Ry, Thank YOU so much for all your videos! I don't have experience working on cars but I decided it was time to do my own repairs/ maintenance and save money on my '05 X. Over the last two days, your videos guided me through: oil change, replacing my spark plugs and coils (removing intake manifold), fuel pump replacement, Throttle Valve/ Accelerator/ Idle Air Relearn Procedures, and clearing my engine light. I get my Oil Pressure sensor tomorrow and that will wrap up needed repairs for now. It was strange driving without the Check Engine Light on and actually being able to see how much fuel I have left in the tank. Thank You !!!

If anyone replaces their oil pressure sensor, do yourself a favor and get only the OEM sensor. All aftermarket sensors will indicate slightly low, causing the low oil pressure flickering at idle warm. It is not that much more expensive than the aftermarket ones, but will give you peace of mind and work flawlessly for the remainder of the vehicles life.

My '13 Frontier has the dummy gauge (I now know) and I just bought an '05 Xterra and went into panic mode when I noticed the "low idle pressure" reading a few days later. Excellent video, now I can sleep again!

I like your comment Andrew radio but I think you should have proved the point as I had an 08 everything was great for years and years and years never a problem just bought a very low mileage immaculate 05 it was the SEMA presentation Xterra which was bought by a judge and his wife who was a lawyer directly after the show Absolutely almost flawless the oil pressure gauge freaked me out I am a machinist been building motors for hot rods and racing motorcycles all my life so to prove this I put a mechanical gauge on it underneath and measured it I don't have 32 to 35 lb oil pressure a 2000 RPM Nissan second recommendation it pushed 60 lb at 3000 RPM it went to 70 just made all these stories about this factual with hard numbers my gauge caught is about a quarter inch from the very low mark but a mechanical gauge show 32 to 35 lb at idle wow hope this help somebody else I am fully confident now in this motor I had 370,000 MI Ray Johnson synthetics running great lifted I loved it tell some lady pulled straight out in front of me at 45 mph and I plowed her now I love this show five thank God

Dude! I just got an 05 x and just replaced my oil pressure sensor because it was pegged out max and not reading at all. Thought there was another problem with it being so low at idle when replace but figured if it was within the lines it should be okay. Thanks for putting my worries to rest! You are awesome.

Great video. Just what I was looking for. I have a 98 Pathfinder 3.3L with a similar oil pump. It was an elderly couple's for 20 years. I don't think they used it much. Low miles, 6,000 a year average, and likely wasn't driven hard ever. I think they let oil sit in it and maybe their mechanic put snake oil in it as a sales pitch. There was gummy honey-colored stuff on the refill cap. Something is causing this Pathfinder to knock at startup for 3-4 seconds and then between 1,800 and 3,300 RPM. If coasting between 1800 and 3300, it ceases. I think I caught rod bearing wear early and I replaced them. And checked the mains. Mains were good. Two rods had mild wear. No slack or slope in anything. Metal flakes stopped appearing. But still the knock between those RPM. It runs perfectly, otherwise. And the body and interior is like new. So it's a nice one I'd like to keep long-term. What do you think about this idea? If the oil isn't changed well can the valve system in the pump stick or malfunction and cause oil pressure to be insufficient? The pressure is 100% consistently poor at startup for 3 seconds and under load between 1800 to 3300 RPM. Makes no sense, this loss of pressure at fixed time, other than faulty pump. I know there is also a pan gasket leak at the front and back. I thinned the oil as an experiment to see if pressure/noise changed and oil began quickly dripping from both ends of the oil pan when it was at warm idle. I thinned the oil 50% with motor flush, which is basically kerosene. I drained out two quarts and put in 2 quarts cleaner. So I have to pull the pan anyways to fix those leaks, so might as well pull inspect and replace the pump as well. Also have to check timing as well and swap all those parts as their age is unknown. The pressure problem was present before the leaks were noted. So the big leaks are new and the problem is the exact same. Do you know of a good oil pump replacement video of my motor or very similar? I found a timing kit one, but no oil pump.

I had the problem of low oil pressure in my 05 Xterra, when I was idling the needle went lower than L and the oil light came on and when I accelerated the needle went up to the middle. The first fix was to change the oil sensor, the oil pump and the relief valve, even so the problem continued. The second fix was to change the oil gallery timing gasket and after that the needle only goes down a little before the letter L but the oil light no longer comes on.

Thanks man. When i first bought the truck the oil pressure Guage stayed dead center. Then after about 2 years the gauge stayed low at idle then in the center while I'm driving. Idk know if I have a problem or what. Mechanic suggest the same thing your saying, and found no issues with the truck that suggests damage, but it doesn't sit well knowing that for a while it sat dead center then changed to dropping at idle ... then raising while driving. Idk ... it drives fine otherwise so .. Anyway, I've been searching for answers and this has been the best info yet. Thanks!

I have an 05 and the gauge is pegged at the top. Was operating normal as you show. new OEM sensor on the way. Thought it was worth mentioning that FORD was sued for putting in a dummy switch and calling it a gauge. It was really just an on/off switch.

Hi Ry I have a 2006 Xterra off-road. I've had it for about 4 years now. I have never noticed the oil gauge move since owning it, once it's running it sits around the middle. Yesterday i noticed after driving 10 kilometers that when i would brake the needle would drop, and as i accelerated it would return to midrange. Today i drove to work, which is around 11 kilometers and the needle didn't move from mid range at all once it was started. Any thoughts on this phenomenon lol, i would really appreciate it. great vid! couple points that might be worth mentioning. I love the actual gauge, it tells you more about what is actually going on under the hood. also, if the gauge pegs out high, but you dont have the oil indicator light, that is a sign that the oil pressure sensor has failed and needs to be replaced. I had an 08 350z and now a 06 Xterra and they both had'have the real guages.

Had the same problem in the lubrication indicator went up to the maximum and went down almost to the limit below, change the lubrication sensor and the problem was solved, this is a very common fault in the xterra 05,06,07, is not something To worry too much, but if you change the sensor one is quieter.

Hi I have a 06 pathfinder preassure was fine all of a sudden when hot needle started to drop and go up been like that for about 2 years now. I change the oil every 5000km. When accelerating normal pressure when at idle dropped. Today it started dropping lower and oil light would come on for a sec or 2 then off when going again. No leaks noticed under the truck. Any advice? Weather is also hotter than usual about 38 degrees Celsius. Could it be oil screen clog?

Mine does this but the oil light flickers as well when the needle gets to the low side but still I'm between the H and L. Is that still the sensor?

Hey! I know this is an older video, and I love all of them because I have an ‘06 that’s almost exactly like yours, so this is all super helpful. My question is, in mine, when it’s cold out, the oil pressure stays around the middle until I give it some gas, then it spikes almost all the way up until the engine warms up. Is this the same concept, or should I get a new sensor?

I have a 2006 and the needle never moves from the center. I guess that explains it, it’s a dummy one LOL. Maybe I need to add an external one if possible.

my 05’ pathfinder shows that oil light all the time but i change my oil every 3,000 miles. also, it has never broke down or shown blue smoke from its exhaust. so is it possible the gauges oil pressure sending unit needs to be replaced? that’s what the dealer said but they also offered to do it for $200 and i said no because that’s so not necessary for like a 15 minute job. i feel like i need to change it out but i don’t want to waste time and end up not fixing that issue. any ideas?

Hi Ry, as always thanks for your awesome videos! I have a 2006 Xterra and I just noticed that the oil pressure gage is no longer operating. The needle falls when the engine is turned off; however as I'm turning on the engine the needle rapidly goes up to the high position and stays there. I thought because it was cold out, I should drive around a bit but even after a 20 min drive, the needs stays on the high position. I took it to auto zone and they sold me a replacement coolant sensor (which they stated is the exact same part for an oil pressure sensor...idk). I'm not having any other symptoms or lights on the dash, so I'm not sure if the sensor is truly bad or the oil pump needs replacing. Have you seen this before? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

If what you are saying is true, why are part numbers for gauges and oil pressure sending unit the same all the way thru to 08 on all 4 liters. If they changed gauge or sending unit it would have a different part number than the 05 and half of 06

Great point, however, if after reaching running temp, if your not getting at least 40 psi of oil pressure your engine is probably bad not oil pump!!!!!!!

Hello Ry, thanks for the video. I still have pressure issues. I just rebuilt my vq40 engine from my 2005 Nissan Xterra. All necessary parts were replaced, including the oil pressure sensor and pump. Even after doing this, the oil pressure drops until the dash light turns on when the car is hot and stopped at 1000 RPM. What else do you think I should check before getting crazy... I am desperate...it's been several months since I am struggling with this problem....thanks for any help

Hi Ry. I have a 06 pathfinder but its oil pressure is truly a problem. Or so I think. The gauge at idle is bouncing and sometimes red light comes on. I just bought it and know she said low oil pressure problem. Its leaking some oil by filter so I guess oil cooler gasket might be bad but would this cause low pressure problem? It's really weird cause I have been driving it and never had it come lower than the middle.

If the oil pressure pump is very low and Beside the seals and water pump, what about the crankshaft metals bearings?. Do you think those are damaged too?

I have the same issue oil pressure goes down like normal (as what you said) but sometimes the oil light comes on and once you gas it then it disappears. What could be the reason? Oil sensor? Oil pump? Or actual engine? Mention that the engine don't give you any noises it runs and sounds normal. A little info will help. Thanks

I'm suspect. The original in mine never moved below half. It did fluctuate slightly with acceleration and such. One day it started doing this. I replaced it and it went back to how the original acted. I have an 06

Mine goes to the High side if not warmed up, & Never drops below center anymore..... Also the 2nd time its done this even at low speed & Rpm going to the Xtreme high side 1-2000 rpm? Did it once before & quit, No engine codes, smoke or oil loss???

Wish my '12 xterra had a real gauge. Somewhere along the way they converted it to be a dummy gauge and the needle sits right in the middle. mind as well have no gauge and just a low oil warning light like most other cars. Same goes for the coolant gauge, needle won't actually get to the hallway mark until you overheat then it goes full max. Again mind as well just be a warning light.. Gauges look cool but lack function

It's the wrong oil pressure sensor there is one for the dummy light and a different one for the gauge

It's not supposed to fluctuate. You need to use a genuine OEM oil pressure sensor and the oil pressure will show stable. Don't use cheap ebay parts on a Nissan.
