A coach and former Olympic competitor in the equestrian sport of dressage is standing trial for shooting his student and firing at her fiancé on August 7, 2019. Michael Barisone, 57, has maintained self-defense.
Barisone faces two counts of attempted murder and two counts of second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Authorities said he shot student-tenant Lauren Kanarek in the chest twice, and opened fire at her fiancé Rob Goodwin, but he missed. Barison had been trying to evict Kanarek from his farm in Long Valley, New Jersey, claiming that the couple threatened him. He even sued police, claiming they failed to investigate when he called 911 three times and that they lied in their reports.
To be sure, the dislike between him and his student was mutual. In fact, Kanarek voiced concerns for her safety.
“I’m being bullied by a 6’3” man,” she wrote on Facebook before the shooting in a now unavailable post, according to The New York Times. “Bullied to the point I’m afraid. It’s very complicated- I’m not sure of what I can say here- but it seems as if Safe Sport was created for exactly this reason.”
The SafeSport organization fields allegations of abuse in U.S. Olympic and Paralympic sports.
A judge dismissed Barisone’s lawsuit.
“Courts have held that a plaintiff does not have a constitutional right to have police investigate on their behalf, let alone do so to their satisfaction,” Superior Court Judge Louis Sceusi said, according to the Morris County outlet The Daily Record in November.

A psychologist (who works in the mental health/therapy/healing profession) should never come across as putting on a show, being so dismissive and rigid. The state has hurt their case, in my opinion.

If anything, even though he cut off the chat, to me it seems he cut out just a little bit of his attitude, I repeat, " a little". I'm sure he don't care, but he isn't seen as a respectable judge. I think he knows Laurens father, so he's one sided and not a fair judge. He needs to be removed. As for the States witness, that guy likes to hear himself talk. 🤦🏼‍♀️ He spent all of a little bit more then 13 hours with Michael, and he thinks that's enough time to diagnose someone? I have a step father who acts like him. Out of us 10 children, NONE of us like him for that very reason. My mother is gone, he can't understand why we don't visit him. I hope the jury is smart enough to not buy his testimony.

This is the strangest trial I've ever seen. The judge let's a state witness (expert) get up there and clearly say biased, emotionally charged comments against the defendant. First, I think it makes the witness look unbelievable. Second, it is just more evidence this judge is not playing on even ground here. I don't need to be lectured by KZfaq law scholars here. I know the judge has to maintain things within certain boundaries. How can a judge let one witness come in and get emotional about the defendant and not say a word while a defense expert has to be very careful about what he says. If Barisone is convicted I think he has good grounds for an appeal.

Michael was represented by counsel and therefore, if there is something wrong with the judges behavior, counsel needs to object and make it on the record or he waves the right to do so later.

@@chriscoop6852 of course he does. He is a DEFENSE attorney. If the defense receives a not guilty verdict, they have no fear of a mistrial or an appeal. They would certainly welcome an appeal on a guilty verdict. The prosecution always has to consider a not guilty verdict, as well as a mistrial, or an appeal, as well. If the prosecution gets away with hearsay, a conviction could be overturned, but if the defense gets away with it, what are the consequences? It only benefits the defense.

Update on Michael Barisone, the judge ignored three doctors who claim Michael is of no harm to himself or anyone else sent him to Greystone and said he had to wait another six months for another hearing

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't the other experts assess Barisone directly or shortly after the incident and Dr. Hassonm, made his assessment 2 years after the incident. How could he make a judgement on the amnesia that occurred directly after the incident? Did Hassonm take into consideration that 2 years after the threat was removed Barisone's reactions and testing would be more normal? The conclusions the other doctor's indicated seemed to be his response to all the stress he was under at the time related to a delusional breakdown which is usually temporary. My late mother would have a term for Dr. Charles Hassonm, "Pompous A**".

Yes I agree with that, the diagnosis could be very different two years down the road. Barisone may have indeed been delusional in a different time frame closer to the incident for example. As Dr Simring very clearly stated psychosis can manifest during extreme anxiety, this is a man who has already been dignosed with depression......It's clear to me this could be very different two years later, he may even be on meds...whose asking?

He’s the state’s expert rebuttal witness. The prosecution is allowed to call an expert during the defense’s case to rebut the defense’s expert.

This is so bizarre. The prosecuter is great. The judge is biased. The defense attorney is terrible. The witness today is a professional expert for trial purpose but can't figure out basic rules of court or procedure. Its crazy and beyond salvageable. He's probably guilty but u can't get a guilty verdict like this in a sham trial that is just an embarrassing look for nj

Dr Schlesinger is credible. I agree with his diagnosis 100% . I appreciate the Judge's professionalism. I think the defenses attempts to have Michael look as disheveled as possible is not a good strategy. His hair gets wilder every day. If Bilinkis won't arrange for a haircut and shave for MB, he can certainly get him a comb. When Dr. S. met with MB or testing etc. he testified that Michael didn't have this disheveled appearance. Comes across strongly as melingering

Wjhen a person is depressed, they often dont take care of their appearance---depression is a mental illness...saying his hair is dishelved is like making fun of a cancer patient who is bald. Society has not accepted mental illness as real, like they accept physical illness.

Fantastic rebuttal expert witness. I strenuously believe that Maligering exists. Its the only defence he has. Barisone acted with dolus directus and he knew what he was doing it wrong. He wanted the power over his student and client, thats all.

Even though I’ve been riding since the earth was new, I’d never witnessed the real ruthlessness of trainers who make you feel & even tell you “you will be nothing without me!” That’s what Barisone did to me and when I finally put my foot down, he tried to kill us. The less educated/knowledgeable folk could only see this case as “confusing.” The one’s “in the know,” saw it as simply as we. Sometimes, it’s not what is said at trial that’s important. It’s all that is not said. And, not who did testify- but who did not & why. I do take comfort in the fact he was at least found NGRI instead of straight NG on the charges regarding me. This at least removes him from society & harming others for a time. Disappointed the jury didn’t find shooting at someone’s head (despite missing it) then running towards them to finish the job (but being subdued instead) didn’t qualify as an attempt on taking a life for Rob’s charges against him. I understand it’s hard since one bullet casing wasn’t ever found - but- if the jury were really listening, they’d have found the fact this occurred on a day in August (in NJ) where a literal hail storm was in the forecast, to be a bit more insidious than it was made out to be. Had I been a juror, and Bilinkas kept referencing the audios, I’d wonder why he refused to play one. Except, I know exactly what it is on them & if the jury did too, Barisone would never get out of prison. Dr. Schlesinger here had Barisone down to a “T!” Too bad the jury didn’t give more weight to his words. :(

@@joeyagirl By the way, barisone’s thuggish and petulant expert goes by the name of HASSON, not Hanson. Moreover, Dr Schlesinger is a psychologist and not a psychiatrist. Only a psychiatrist can prescribe medications. I’ve never seen a psychiatrist. But then again I’m NOT LAUREN. 😀

An outstanding rebuttal witness who failed the Defence Attorney's manipulative and prevaricative attempts to have him change the victims's description of the shooting and therefore failed to create reasonable doubt. And again, the Judge has to reprimand Bilinkass over and over about breaching the same rules of law. Bilinkiass is the single most disrespectful attorney I have had tue displeasure of hearing. Barisone is guilty. Barisone chose to act in dolus directus. Barisone failed to entertain alternatives to shooting the victim. Barisone has to own his choices and take accountablity for them. Barisoneis a malingerer.
