My dad's fishfinder unit (he builds boats) developed a display fault, so I tore it apart and got it working.
As usual, I explain how it works around the fault, make some measurements and then the repair.

Very cool save! I thought for sure based on the shape that tube would be hard to find. I used to have a job relamping IBM POS 12 inch touch screens.. Patience is key. Love your work... keep fixing stuff. SMJ 23

You must have very steady hands holding probes in tight pitch chips and not shorting, I am 78 now so have slight tremor, my probes are insulated right down to the points and I keep them very sharp to prevent slippage! Very interesting videos, well done! Fraser Armstrong

Thanks for the comments. I am 58 and hoping my steady hands stay with me a few years yet. I haven't noticed any deterioration since I started as a kid. Fingers crossed!

The display upgrade was probably a higher output CCFL for use in sunlight or something.

I have a humminbird 999 with a bad backlight. Mine is the LED version and I found an inductor coil that was bad. It was black and just crumbled to pieces. No way to know the specific one I need so I bought a bunch of them and going to try til it works.

I use a powerful flashlight to check weather a LCD screen works and the backlight is faulty.

Testing as he did proved out the backlight drive circuit. Not proving out your faulty parts is the same as the mechanic who replaces the battery, alternator AND starter before they get a dead vehicle running.

In regards of the declining fish population I would have taken a wire on 100V and crossed all the IC's pins with it.

Very interesting repair as usual. Now, just because you mentioned it in a card in the video : Davinci Resolve 18.1 now has a voice isolation effects that works great to remove any kind of background noise, so you could give that a go to deal with your HP gear noisy fan 😁 (Even though TBH if you hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't have paid much attention)

Oh great, I’ll take a look at that voice isolation. I have been playing quite a bit with Resolve past few videos, i.e. tracking etc. Great fun!

Update: Just tried the voice isolation, wow, works pretty good! I'll definitely be using it from now on. Previously I was adjusting the EQ manually with all sorts of notch filters etc in Resolve.

I've got a GPS fish finder, but the best part with mine is the ones it finds all come with chips. i've found over the years is that the tubes seem to give up the ghost before the electronics. Got a few one a shelf from a laptops, but got no idea what to do with them. Was thinking what would happed if i heated one up and tried to bend it?

@@IanScottJohnston I've got all the equipment to bend and anneal it afterwards; I think I’ve had too many hobbies. But it would be an excuse to turn the kiln on and fire up the hot head torch. Maybe there is a failed video to be made there. 🙂

How did you identify which CCFL tube to order? The numbers on the Hitachi label? I have the same problem on my Humminbird fishfinder. Thank you, great video!!

There's only one company that I could find selling them......and I believe only a few standard sizes to choose from.

so did you replace the digitizer too or just or just the light tube..you kinds skipped over the most important parts. I noticed it was a Hitachi screen? I wonde rif you coul dorder these from ali express to fix debonded digitizers? Would you happen to know?

Used the same, I only replaced the tube.
