The President Barry II CB Radio which we reviewed and modified in an earlier episode is now revisited. We show you how to gain access to the factory service menu, show you what each option does, what the default values are and what adjustments can be made.
The Barry II is one of the newer style radios from President which have no adjustment pots inside the radio. Everything is now done via the menu system, if you can figure out how to gain access. This video shows you what you need to know to enter the hidden service menu and what the different menu option mean and do.
You can purchase this radio from various suppliers in the UK, link to Knights Electrocom below:

Hi John, thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback which is appreciated. Yes this is a great first radio, you cant really go wrong with any of the current President line up. I personally use a Diamond HF10FX antenna (see my video on that) which is easy to tune and works brilliantly for me on 10 meter (HAM Band) or 11 meter (CB band). "Height is Might" with CB Radio and HF frequencies so the bigger the better but it depends on your vehicle. Your not going to get away with a 2 meter antenna on a Smart Car :-). The Diamond is expensive and there are much cheaper options available. Thunderpole are good (the Orbitor HD is good value, Orbitor SS stainless steel is good also), K40 or Wilson are excellent. Maybe a Wilson "Little Wil" would do nicely and reasonably priced or the Wilson 1000 if thats within your price range. All the best

Hi Buzzie, it depends on budget really and location of use (portable or fixed). You could manage with a solar generator like Jackery, Anker, etc. Most have a DC output built in so simple to connect to a radio and very portable. Best to have multiple options for flexibility and redundancy. The problem with large hard-wired panels and a multi-Li-ion battery setup is they are an advert to the people who didn’t prepare. A small portable solar generator, radio and antenna would provide a good amount of flexibility to cater for most situations. All the best and thanks for watching

Good morning sir. I travel a road that has no telephone service for a few miles. With my health conditions it really worries me. I have to rely on CB to communicate. Is President your favorite radio and which one, if someone were to want more power, can you get the most power out of. Love your videos. You put everything in layman’s terms. Thanks
@NLKMediaGroup
@NLKMediaGroup 9 ай бұрын
Hi Rob, thank you for your kind words. Its not just about power, the antenna and tuning it well for low SWR will also make a big difference. My favorite radio is the President Richard which can push 50W but is a HAM radio out the box and needs expanding to cover CB frequencies. The President Walker 2 is essentually the same radio as the Richard but is CB out the box. They share the same circuit board but when expanded the Richard does have a little more power. So, if your wanting CB then the Walker 2 is a lovely unit, powerful when expanded and easy to use. Watch my Richard and Walker 2 videos for all the info on them. If you want Single Side Band in your radio then hold fire as the new President George 2 is due any day now. Everyone waiting for stock to arrive and very much looking forward to testing that unit as it has much promise. The Richard and Walker have an RF Gain dial on the front so you can expand the radio and dial the power back to your legal limit under normal use and the option is then there in an emergency to increase. I did a couple of videos on Antenna Tuning and also the Diamond HF10-FX which is a 10 meter band antenna but when extended to its max length works really well for me on CB 11 Meter Frequencies. CRT and Alinco make nice radios and the Midland M20 is nice but I do like my President radios. If your UK or EU based then all the President radios you see on my channel have expandability but if your in the US then they are different and have mostly had the expandability removed. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.

I was able to use the same steps to enter the hidden menu in a president Thomas FCC radio. Most of the stuff is the same. It does allow for some nice adjustment. I had wished that they would have had a AM modulation adjustment. I am getting about 65% average modulation at normal speaking voice and the higher sounds get 85% and if I say audio it will go over 100%. If I am correct on am if you don't have good modulation it doesn't matter if it has a bunch of power? Even when the power is turned way down the modulation stays the same. I think some radios if you turned up the power they couldn't do the modulation. I have been away from radio to long. Now that I have seen the hiden menu and saw what the stuff does my only issue with the Thomas is that you can't dim the display. It is loaded with so many features that I can't believe it doesn't have that. I do enjoy your videos. I can't wait to see you work your way through the rest of the president radios and then the next brand. I believe you said that you don't see much from cobra radio in the Europe, well they seem to have narrowed the stuff in the US also and in my opinion they seem to have an above average amount of issues with the CB radios. Cheers and thanks for the informative videos.

Hi Robert, thanks for confirming the FCC variant also allows for access to the factory services menu. AM modulates the amplitude (signal strength) vs the base carrier in order to transmit the voice signal. So, the input voice signal is combined with the carrier signal and requires more power when it is greater (shouting) or less power when it is smaller (whispering) but will always be 4W or more in this example as that is the strength of the base carrier being output. If your carrier signal is 4W you can see up to 12W being output if you're screaming down the microphone or around 8W if talking normally (just an example). FM on the other hand is a continuous signal and it is the frequency that is modulated. A 4W FM transmission will always be 4W regardless of the input voice signal. Thanks for the feedback on the videos and I am pleased you're enjoying them. They really do take time to research and put together but it's fun doing them. Unfortunately, time is my enemy at the moment so I have not been able to get the next video completed yet. I have the Lincoln 2+ and Harrison 2 left to review and then that's the entire President line up done. I have heard from a few US viewers about less than ideal Cobra quality control but cannot confirm this as we just can't get them here. Thanks for watching. All the very best

Hi, thank you for watching. The band blocks relate to 40 channel blocks with different frequencies. The A band block is the standard CEPT frequencies from 26.965 to 27.405 and is usually referred to as Normal. Band block B is usually referred to as Superior and starts after Band block A at 27.415 to 27.855 and Band block C is usually referred to as Inferior and is before Band Block A starting at 26.515 to 26.955. So, when in numeric order it goes Band block C, then A, then B covering 26.515 to 27.855 in increments of 10KHz. If you have a President radio this is the case when in TS mode which is normal mode. If in T0 mode then take off 5KHz. (T0 means -5 KHz). It can be confusing at first and some radios have other blocks D, E, F etc which are just more bands in blocks of 40. I hope this helps and that the translator has done well converting this over. All the best and thanks for watching.

@coolerkerl Жыл бұрын
@@NLKMediaGroup Hi. Yes! The translator worked well. Thank you for the detailed explanation, which I did not expect. That is not a matter of course. With your explanation and my own research, I think I got it. The A-B-C radio bands irritated me. I think they correspond to the allowed German channels 1-80. These are radio bands A and C. Channels 5-40 are listed as "Export" which is believed to be radio band B. In any case, I will have to delve deeper into the matter. I would like to thank you in advance for the help you have provided and I would be very happy to see more videos. So I say a "73", which means greetings here. Joerg

@@coolerkerl Thank you for your reply. If you check my website, I have a service sheet for the President Harry 3 (different radio I know) you can download which has the standard frequencies in it for each mode on a President radio. nlkmediagroup.com/presidentharry3cbr/ It's at the bottom of the page and is a link to the PDF which might be helpful on Page 5. I will compose a full listing of the band blocks at some point and make that available. Time has been my issue recently, but I have a few weeks off soon and intend to be pushing some videos up. I have 10 CB radios on the shelf ready for review (President, CRT, Alinco and Midland) and am desperately trying to get to them. I might do some shorter unboxing videos on them and then follow up with more in-depth reviews afterwards. I have so many plans for videos but with a large family and increased work pressures I am struggling to get to them. Things should settle down soon so will be back uploading again. 73's to you, all the best. MJ7NLK

@@NLKMediaGroup Thank you for the effort! And for the tip about the website, which I didn't know about yet. I already knew the list on page 5 in a similar form! I just couldn't match the radio channels to the band blocks. If you intend to make a list of tape blocks, don't make it just for me. This is also a task for me. I can't always let other people do the work. I am very happy about your invested time and the videos to come. Always remember that your free time must also benefit your family. With this in mind, good luck for the coming weeks. Greetings from Jörg

I would like to know if it is possible to increase the performance of the Berry II cb radio with an RM KL203P type amplifier? What is your opinion? Regards: m.perczel
@NLKMediaGroup
@NLKMediaGroup Жыл бұрын
Yes an RF amplifier will boost the signal on any CB radio. The KL203P would do the job. However, the use of burners (amplifiers) that exceeds the legal limit are illegal to use. So, it depends on the law in your region. Just be careful to not over run the amp. Best to keep the power coming out of the radio down and let the amp do its job. Overpowering the input can damage it. All the best and thanks for watching

Hi do you know if on the signal meter if each bar is 2 pounds as it only goes up to 4 bar on key
@NLKMediaGroup
@NLKMediaGroup Жыл бұрын
Hi, I do not know the answer to that one. I use an external power meter for measuring the output as the four bars don't really tell you much. It could be a 4W scale or a percentage of total power. It would have to be tested to find out for sure. It is unlikely to be anything overly accurate as the radio would need to factor in CW and PEP in order to provide anything meaninful and as there is no scale or measurement type indicator it wouldn't be of much use. Good question and not one I have been asked before. All the best and thanks for watching

@NLKMediaGroup 6 ай бұрын
You could try to adjust your FM deviation. If you have increased your standard power output then the FM deviation may need tweaking. In the factory services menu, try adjusting the F2 setting both up and down with some trial and error and see if your friends report it getting louder. The desired value is 1.9KHz but you will need test equipment to do that so trial and error is your only option. Write down the existing setting before making changes. My standard setting was FF. Hope this helps. Happy new year and all the best for 2024.

Hi Simon, some of the radios have much more room for expandability than others. I guess its down to the components used. Some can only expand to 120 channel mode and other all the way. Down to the design and the size of the heat sink fitted as to the heat it could dissipate. All the best
