Nitro OBD2 unit with interesting circuitry

Another Nitro OBD2 "Performance chip tuning box".
While there are actually real systems for adjusting the engine management settings on a small number of older vehicles, the majority of manufacturers seem to lock their engine control systems down quite tightly to avoid warranty and liability issues.
This is one of the many fake ones for people who succumb to the placebo power of blinky lights, and convince themselves that their car is more powerful and using less fuel. Some of these units do actually have microcontrollers in them that put on a fairly convincing "data exchange" light show like a network or modem. But the more recent ones have cost cut by implementing simple flashing light circuits. This one actually uses quite an interesting circuit that was well worth exploring, as a nice example of an op-amp oscillator.
Note that this unit poses a continuous 7mA current draw and will potentially assist in running your battery flat over time.
I love the fact that the button can be used to stall people looking for a refund by implying that they haven't used it correctly or put it in the right "mode". There's nothing quite like time and inconvenience to help people get over buyer's remorse.
"Press the reset button and give it another month to learn your driving characteristics."
"Press and hold the button for five seconds to change mode and try it again for a month."
"press the button five times quickly to put it into compatibility mode, and give it another month."
Temu are not a sponsor, I don't use their app or pay by card. I'm just having a Temu-moment in my quest to find dangerous or dubious devices from online sellers.
They don't use child slaves as they are just a selling platform like amazon and aliexpress.
Yes they exploit the postal system loophole like Wish and AlieXpress. The International Postal Union (not a labour union) controls that and appears to have dropped the ball.

4:19 Yes. Can attest. I installed one in my electric car and haven't had to put gas in it since. Be warned, though, a friend used the wrong setting and it converted his car into a diesel. The device also consumes a small amount of blinker fluid to flash the LEDs, but the cost per year is less than the fuel saved.

I’ve met a few people who absolutely swear by these things. When I was working as a mechanic, I had a handful of vehicles come in with dead batteries because these were plugged into the OBD2 port and drawing power. It might not kill the battery overnight, but some of them have relatively high power draw, and when that is drawing continuously for several days while the car sits (like when on vacation) it kills the battery. I had one customer in particular who refused to remove the stupid thing and instead wanted us to hardwire a battery charger to their vehicle so they could just plug it in when the vehicle was going to sit. I told them to get lost.

About 30 years ago or so, I had a mate who asked me if he could park his car in my garage while he went away on holiday. Just before we locked the garage, he opened the boot. When I asked why, he said it was to dry it out (don't ask me why). Anyway, 2 weeks into his vacation, he frantically calls me and said he just realised the light would have been on the whole time the boot was open. When I went to check, there was no light and the battery was completely flat. So I had to disconnect the battery and take it to a garage. It was too far gone so I ended up buying a new battery (which he wasn't happy about). So there's more than one way to drain your car battery without thinking. Leaving a door open would probably do the same. Note: You could have told him to unplug it when not in use. Or see an electronics guy to put an on/off switch in it. 😆

I imagine because this is just an absolutely do-nothing scam, there's relatively little attention from the law, but if some QC issue caused it to create a malfunction in vehicles, there's probably a much higher risk of there being some enforcement, so they just go for the simpler, safer and probably cheaper approach. Although stuff like fully stock EVs burning to the ground and other issues with various vehicles often doesn't get much punishment so who knows.

About fifty to sixty years ago, you could increase your car's performance simply by adding "Go Faster Stripes" down the sides of your car. For rally performance, you had the power performance stripes which were much wider and went over the roof! Much the same effect could be achieved by bolting on a pair of Cibie Oscars to your front bumper - Two pair, and you got turbo halogen power! Similarly, fitting a "drainpipe" exhaust was said to add an extra 7.568 mph in top gear. A few years ago, it was the "Turbo Waste Gate" but only if it made a ridiculous PING-PHWEE sound every time you changed gear! It's all in the mind, only these electronic gadgets are more plausible because it has a silicon chip inside it, and you can't see what it does, and therefore, no one can prove you wrong.🤦🔧🙎😊😁😁

Good thing you did. If in fact it was dumping more fuel in, your AF ratio would be too rich resulting in less power. If it was doing the opposite without proper calculations, it would make your AF way too lean, giving you more power but also knock and a good chance of damaging your engine.
@cheyannei5983
@cheyannei5983 10 ай бұрын
@@brandonroeder2461Too lean actually makes nitrous oxide as a combustion product, which doesn't get scrubbed or converted by a gasoline exhaust system and is a much worse GHG than CO2. It's why there was a hard ban on 'lean burn' cruising modes for cars. It's better to just run slightly rich than make any amount of NO. It's probably why Mazda's SkyActiv-X engine isn't in America yet, as it was designed to run lean for maximum fuel economy, though the system still has benefit if on the rich side of stoichiometric.

Back in the day they had fuel line magnets that alligned fuel to somehow be more combustable. And of course we had grounding strap that discharged static electricity that occurs while driving to ground reducing drive resistance in some miraculous fashion. This device is just evolution of those contraptions. I wonder why people dont realize if there was any way to get better fuel economy by magnets or blinking lights manufacturers would already be doing it.

There are actual modules interfacing with OBD that reflash the ECU that aren't a scam (but cost no where near what these go for), e.g. Cobb Accessport. They don't have hyperbolic claims of 300% more horsepower though.

@@zaxcomp The difference between those and these is that they are specific to the vehicle and are usually to enable the flashing of tunes, not the "learning" of tunes. 99% of ecus are READ ONLY. No odbii device should be able to improve power & efficiency as they are on the opposite sides of the diagram.

There are cars out there that actually have an operating mode where they consume no gas, while still able to accelerate - even up hill! They’re called hybrids. One day, someone will develop a car that never requires fuel. Oh wait, those are called EVs. Triple the hp? Well that’s just 3 EVs tied together with a rope! 😅

It would be interesting to review a "V8 Racer" module that goes in the cigarette lighter. It's a device for people with a Golf to think they have the R32 - it puts a fake engine noise that varies with alternator voltage over the radio in the car! You can make a diesel sound like a coach or fiat 500 like a Porsche. They are fun items but clever in the way they work.

I talked to a guy some time back who was adamant that his diesel car used less fuel on biodiesel than on fossil diesel and that he could prove it. I told him it's probably because his driving style i less aggressive when he uses biodiesel (less energy dense) and that is why the car uses less fuel. That is probably the reason this kind of device can make an apparent difference to their user without actually doing anything. The power of change in behaviour is not to be underestimated.

Ex mechanic, ecen though most of these do nothing other than turn on a light on the dongle, or flash it. Some can do major damage if they do actually upload any code or just do damage to the wiring. Ive tuned vehicles (alot honestly) via the obd2 port (and the more oldschool way inc mechanic upgrades, jetting etc), the tool itself is usually...."cheap" it is either an obd2 to usb, or obd2 to serial (though they should be rare now), the expensive part is the software, they tend to be make specific (GM, Ford, Honda, Nissan etc) some are even engine specific, well really its more to do with the ECU but not that important. The tricky part is knowing what you can change, how much by and what it all does. An example, you just put in a cam, injectors, larger throttle body, manifold and turbo. Where do you start? What do you change? How do you know your changes are safe? Are working? Or doing what you want? Sure you can just advance the timing and dump more fuel in, but you could be flooding it, or actually making it run WORSE than if you didnt touch the tune. So with that said, If your OBD2 tune tool that just plugs in and actually makes changes, how do you know its going to actually help? It could grenade the motor or make it run way worse. Some from my experience can do electrical or mechanical damage. Yes some do exist that you can just plug and play, but youll find they arent cheap, they are usually very specific on what they can be used on (from memory the VD landcruisers have a few, but tend to be split between the years, the series and also tend to be made to order, you give the company your specs, if you have made changes to it, you want more torque, better fuel efficiency etc)
