Sarah Katz, a 21-year-old University of Pennsylvania student with a heart condition, died after drinking Panera Bread’s “charged lemonade,” a large cup of which contains more caffeine than cans of Red Bull and Monster energy drinks combined, according to a lawsuit that claims the restaurant chain failed to appropriately warn consumers about its ingredients.

its lemonade drink since when do we add 400grams of caffeine in it, it should have been labeled as energy drink lemonade so if she died from it its indeed the stores fault. if you buy something in the store and you have a peanut allergy however nowhere in the store does it say what your buying has peanuts or anything to do with peanuts and you die who is at fault?

This is unfortunate BUT anyone that has a certain health condition that requires you NOT to drink caffeine knows better than to consume any caffeine at all. Myself included. So while this is sad … if the drink has any sort of caffeine and she can’t have caffeine but it clearly states it on the display why was she drinking it?

Her condition did not require her to not consume caffeine at all, she could tolerate some small amounts, but that amount in the drink is unreasonably high, and deadly for people like her. She probably saw its a caffeinated beverage, but it didn't cross her mind that a cup of LEMONADE would have more caffeine than 3 CUPS OF ACTUAL COFFEE. They made what is essentially an energy drink and didn't market it as such, that's the issue.

@@DIRTYdeeds613Yeah, kids have health conditions because the mother(s) had severe substance abuse, tons of sugars and preservatives throughout the pregnancy. Not the mention all the toxins exposed to a fetus. Then said child eats fake food during development years. These conditions have been medically noted far prior to covid-19. 30% of the male population in millennials have bit the dust regardless of drug use. While babyboomer parents were heavy drinkers, smokers, and pharmaceutical drug abusers. yet, children in these organic hippie towns are not overweight, active, and perfectly fine. You KNOW what the problem is.

This. One of my friends gets panic attacks when she drinks caffeine. So guess what she avoids? Caffeine and anxiety attacks are no fun, but it's not like they will kill you, so someone with a potentially fatal cardiac arrhythmia is incredibly stupid to ingest caffeine. Darwin.

Why do people try to be contrarian so hard? Death by lemonade doesn’t sound natural at all. Forced or not, there has to be something wrong with that thing or its misleading presentation to kill two people so far. I don’t even think the Heart Attack Grill is this successful at claiming lives.

@@E_Hammy I think the one thing that puts a wrench in that argument is the "charged" part of the "charged lemonade". To me, that was immediately obvious that this was not a normal lemonade, but I'm not sure if there was a label saying caffeine was added.

@@YangSunWoo yeah, when something is charged, you might expect there to be caffeine in it, but when 1 cup of lemonade has 3 times the reccomended amount you should drink in a day before it becomes unhealthy, then it should not be sold in restaurants.

The drinks ARE labeled with both caffeine amounts and also sugar/calorie counts. This is a relatively new product from Panera so if she was really worried and conscientious about her health, wouldn't you ask what was in a new product before just consuming it??

I work for Panera. Those lemonades are advertised as "as about much caffeine as our dark roast coffee" and because of that, I drank it almost everyday for free not knowing I was actually drinking the equivalent as two red bull energy drinks.

I am a diabetic (type 2) she was told by doctors dont drink alot of caffeine that should have meant drink EVERYTHING EXCEPT caffeine they make other drinks I like Panera they don't force drinks on you she chose it paid for it and unfortunately she paid for it I know I can't drink sugar I know I have to manage what I eat. @leagueofotter2774 The max daily intake is 400mg, what Panera served was 390. Sounds hella lot like a technicality you're hanging on to. Also, the label on the drink isn't particularly big and its not like a lemonade usually has that amount of caffeine in it. Not her fault for thinking a lemonade, a drink that typically doesn't contain caffeine or, at the very least doesn't contain an unhealthy amount of it, would be enough to kill her.

@@errorreversed6309even though you are right jt is the same amount of caffeine in a coffee... Which is well known to be served in the US in large amounts and many drink over the recommended amount. Plus the recommended amount doesn't mean you go over it and you die it means you shouldn't have that but you can. Similar to sugar, the recommended amount is 25 grams a day but no one follows that, have two slices of cake and that recommended amount is exceeded in half an hour It was honestly plain and simple negligent of her own health and well being to make such a bad decision when her life was on the line

Guy, I'll assume you're young and/or unfamiliar with panera bread, and/or didn't google to compare caffine amounts, because the Charged Lemonade was not advertised as an energy drink, nor did they list the caffine amount on the menu like they were legally required to. One cup of coffee, regular coffee brewed at home has approx 80-100 milligrams of caffine. The Charged Lemonade has approx 155-302 milligrams of caffeine (depending on size of drink ordered). As you can read (hopefully) Panera Bread not properly labling this monster of a beverage an "Energy Drink" absolutely 100% ended with the death of an unsuspecting person with a pre-existing heart condition, all because someone couldn't take two seconds to properly label the drink on the menu.

@@TylireousGaminggirl you're telling them to look it up and Google when you didn't do that yourself :/ actually the same fluid ounces of coffee was labeled as having about 250mg or more of coffee with the charged lemonade having less caffeine. Look it up it's on their website. Make sure you compare fluid ounces for an accurate ratio

I feel terrible for the family of this young woman however, with a drink called "CHARGED" Lemonade and her having a life long, chronic cardiac condition, coupled with her clearly knowing the risks of consuming too much caffeine, she clearly isn't "Ivy League" material.....She just wasn't very bright. Sad but true. Then she orders the industrial size, 55 gallon drum of the stuff. She made a clear assumption that it'd be fine for her to drink instead of thinking to herself "Maybe I should skip it, research it and revisit". She knew she was a risk but said, screw it. I've been a Type 1 diabetic for a long time. I know what and what NOT to eat/drink. If I'm uncertain, I don't have it. If I saw an extra large chocolate cake with double chocolate frosting and it says "Made with natural sugar and real cocoa" so, I guess I can eat it? Yeah, what the hell! No, you ass! DO YOU HAVE A DEATH WISH? OFF LIMITS!!! DO WITHOUT IT! Of course, the parents believe, their "Ivy League" daughter wouldn't do something so absolutely stupid so, it must be Panera's fault... Nope, your daughter was 100% irresponsible. Full stop! Again, my heart goes out to friends and relatives but if I sat down and ate a 5 pound bag of sugar, I wouldn't want anyone to feel bad for me and certainly wouldn't want blame placed on innocent parties. It was my own damn fault.... GEEZ!

The last time I went to Panera was like 5 or 6 months ago maybe and that was the first time I saw these charged lemonades. I remember very clearly that they were labelled as “390mg of caffeine” I saw that and I was like nah I’m good, so I drank a ginger ale instead. I do feel bad for the family but the drinks did say the caffeine content on them

Agreed, unfortunate outcome,but as a college student, we are all more than certain she understood the drink obviously ment some form of energy boost, likely high in caffeine and or sugar. and if she was told to stay away from such drinks prior, then it was to her own choice that was indeed unfortunate but NOT the fault of Panera bread. i feel for the family's grief, but what theyre doing is attempting to cash in, on their daughters untimely death.

I’ve had it, and noticed it was advertised as having as much caffeine as one of their coffees. However it even affected me. I’ve been drinking coffee since I was an adolescent. Never had jitters from coffee. Researched further. This drink has FAR more caffeine than a cup of coffee. It’s like maybe two or three Red Bulls. I don’t blame her. I’m an adult of sound mind, professional and in great shape. This damn drink is mislabeled.

Majority of our nations peoples obesity has absolutely nothing to do with such peoples overeating , but rather having to do to the intensive farming practices that has made our foods virtually toxic. Growth hormones, Steroids, enhanced synthetic sugars fructose, antibiotics,high fats, the very things done to make our foods larger fatter and grow several times faster gets directly passed into our bodies when we consume them. throwing our systems out of wack. and why? so that we can end up in hospitals taking 17 medications and more which they themselves bring even more problems.

You are misunderstanding the situation, the issue isn't that it contained caffeine and she couldn't have caffeine, its that its contains an unreasonable amount, and didn't disclose it, small amounts of caffeine are OK, she wasn't having coffee when she knows she cant take that much, she was having a LEMONADE in which they decided to put nearly 4 TIMES THE AMOUNT OF CAFFEINE AS REGULAR COFFEE. They essentially made a super strong energy drink and didn't market it as such, that's the problem. She probably knew it was caffeinated but assumed its a tolerable amount because its not normal for non coffee to have more caffeine than 3 cups of coffee WTF.
