Interesting to see the conversion at NPS. I've only ever seen it done at LB.

It looks like that train was headed to Raritan on the RVL; it was one of the trains that started from New York Penn and then changed modes at Newark Penn.

@@scotttheniceguy I took those directs 4 times in total thus far. The mode change explains exactly why your wait time at Newark is longer.

Apparently, they’re supposed to start up the Diesel Engine before lowering the Pantograph, or else the trainline would go ‘dead.’ Is that true?

The entire process is automated and initiated by the push of a single button. The first engine spools up and is connected to the trainline, then the pantograph is lowered. The second engine is started up afterwords.

No power when the loco runs out from under the trolley wire plus the pantograph extends to its maximum free height with no load(the wire).
