Dr. Bowker is one of the top researchers in the world on hoof form and function. He has changed the way we will view the hoof forever and bought hoof care into the 21st century.
His research interests in horses began in the early '90s when he began focusing upon understanding how nerves aid and improve foot function, how horses use the many sensations present in the foot to negotiate within its environment and how the foot dissipates energy and supports the horse during health and disease conditions. He has presented his results to numerous international and national audiences over the past ten plus years and believes that a healthy foot translates to a healthy horse.
Dr. Bowker presently continues his studies in understanding hoof function and how we can better improve the health and condition of the foot during such disease conditions as laminitis and navicular syndrome. Combining his research with his duties as Professor of Anatomy, Bob also consults online and in-person with horse owners, hoof practitioners and vets from around the globe.

Hello, I wanted to mention something I noticed since bringing the toes back on the few horses I trim. I only trim my personal horses plus one I lease. I’ve noticed since bringing the toe back that the bars are growing out straight, compared to before they seemed to flatten out and I would need to trim them so they didn’t get thrush underneath. I have been trimming since 2015 and though I’ve not encountered any significant issues I still was questioning things and even with farrier and trimmer guidance I still felt something was amiss. The horses have definitely been sounder on rocks as well and my thoroughbred that was often difficult to do has become very calm and willing to stand still for the duration of his trim. Thank you for this invaluable information. You have saved my horses from uncomfortable feet.

I’ve watched all the webinars that you’ve done with Dr.bowker and you have no idea how much you and he have helped me. I’ve been looking for something like this. I read Pete Ramey’s book and the chapters that dr.bowker wrote but to hear him explain this stuff makes a world of difference!! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this

I am so glad the webinars are helpful. You and all the other horse owners that are able to make a difference for your horse are why I do them. :)

I am trying to help my 13yr AQHA mare xrayed a year ago with level PA (dorsal angle 52°), diagnosed early navicular, given Osphos shot, shod with wedge pad. I know she has had long toe, crushed heel for years and has been trimmed and shod and wedged and padded many times and she still has long toe, crushed heel, and slight lameness so I am taking over. I believe her caudal foot must be rehabbed and I need pointers on trim, exercise, diet, and anything else except "take the heels back to the widest part of the frog"... been there, done that, and she goes lame.

Have you watched the Webinars with Wendy with Daisy Bicking, Ida Hammer, Ann Ramsey and Alicia Harlov? They may help you.

@@surefootequine thank you so much for your reply. I've watched and read so much I can't remember them all. I'll have to look up all those names... are they on this channel? I have read a bit of Ramey and Ovnicek where they say to shorten the heels slowly as the caudal foot reshapes Bowker says to trim the toes back twice a week, into the white line and bevel 10-2, then gradually move the heels back as the hoof reshapes. At least it makes sense why my mare has been lamed by taking the heels down first! At any rate, I appreciate your encouraging tips.

When you refer to the white line, are you referring to the water line or the true white line ( which is really a little yellowish)

How do you find a farrier that follows Dr. Bowker's advice?

I would ask a farrier or trimmer if they have heard of Bob (most have) and what they think of his ideas.

Look at Linda Harris work and TACT. Depending on the stage in hoof correction we trim to (and sometimes through) the white line. There is a lot more to this but if you are looking for a method I would highly recommend this.

@@denisewebb but...with TACT Linda believes the frog should be removed, and recurve the central sulcus. That is not what Dr. Bowker believes. I believe one is better served by following ABC hoof, Cheryl Henderson method

So the doc tells you stuff that relates to metal shoes being the problem but he want say it!

Metal shoes definitely don’t help things, but my horse was never in shoes and he still ended up with caudal failure/navicular syndrome. I’m finally taking over his trimming because I can’t seem to find a farrier/trimmer who won’t keep trimming to the distortions instead of working on correcting them.
