I am controlling hooded crows on a hill farm to help protect sheep and lambs during lambing time in the spring. Hooded crows will pray on young lambs or even fully grown sheep who can get stuck on their backs when heavily pregnant unable to protect themselves. The crows will generally go for the soft tissue areas like the eyes tongue and anus and i have seen the damage they can do myself, this wont kill the sheep right away but will leave it weak and injured with a long suffering death unless found by the farmer.
Magpies and crows will also take any eggs or fledglings of ground nesting birds that they find.
This can legally be done through the Department Of Agriculture, Environment And Rural Affairs Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985 (As Amended) Licence.
This Licence hereby authorises for the purpose of preventing the spread of disease and preventing serious damage to livestock, foodstuffs for livestock, crops, vegetables, fruit, growing timber and fisheries ANY AUTHORISED PERSON to kill or take any of the following birds:-
Crow, Jackdaw, Magpie, Pigeon (Wood), Pigeon (Feral), Rook, Sparrow (House), Starling.
This was all filmed on land that i have permission to shoot on with legally held fire arms in a way to nether prolong or glorify the death of the birds.
Rifle CZ 527 Varmint .17 Hornet
Scope Meopta 4-16x44 Tactical
Ammo .17 Hornet with 20gr Vmax hand loads
Bush Wear The Bush chair hide
Range Finder Bushnell Scout 1000

I had a 17ackley hornet in a Bruno ZKW465, that at an incredible gun. 1 of those shouldn't have sold it ones. I recently purchased a custom 17 mach1V rifle from the 1970's built on a Rem XP100 action. Another Tac driver. My fox gun. Great to see people are keeping the interest in 17's alive. Well done. Thank you.

Yeah when i was talking of buying one people told me no go for a bigger calibre it will buck the wind better but the little 17 Hornet does exactly what i bought it for at sensible ranges and its quieter too, sure i would like a shorter barrel and if i knew i had to shoot at longer ranges at the likes of a fox I'd lift my .222.

Great stuff David, at least your patience paid off. I’m back in the sheds as the birds are back on the Calf feeders again, it’s funny how we go through the same routines every year👍🏼🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Yeah started hitting the rabbits there on a barley field and the jackdaws on a couple of farms hitting the feeders as well, seems to be once the young ones leave the nest they head straight for the cattle sheds, so hopefully I'll have some decent footage for my other channel HuntersVermin.

It might have been a better idea to set up on a big open field with no near by trees for the birds to land in so they would be more inclined to land on the ground.

I did think about a .22 hornet but when the 17 hornet came about with that fast little bullet i thought it would be great for the crows and so far it has been.
@NurkePL
@NurkePL 2 жыл бұрын
@@NitroHV Guess the 17 could come in subsonic and supressed might make it a good round, when I was shooting the .22 there was only copper jacket hollow point, so it was 'fire it and wait half an hour for everything to come back' In the end I traded it for a 4 shot semi Beretta 12 gauge, No5 for bird and AAA for fox, worked quite well till we werent allowed to have it on a shotgun cert

Something I have found that works great as a decoy for crows is about a 2 and a half foot toy snake in an area of freshly cut grass. Tie it to a tent peg with monofilament fishing line or one may carry it off. Although I don't know what snakes you have in N.Ireland , but I use a black one so it stands out.
@NitroHV
@NitroHV Жыл бұрын
That sounds like a great idea unfortunately there are no snakes here in N'Ireland but it might still work.

@NitroHV
@NitroHV 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah Lilgun does seem to give good results but also has its problems, I'm using Vectan SP3 which is also a shotgun powder, it was the only powder i could get at the time really though it does seem to work ok but i couldn't find any load data for the hornet so i started of with very low charge weights and brought them up slowly to get the speed i wanted to match the factory Hornaday loads.

Good shooting, and unbelievable patience! I suspect the camera angle was above your eye-line, and that fox was following a dip that was mostly dead ground for you. In any case, when I'm in my Bush hide my viewing window is about 6" square, so anything outside of that could be dancing the conga and I'd never see it!
@NitroHV
@NitroHV 2 жыл бұрын
Like you i had the opening in front of the hide closed down as small as posable to stop the birds seeing any movement which gives me a very narrow view so since it didn't cross directly Infront of me i never saw it. If anything I actually was expecting it to appear from the top right of the field as there is an old fox hole in those gorse bushes.

David, do you not think the crows would have landed if there was no decoys down?? .just a dead rabbit.
@NitroHV
@NitroHV 2 жыл бұрын
Yes as I've used a dead rabbit successfully on its own in the past but i like adding a decoy as it will ether give the crows confidence to land or make them react to a strange bird in their territory but in this case they seemed to react a little too well also some of them may have remembered the last time they saw a set up like this were i shot 8 of them and that's why they were a bit hesitant to land.

@NitroHV
@NitroHV 2 жыл бұрын
The stock is from a compony called Form Rifle Stocks in the UK. and i didn't shoot at the birds in the trees because they were too far away for the 17 Hornet its because there was no safe back stop as here in the UK we do not shoot at anything in trees with ether a centre fire or rim fire as its too dangerous.

I'm guessing you've never hunted crows. You've probably never seen a lamb with its eyes pecked out either. If you had, you'd understand why both the camouflage and the time dedicated to controlling crow numbers were necessary. Time and experience have taught me that judging from a point of ignorance is never a good idea, so I'd recommend trying to break the habit and taking the opportunity to learn before being hateful. Enjoy your day.

No I’ve never had to shoot crows but we have run 2200sheep on the Breckland. Over 30 years and never seen a lambs eyes pecked out,we’ve had dead lambs eaten by foxes but never had t9 shoot anything,making sensational claim:s about eyes being pecked out ,all sounds like nothing more than an excuse to kill things. 🤔🤨
@juleswhicker
@juleswhicker 2 жыл бұрын
@@garygilden9203 I'm glad to hear it. I think many predator populations can develop localised hunting strategies they then pass on across generations. For a while some of the foxes local to me would group together to chase pregnant ewes around the fields, apparently in the hope of provoking a miscarriage; later on, another group would work around the flock, apparently looking for the ewe with the weakest maternal bond, whose lamb they would then cut out from the flock and kill. On another farm, the crows would watch for a ewe giving birth and then mob it, driving it off and blinding the new-born, which the ewe would then leave to die and the crows would consume as carrion. Some intensive predator control later and the cycle was broken. Undoubtedly many of the crows and foxes trapped and shot to achieve this weren't directly responsible, but a truly selective approach is rarely possible. BTW, I'm sure there are people who are just looking for an excuse to kill things, but the people I know have better goals, and take our pleasure from reduced livestock losses, increased numbers of songbirds and ground-nesting birds, and thriving forestry, as well as from achieving the most humane kills possible.
