Ústrednou dominantou najstaršieho slovenského mesta Nitra je Nitriansky hrad, postavený na mieste mohutného slovanského hradiska, sídla nitrianskych kniežat a veľkomoravských panovníkov. Dnes je sídlom nitrianskeho biskupstva.
Postavili ho v 11. storočí. Tvorí ho niekoľko stavebných celkov. Jeho jadrom je katedrála s priľahlou biskupskou rezidenciou.
Najstaršou zachovanou časťou katedrály je románsky Kostol sv. Emeráma, ktorého vznik sa datuje do 11. až 12. storočia. Po požiari v druhej polovici 13. storočia ho prestavali a po zničení vojskom Matúša Čáka Trenčianskeho v roku 1317 pripojili k novostavbe gotického kostola. Odvtedy slúžil ako tzv. hodnoverné miesto kapituly a neskôr ako klenotnica katedrálneho pokladu. Dnes spolu s Horným a Dolným kostolom vytvára najhodnotnejší objekt hradu - biskupskú katedrálu.
Pôvodne gotický Horný kostol postavili v rokoch 1333 až 1335. O tri storočia neskôr k nemu pripojili Dolný kostol, s ktorým ho spája široké schodisko. Dnešný vzhľad katedrála získala v rokoch 1710 až 1736, pričom z tohto obdobia pochádza aj zariadenie interiéru. Medzi jeho najvzácnejšie pamiatky patrí hlavný oltár s motívom Snímania z kríža v Dolnom kostole od rakúskeho sochára J. Perneggera vytvorený podľa obrazu D. Volteru.
Pôvodne gotický Biskupský palác, ktorý stojí vedľa biskupskej katedrály, získal neskorobarokovú podobu tiež v prvej polovici 18. storočia.
Návštevníkov hradného areálu zaujme aj jeho vonkajšie opevnenie, ktorého najstaršie časti pochádzajú z románskeho a gotického obdobia. Legendárna je najmä Vazilova veža, ku ktorej sa viaže povesť o väznení uhorského kniežaťa Vazula.
Pre návštevníkov je sprístupnený areál hradu a biskupská Katedrála sv. Emeráma.

The oldest preserved part of the cathedral is the Romanesque Church of St. Emeráma, the creation of which dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries. The originally Gothic Upper Church was built between 1333 and 1335. Three centuries later, the Lower Church was added to it, which is connected to it by a wide staircase. The cathedral got its present appearance between 1710 and 1736, while the interior design also dates from this period. Among its rarest monuments is the main altar with the motif of the Descent from the Cross in the Lower Church by the Austrian sculptor J. Pernegger, created after a painting by D. Voltaire.
The originally Gothic Bishop's Palace, which stands next to the bishop's cathedral, also acquired a late-baroque appearance in the first half of the 18th century.
Visitors to the castle grounds will also be interested in its outer fortifications, the oldest parts of which date from the Romanesque and Gothic periods. Vasil's Tower is especially legendary, to which the rumor of the imprisonment of the Hungarian prince Vazul is connected.
