@@tejano2828 I am not certain that the Xterra has the same axle setup. I would not suggest hammering in the bearings unless you are very careful, it's just too easy to damage them.

@@TomsTinkeringandAdventures Thanks just got one of my buddies to press them for me. but again the raise, so just take out the old raise and then press in the new raise? I see some people just bolting the axle in with the raise on the bearing thats why I ask.

The vent line on the differential? That's a good idea, I haven't looked at it. Thanks for watching.
