The arrow/airflow should point INTO the cabin or inside the car, not the front. I ran the fan for a few seconds without a filter or plastic cover and leaves flew out of the filter hole, seems like a good idea to fully clean it out. Also the plastic cover is finicky and may seem to be secured but may get loose, give it a good snug shake when youve closed it to make sure. The top clip can be a bit cumbersome to get right. Once its on right its not coming loose.

The arrow should be towards the BACK of the car.... I wasn't sure so I tested with the new filter by putting small pieces of dry leaves on the hole under the wipers and the dirt was on the engine side of the filter. So the air comes from the front goes towards the back.

yeah I don't understand, it's a CABIN air filter. Filtering the air going into the cabin. Arrows should be the other way (into the car.)

Correct. I think the factory filter arrow with FR means Front, not direction of air flow. Replacements point in direction of flow.

My original Nissan filter didn't have any arrows, but to confirm the airflow is TOWARDS the cabin, meaning the arrow/airflow points into the inside of the car, not the front. I turned on the air without a filter/cover to test airflow and leaves flew out of the hole! Seems worthwhile to do for a few seconds to fully clean the passages.

I found the location but can’t free it 😢 any pointers on getting the latch loosened?

The latch can be opened with just your fingers, pull the bottom part gently down where that little ridge is. It will open towards the passenger door (right) so pull in that direction down. Putting it back on is a little tricky to make sure it's seated properly, but overall very easy. Just make sure it's secured when you're done.
