NIU KQi2 Pro Electric Scooter disassembly / repair guide - Display and Throttle (error 03 fix)

This guide will show you how to disassemble the display on the NIU KQi2 Pro and replace the throttle(accelerator). This can be useful in case your scooter displays Error 03 and you want to replace your throttle without sending the whole scooter in for repairs.

If you don’t have scooter repair experience and don’t own the needed tools, I would recommend you to get the scooter repaired by a qualified scooter technician.

I have a problem if you can help I'd very much appreciate it! I also have the 03 code problem, I have also replaced the throttle. Yet I still cannot get out of e save mode. ( I bought it second hand in good condition and I also can't find the device on the app) I used it for a week and now it won't get out of E save. Any suggestions? @Lantea13

@@Darkthunder5299 If the e-save mode is blinking, you need to turn off the dynamic mode in the app. Otherwise you should be able to switch between modes by pressing the button on the display. If you bought it second hand try and see if you can connect it in the NIU app to your NIU account, the previous owner should have removed it from their account before selling it. If they did not you need to contact them, if possible and ask them to do it, or you need to contact NIU with proof of purchase and they might be able to help.

@Lantea13 I appreciate the help, the issue with the app is, when I try to bind or connect the device it asks me to name it etc and I always get 1771 pop up. I wasn't using the app before and it worked fine. The e-save is not flashing, I just cannot get the e-save to go away when pressing the button. Thank you again for your help

Thank you for doing this. I had this problem once already and got a warranty repair for it. However the throttle replaced by the warranty repair was defective too! Had to send it in again to get it fix!

That is unfortunate that even the replacement broke. Hopefully the next replacement is the new version where they fixed the problems that were resulting in some throttles failing.

Yes, that is the only way. If you take your time and remove it carefully the double sided tape should stay intact so you can just stick it back on without having to replace it.

I freaked out when I got mine my ebike was stolen and this is my replacement. So I assemble it with out connecting the screen travel mode as they call it any ways figured it out love this thing I have the pro version.

Nice guide! I did this today without the string, if you feed the clip into the handle you can use the brake wire to guide it in. Getting that grommet out was a huge pain.

To anyone who was foolish enough to not put a STRING through. Please, find a STRING thin enough to pull through with the old cable. Doing this with out one is... kind of a nightmare at the moment 😔

The throttle change is a pretty simple process, so even if it does happen it should be an easy repair.

Hello..great videos. My NIU KQI3 pro power button stopped working. It won’t turn on the screen…do you have any idea for trouble shooting or fix on the issue. Would taking off the plastic cover be a good way to start? Thank you.

That is what I would try first to see if the button is broken or just jammed. But if your scooter is still under warranty I would suggest you first contact NIU support before trying a DIY fix. Edit: It can also be a controller issue if the button works but the scooter is not turning on. Best is to contact NIU for warranty repair.

Do you mean the rubber gasket the cables go through or the rubber 'cup' that holds all the cables together? Maybe if you upload a photo to imgur it would be easier to help.

Nice videos. can you make a video in which you open the front light. to see how it's built inside? The background is that the outer light ring is deactivated in Germany. only the lamp in the middle lights up. maybe i just have to lay an additional cable to the control panel? Best regards

The wiring is likely identical and the light behaviour is set by the custom German firmware. But that is just my guess. I can look into it. Haven't considered disassembling the light, but if its not glued together I can give it a try. No promises :)

Doing this tonight on my kqi 3, what double sided tape did u use to reseal? And is there a specific reseal process?

I used the original one as it survived the removal with just slight damage. To seal it back up I just pushed the cover back on, it has held fine ever since.

Yes it should work on the KQi3 Pro as well, the process is nearly identical, there is just an extra rubber plug from some photos I have seen.

You can order spare parts from NIU service partner at shop.besender.com/store/ if the part you need is not listed fill out this form niu.besender.com/form and they will reply to you with the cost of the parts you need. If you are requesting parts under warranty, try and ask them to send you the part if you know how to do the repair yourself. NIU mentioned on reddit a while back that they should be willing to do that, if you can do the repair yourself. Not sure if their policy has changed since then.

Hi! I recently received my kqi2 pro and I already got the 03 error after using it for a day sadly enough. I’m want to replace the throttle but I don’t want to contact NIU since they are gonna give me the bad quality throttle again. I was trying to look for some throttle on Amazon I’ve found some but I don’t know if they will be able to fit with the connector from the kqi2 pro. Could you please help me the find a throttle from Amazon that would fit the Kqi 2 pro

Sorry to hear you already had a throttle issue with your scooter. I would still advise you to contact NIU and get the free replacement throttle under warranty. If you want to try a different 3rd party throttle, take a look at these photos of the NIU throttle imgur.com/a/L4QkiBC the NIU throttle uses 3 wires, so in theory a throttle with similar 3 wire setup should work, but I have not tested any 3rd party throttles so other than that I can't guarantee which ones from Amazon would work and which would not.

I got it from NIU. You should contact their customer support since your scooter is still under warranty. NIU have mentioned (here old.reddit.com/r/kqi3/comments/vzdnip/brand_new_kqi3_error_03_code_after_less_than_10km/ig7x23s/) that it should be possible to just request a spare part under warranty and do the repair yourself.

Two year warranty is included in the price of the scooter. Disregarding that you should still contact NIU support and they should help you out if you prefer to buy a new throttle instead or a warranty claim. NIU said that in the future they want to have more parts available direct on their website, unfortunately for now the throttle is not available without contacting them first.

Error 12 is a motor hall sensor fault, for that its best to contact NIU and let them sort it out under warranty.

I did it with my kqi1 and it worked great. Unfortunately, on the kqi2/kqi3 since the brake line shares the internal cable routing with the brakes, it seems nearly impossible to pass through the throttle cable.

On the KQi2 it is a bit finicky to get the cable through, but using the string method as shown helps a lot, and you can also try and use a pair of tweezers to get the connector through the last hole into the display section, which can take a bit of time.

If you don't use a string to fish the cable through you will have a really hard time getting the cable through the handlebars. Its possible but will take you a lot longer.

If you need a replacement throttle its best to contact NIU or their service partner besender for parts they don't yet have listed on their website. If your throttle broke it should be covered by your warranty. Just ask them if they could send you the replacement part, if you are comfortable replacing it yourself.

Sorry not sure how you could do such modifications. Also keep in mind that modifying the scooter and messing with the electonics or firmware outside their normal function will void your warranty.

The only way to unlock the scooter when it shows the two red bars is to use the NIU app to unlock it. If that does not work NIU support might be able to help. But I am not aware of other way to unlock the scooter.

I tried with my kqi2 it was hard but manageable to get through with the right tools through the internal cable routing. I REALLY NEED help with kqi3 which not only shares the housing with the brake but has a gasket i can't remove. HELP

Hi, sorry for the late reply; that sounds like some sort of internal bug in the display; did you try to disconnect and reconnect the main display cable that runs through the stem? That might reset it, but if that does not help it might be best to contsct NIU and their technicins might have a solution.

Hi I was watching your video. Anyway on that red connector! On mine I happen to have the other red connector. Female and a male. Do I have to connect them together. By the way’ I’m trying to figure my KQi3 kickstart scooter pro. Anyway to make my case shorter. My son was trying some IDK 🤷🏼‍♂️ he calls it tricks. Since then the scooter is tricking me now it doesn’t work’ the two red dots’ the No.3 blinking also this (❗️) and the beeping sound always go (on) the minute I press power. And the scooter feels lock. It wouldn’t go’ if I try to move it all those red lights goes on again. Even if power is off. And by the way I decided to open it back up and disconnect all the wires. Anyway the lights on back snapped off and the wires r visible so I taped it up. I need that break light 4 safety. Anyway I would appreciate it if you could help me out. Thank you 🙏 for your video.

The red connector should be for the second brake lever, the KQi3 has two brakes so both connectors are used. The 03 blinking with !, means a problem with the throttle, you will need to get a new throttle and replace it as shown in the video; if you messed with the connectors check that you have everything connected correctly; if your scooter is still under warranty contact NIU for repair, or if you can do it yourself they can send you a replacement throttle. You can contact them on Global-Service@niu.com or by filling out a repair request and describe the problem you are having here niu.besender.com/ "two red dots" and "the scooter feels lock" That could mean that you have the scooter lock activated through the NIU mobile app, open the app and check if you can de-activate the scooter lock, see here for example kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jNR_mZNm3rrLoH0.html "lights on back snapped off and the wires r visible so I taped it up. I need that break light 4 safety" You can order spare parts, in this case the back fender from NIU and replace the broken one. You can order spare parts from shop.besender.com/store/ or if they are not listed fill out the form here niu.besender.com/form and they should send you a quote for the spare parts you need. That is how I ordered some spare parts back in March 2023. Hope this helps.

I haven't seen anyone try that. In theory anything is possible, but it would require extensive modifications. The better option is to just buy a dual motor scooter, or wait a bit and maybe NIU will release a KQi4 or whatever it will be called that will be more powerful.

When I filled out the form and needed a spare part that was not listed, they replied within 1-2 business days. Give that a try.

You could try to spray some silicone lubricant on the side where the two halfs of the throttle slide on each other, it should help to lubricate the moving parts so they move easier.

Last time I ordered parts was March 2023 from Besender in EU, had no problem ordering the spare parts I needed back then. Here is a guide from NIU on buying spare parts, that might help: "For the customer from the NA region, if you feel comfortable changing the spare part yourself, please follow the below-mentioned steps: 1. Please go to www.niu.com/us and scroll down to the bottom; 2. Click [After Sales] and follow the instructions on the pop-up window; 3. Based on the KQi2 manual, error code 33 is a "Battery open-circuit or imbalance warning" and it advises you to contact NIU for support.

Hi I had your same problem ( error 03 ) they sent me the piece and I tried to assemble it following your video step by step but the problem is that the display does not turn on. got to the point where you plugged the cable in to test if it worked before closing the display. I saw that yours had 3 charging notches, could it be that my display doesn't turn on because it's empty?

Hi, the three battery level dots just indicate how charged up the main scooter battery is; if your scooter battery was charged before the disassembly it should still be charged. If you had the battery fully depleted (which I doubt) you need to charge the scooter for it to turn on. The display does not have any battery inside it, its all powered by the main scooter battery. Check all the cable connections again and make sure everything is connected correctly and try again. If the scooter is charged and all the cables in the display are connected as shown it should work, if all you did is swap out the throttle. @@yassinvegas7324 From what you said in your original message, you only had the error03, which is a throttle error. So if NIU sent you a new throttle and you replaced it without damaging any of the other wires, the scooter should work. Did you have any battery or other problems/errors before the error03? If not, and if all the wire connections are correctly connected it should work.

@@Lantea13 no, only error 03, I've never encountered battery problems also because I just bought the scooter. I got it in september and used it for a month and a half. in mid-October I got error 03 on the display and I haven't used it since. the display was initially fine even before packing to ship. they had told me to send it to them then I had problems with the courier and they told me they would send me the piece. two days ago the piece arrived, I mounted it and I encountered this problem. maybe my only mistake was to verify that the display was fine before starting to take everything apart. so now I don't know if I caused the problem when I disassembled the display or it was already present.

The specifications of the display can be found on the spare parts page shop.besender.com/store/model/detail?id=41 it is the same size as the one on the KQi2. Dashboard: Weight (lb): 0.08 Long (in): 3.543 Width (in): 1.575 High (in): 0.787 As for the Controller: 9cm x 5.5cm x 3.5cm

Sorry but I haven't come across this problem before, so not sure what might be causing the problem. Possibly a controller issue. Make sure your charger is correctly plugged in and undamaged. That wire is for the rear brake on scooters like the KQi3 that also use a rear brake.

Sorry to hear that. Luckily you have a two year warranty to rely on, so NIU should fix it for you, but I fully understand it is annoying having to send it in for repair and be without a scooter for some time.

Best and probably easiest thing would be to try and contact the seller and ask them to remove the scooter from their NIU account, I believe you can do that in the app. The only other option might be to contact NIU and if you have proof of purchase they might be able to help on their end, but thats a long shot.

If you had an error 03 and replaced the throttle with a new one and connected all wires correctly, it should no longer show error 03 and work. What problem are you having? Still error 03 with the new throttle?

Not that I know of. On the NIU scooters it seems to be all software/firmware controlled, not a simple wire cut as on some other scooters that use the QS-S4 display/throttle.

Error 03 is a fault with the thumb throttle. You will need to get it replaced. Just contact NIU for warranty support and they should take care of it.

lots of people whining about this issue on KQI2, so I thought I would watch your video before mine actually broke. More serviceable then I thought. Wondering if I should just go ahead any buy one of these so I will have it when mine breaks? I have about 600KM on my scooter.

The throttle is a fairly cheap part, so its not a bad idea to have one just in case you need it. When I was ordering some other spare parts several months back I also decided to buy an extra throttle. If you use your scooter for commuting and can't afford downtime for service repairs, having few common spare parts on hand is a good idea in my opinion.

Don't buy it for 600 euros thrown away....... In 6 months I have sent it 4 times to Germany for repair, they don't have points in Italy for repair. They don't speak Italian, but Italian money is convenient for them. Unreliable people and poor product. With the old xiaomi scooter, not all the failures I encountered on this scooter had happened to me. Bought on 11/26/2022 and in July 2023 it broke for the 4/5th time because in the last ticket, in addition to the second breakage of the ignition button, error 03 was added to the accelerator. Buy other brands.

Sorry to hear about the problems you had with your KQi2 scooter. Did NIU manage to fix it and do you have your scooter back? What were the other problems apart from the last one you mentioned with the error03 and power button?

@@Lantea13 The first failure after a month the rear wheel made a noise and stopped after a few meters. The second time it didn't charge the battery anymore. The third time, just returned from the repair, it didn't turn on because the switch failed. Last time I no longer sent the scooter but I always requested spare parts for the display with the switch and then the accelerator with which it gave the famous error 03. I hope to make it clear that it is not a serious and unreliable company. Greetings

After that many issues I completely understand the frustration. Maybe after the second problem they should have replaced the whole scooter, it seems like something went wrong during the QC on your unit or just really bad luck having that many problems with one scooter.

If it was a serious company, after the third time I send a vehicle to be repaired they would have returned it with a brand new. I have shipped the vehicle all the times to germany and wasted 2 months of time only in the shipments.
