Reagan was more progressive policy wise than Nixon he literally threatened Israel with sanctions if they didn’t stop bombing Beirut, he appeared in drag in an army propaganda film made during the Second World War titled “this is the army” to help approve morale, he’s also to thank for our reaproachment with the Soviet Union which ended up being a major factor in the fall of the eastern bloc

Say what you want about Nixon, what he said in private conservation was the consensus of most Americans during those times. You'd be far pressed to find many people that accepted homosexual in the 1960's. Especially Nixon's generation. He didn’t even personally dislike gay people. If you listen to the tapes he was just against the glorification and celebration of that lifestyle on public television. He believed that they genuinely couldn’t help their sexual orientation and sympathized with them, but believed that they should keep those struggles private and not flaunt it publicly. He was also classically educated & historically literate, and genuinely believed that history repeatedly testifies that moral decay often precipitates the collapse of great civilizations. Meh. Is not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Antiquated views? Probably... but definitively not monstrous. The little negative views he had about homosexual was just the ignorance of the time, he basically said that he didn't find a woman that swears attractive, he didn't attacked the Jews but rather was worried that personal issues could cloud foreign policy, and he just said that the Chines had a very different strategy than the Russians and thus one should't compare them just because they were both communist. I don't like Nixon, I think he had many flaws but I found non of them in what he said in those tapes.

Why didn't he get rid of the tapes

I think he was more concerned with having a record that said HE was the framer of foreign policy (Not Kissinger) that he was willing to gamble on impeachment to save this history.

Anybody judging Nixon about what he says on these tapes I have one message for you. If only you had recordings of your grandfather. I wonder what he said about women, homosexuals, and Jews. You might want to keep your mouth shut after that.

Okay, the more of Richard Nixon I see, the more I like him. He was a brilliant and pragmatic man, and an incredible president.
