Niv-Mizzet, Parun EDH Deck Tech

The Izzet League is slinging bolts and countering spells in full force with Niv-Mizzet, Parun as your commander. This is my Curioisty Combo deck focused around Niv-Mizzet, Parun's triggered ability and the salt around the table as you continue to draw and deal damage.

You're more then welcome. Izzet spellslinger has a lot of flexibility and has come far over the years.

Imperial Recruiter is great because you can tutor out Laboratory Maniac (for an auto win to decking out) or Tandem Lookout for the infinite combo, as well as grabbing Thassa's Oracle for those who choose to do so.

Great suggestion! Also happens to get some of the other value creatures as well. It's nice that it also had the recent reprinting.

Very noice. I went more with the pinging route with electrostatic field, guttersnipe, and firebrand archer along with a couple others like it. Also added Torbran to make Niv ping for 3 instead of 1. Also I put in Shark Typhoon instead of Metalurgic Summonings bc the tokens have flying and u can cycle it as well if you need to. Better value imo.

I also think this is a valid strategy to go down as well. Especially if you don't want to play the curiosity style combo. With curiosity it doesn't matter whether it's 3 damage per ping or 1, it'll still win. If you don't have it then I agree, putting out that kind of damage is important.

Try adding Cyclone Summoner to your deck. It's an awesome board wipe that leaves only Giants and Wizards as well as lands on the battlefield. Any other cards go back into their owner's hand

Great suggestion! If it was an instant or sorcery to trigger Niv-Mizzet it would been even more appealing. An alternative that will trigger Niv-Mizzet might also be Cyclonic Rift for a similar effect.

solid build. im playing something quite similar. mine leans towards wizard tribal a little more with trinket mage, snapcaster, step through time, magus of the wheel, archeomancer, glen elendra, archmage emeritus and malevolent hermit with 8-9 counterspells. Riptide Laboratory is great in longer games. Also using Shark Typhoon as an extra finisher ;)

I do love me some wizard tribal! Shark Typhoon was another one I looked at for this deck. I enjoy the thought of all those flying sharks :D

Hey don’t know if you’ll see this because the video was posted about 3 months ago but I also have a Niv Mizzet deck. Harmonic Prodigy looks like it would fit really well in your list so far, it is another creature that dilutes the instant/sorcery density but it doubles the triggers of most of the other creatures in your deck. If your trying to make the deck a little more competitive I’d also recommend glint-horn buccaneer, it also goes infinite with curiosity so if you can’t cast niv because of how expensive he can get with commander tax you have another out on a creature. Other than those two, maybe consider tandem lookout, it’s not a may but you can always stop from decking yourself by targeting a creature with the last ping. Overall the deck looks like a lot of fun! Hope you’ve enjoyed playing it

Thanks for the support and suggestions! I love playing my Niv-Mizzet deck. Spell slinging is an archetype I thoroughly enjoy. Harmonic Prodigy was an interesting card. When I played it, it felt very win-more. I didn't feel like it triggered enough of the deck with only 7 permanents and itself, not an instant or sorcery. I have since added Veyran, Voice of Duality which does a similar thing but triggers more of the deck. I'd consider Veyran over Prodigy first if you want this effect. Glint-horn Buccaneer is a awesome card. Works well with Niv-Mizzet. Definitely an easy include. I did play Tandem Lookout but I never liked that Tandem Lookout is not a "may" trigger. I had scenarios where I liked to play curiosity, cycle through my deck, not have enough to kill everyone and then I can flashback echo of eons to do it all over again.

You can try whirlpool warrior, drake, and rider for wheels and refreshing hands since you'll probably stuck on some rounds and need new cards for answers. Or if you want to pump up, you can also wheel twice by sacrificing wpool warrior or pinging wpool drake by 2 for extra damage,. And maybe add irenicus vile duplication (sorcery - legendary doubler) to double niv and recursion damages when wheeling.

I did opt for those wheels effects that were not instants or sorceries but I think they would be great additions. Irenicus Vile Duplication is an awesome card. I've been using it in my Talrand deck. Great suggestion!!

Try intervene instead of stubborn denial, also I like using ragavan and dockside extortionist for ramp

I love the Intervene suggestion! Perfect for protecting Niv. Unfortunately I only have one Extortionist and it's in my Nicol Bolas deck but it is pretty much an auto include in red decks. I haven't tested Ragavan in Commander. How have you found it? I'm not running any way to give it evasion.

@@scocasplays6703 I usually just use the dash cost but it's all about the table you're playing at sometimes I'll hard cast turn 1 and get 2 to 3 treasures while digging and setting rocks.

I would add more utility and multi color lands. That's way too many basic lands that you actually don't need. Also, what is your other win conditions?

Great suggestions! Any recommendations on lands to add? In this Iteration, only the Curiosity combos. I can up that number of course. Any other Izzet win con's you like?

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll give it a try. Spark Double is a great card. I have one in my super friends deck. I'm less keen in this spellslinger deck as I don't want to add anything that isn't an instant or sorcery without good reason. Copying a Niv-Mizzet Parun sounds fun though! Feels a bit win more to me but happy to see how it feels.

@@scocasplays6703 spark double and quaisduplication allow you to have 3+parun's on the field also lucky clover (its banned in standard) is a great artifact to have in a spellslinger deck.
