NO ALONSO? GET AMORIM! Liverpool manager target assessed
With Xabi Alonso confirming that he won't be leaving Bayer Leverkusen this summer, Liverpool now know they must consider other candidates to replace Jurgen Klopp at the helm.
And so Reds reporter David Lynch has taken a closer look at another of the leading candidates: Sporting's Ruben Amorim.
Find out more about the 39-year-old's meteoric rise from coaching in the Portuguese third tier to winning a title against the odds with this deeper look at his career so far.
There is also an examination of the underlying numbers, which show a coach with major differences to Alonso, but some similarities to Klopp.
Make sure to let us know in the comments who your preferred candidate for the Liverpool job is now Alonso is out of the running.

He’s been my preferred option from the very beginning, ticks every single box that I think any Liverpool manager needs to tick, especially his track record at developing youngsters, because the group we’ve got at the minute could play a real part in the future of the club and Amorim will give them the opportunity to achieve that

Gutted Alonso isn’t coming. I hope it’s Amorim. The others names don’t excite me at all and considering he rebuilds his squad so well after important players leave each season speaks volumes. The European record doesn’t concern me too much. Like you said to even compete with some of these teams is hard given the huge difference in financial power. Great vid David 👏🏻👏🏻

Putting Alonso into the Liverpool job so early in his career would be the same thing as asking a newborn baby to fly a 747. - Forget how popular he is was a player at Liverpool, and focus on the fact that he is way too inexperienced for that job right now. - Maybe in 3-6 years he might really be the man for the job. - Once he has won a few cups and titles with either/both Leverkusen or Bayern, then his name should be in the hat for the job.

Amorim is a young up and coming coach, same with Xabi. The job any manager is walking into is huge, it's not just replacing someone who is loved by all Liverpool fans, who ended the long wait for the EPL title, who understands and loves the city, but someone who is Liverpool! Xabi has to be respected, he's going to win the league, he wants to stay loyal, and go again! If he can do it again, and have a run in the UCL he'll be create even more interest. As for Amorim, like Xabi, his career is young, the league isn't as good as the German league, but he's don't amazing well, challenged and beat the best in Portugal, and if Edwards and the board select him, I'll back him 100%

Gutted. But can 100% understand it from his position - he's a young coach, still developing, and for his development at the present time, Leverkusen is the ideal environment for him. Going to clubs like Bayern or Liverpool would be big pressure at this early stage of his managerial career.

Respect to Alonso for being up-front and not leaving everyone hanging on the thought (both for HIS people and OURS). Ruben Amorim is (and has been) growing on me as a really good fit. He's a great tactician, man-manager AND crowd-pleaser. Let's hope he's up for it because I personally can't sense a better fit. Of course, he's also YOUNG!! I don't really hold with all the 'he's not been doing it long enough' stuff that people seem to keep spouting. Who knows, therein may be a diamond!!

Amorin could be tough to get - apparently this is what he said a couple of days ago: ""Liverpool? Right now I’m just focused on Sporting," he told reporters on Friday night. "I am very proud to be Sporting’s manager. I have a contract, and even more importantly than that, I’m very happy here. My focus is on beating Benfica."

I've looked into it quite a bit over the last few months and actually Amorim is much more suited to us and what we need. Alonso was wanted for his connection to the club and what's he currently doing but one good season, no matter how good it is, is still only one season. Amorim has 5 years experience winning multiple trophies. Also he isn't very good with youth and making players better. I'll be happy with Amorim for sure

Hi David, your take on his European performance is interesting. Exactly why its that way really needs disecting. I do believe that Xabi is more Pep like and the LFC fan and city culture leans more to a heavy metal style which Amorim seems best fit for. I like him though. While Xabi was first choice for on the pitch, Amorim was my first choice off the pitch with a second place behind Xabi on it.

In a way I'm gutted about Xabi but it probably works out best for Liverpool in the long term. Say we give Ruben Amorim a season or two and if he exceeds expectation then great but if not hopefully Xabi will of gained the experiences he's needed and not moved on to another club where he has settled.

Okay, I’ve not watched the full video yet, and you asked for us to say who we’re wanting before you make the case for Amorim. Well, I’m totally sold on Amorim already. Portuguese, football is so intriguing, and has great quality, and Amorim has succeeded with his pragmatic, exciting and charismatic approach to his coaching career there. And importantly, he’s also a great man manager, which I think is very important once Klopp has gone, leaving many players, especially the younger ones in need of a lot of love. These are my reasons to appoint Amorim, now I’ll listen to yours!

Just to clarify, his 32 unbeaten run was only stopped because we were crowned champions after 19years, spent the week drinking and celebrating, and then lost a very close game against Benfica at their turf, again, after just winning the league the past weekend, so it kinda "doesnt count". Not only were we hangover but we played literally the hardest match that year in that exact week, and we still put on a fight, even not taking the game very seriously imo...

Completely forgot about Inacio as well. We were linked so heavily with him last year. Would be very Edwards to use it to our advantage. My worry is Hughes and Edwards like De Zerbi. For some reason he just doesn’t seem like a Liverpool manager. Don’t know what it is. Maybe he’s too much like Guardiola. Or it’s the gel and haircut. Let’s not forget Amorim was a player only a few years ago and that might give him an advantage with the current playing squad. Luckily our squad is so good it just needs someone to progress them in a different way.

Thanks David! I actually asked Pep about this at the pre Carabao Cup final press conference and he was quite evasive about it. @@dmlynchlfc Thank-you very much for replying David. I regard you as a very reliable and articulate source on all matters LFC. I have supported Liverpool since I was a boy in the Shankley era. I remember the absolute consternation when it was known Shanks had resigned. How could we ever find another like him. We turned to a member of the bootroom, Bob Paisley, a quiet unassuming man, with no managerial experience. The rest is history as they say. My point is that you don't always need to have managed at the highest level, you just need to be given an opportunity and have the inate qualities required to succeed. After all, he's learnt under the tutelage of Klopp and Klopp has learnt alot from him. I wonder if Klopp will endorse him? The last thing we want to see happen is a situation develop in the way it has at Man United with a revolving door of managers' and the club losing it's identity. Let's hope not. Thanks once again for replying.

Agree with you David as much as I love Xavi it's too soon in his managerial Career and I reckon he will come at some point in the future future, Liverpool's a massive club I think there would have been far too much expectation and I'd be sorry if he had come and not lived up to expectations of the fans,I do reckon he'll lead us to trophy's with more experience it would be a pity to spoil his chance the Portuguese guy seems to be the best choice and Klopp loved the Portuguese game so the mighty Reds will march on with the legacy and depth of squad since FSG invested in the AXA ACADEMY where the youngens mix with their football heroes to feel part of the LFC family and learn to play the Liverpool way #YNWA

The reason Sporting have such good defensive numbers but have conceded so many is because the goalkeeper is so poor. Adan was a good keeper but he's had a difficult season and is now injured. Israel the second keeper is a Uruguay international but is quite inexperienced. You also have to remember he loses two or three big players every season. Obviously as a Sporting fan, I hope he stays. I'd even be happy if the media would leave him alone for a few weeks. Two huge matches, both against Benfica this week,cup semi second leg, and huge league match next weekend.

Good stuff on Amorim. Two things I like about him is that he's had a bad season and has bounced back. That's not easy to do at a club like sporting/any club really. Also really like the bit on developing young players. Huge for the group we have now and one of my least favorite things about arteta and Guardiola. Also, this will sound dumb but I like a manager that is liable to go wild on the sidelines. Xabi is too controlled and measured for me. I think Amorim has gone after the porto manager a couple times! Again, this last point is just preference and winning trumps all so if he wants to be a monk on the sideline and wins the quad then I don't care.

As you say, Portuguese Primera is not in the top 5 leagues in Europe. Losing your star players each season won't help, and I'd argue those are fair variables to factor into his European performances. He wouldn't have that issue at Liverpool. So is it cup competitions? The won 3 domestic cups in recent years, Taca de Portugal '19, Taca da Liga '21-22 and Supertaca Candido de Oliveira '21. Amorim in charge for possibly 2 of those?

Would be interesting how he works with Nunez with his Portuguese league background. I think as long as he shows passion and has a bit of bite then that’s all we ask for isn’t it. No one is going to be Klopp but if he can connect with the fans he could do really well. Also- could we get Palhinha on the cheap-ish with their connection? Would be a great squad player for a few years. Also- think about how we have used the Portuguese league for coaches and players over the past couple of years. Clearly a decent league. Maybe I’m just trying to sell it to myself after losing out on Alonso but let’s be honest he’s got his sights set on Madrid. He’ll stay another year at Bayer L and then take the Madrid job if he’s still doing well.

If Amorim is so successful at Sporting why would he want to leave ?
@aotea6983
@aotea6983 2 ай бұрын
Excellent point, I can't think of any example in any walk of life where someone has been successful and decides to move to a bigger challenge. Certainly no footballer or football manager has ever moved to a bigger league or club once they have experienced some success. Not one

It’s a smaller league and club, wouldn’t you as a manager want to improve your level at a huge club in a top league. Would a manager in division 3 who’s top of the league turn down a premier league club because they are comfortable and doing well in div3 ? I think they would choose the prem league 👍

The same reason why Mourinho, Ferguson, and Wenger left the Portugese, Scottish, and Japanese league. The EPL is a top league that presents a bigger challenge for talented and ambitious managers.

David, the Portuguese league is so inferior from the Prem don’t forget. If we do get Amorim there’s no doubt it’ll be a risk. Also, Hughes and his Bournemouth Backroom staff this is another Risk. It’s a Massive Level from Bournemouth to the greatest Football Club in British History!!! TBH nobody can step into the shoes Klopp will leave behind no matter who it is… Having said that, We have to give this Amorim fella a chance, if we get him that is… Thanks David excellent analytical stream mate!!! Agree with you mate, but i'd take Amorim and give him time, Edwards with the new backstaff team too, exciting time ahead for us. Edwards and the backstaff team gonna takeover the recruitment strategic plan with full support from FSG this time.

There's an argument to be made that the league Xabi is plying his trade in now is also inferior to the Prem... although not so much. So it would still be a risk whatever manager

The inferior league argument is trotted out every season? Mourinho came from Portugal. Suarez came from Eredivisie. Klopp came from Bundesliga. LFC missed out on VVD because he was playing in Scotland. Ended up paying big money. Kevin Keegan was rejected by an inferior league club told he was too small...became best European player. So inferior?

Great vid. 100% Agree. It's quite obviously Amorim. No one else is a more complete option currently. Devastated Klopp's leaving but really excited about the prospect of Amorim replacing him. Plus if it doesn't work out, we can look at Alonso again next season. Win-win for me.

Thanks for the video. I wanted Amorim before Alonso actually. More natural tactical fit and playing style (long vertical passes compared to short, horizontal passes), won trophies in a major league, and we can tap the Portugese market for even more players. Also, if it doesn't work out, Alonso can come later. I understand why Alonso didn't want to come - tough to follow Klopp. Look at what happened to Moyes at United...

I would be happy with either Amorim or De Zerbi, believe they fit Liverpool and showed their qualities, highly regarded by coaches and players alike, the way they play is what you would love to see at Liverpool, good personalities, they might be better fits than Alonso honestly

@@dmlynchlfc yeah they have but this season specifically the good defensive stats in my opinion is because of the keepers saving us time and time again ,also poor poor finishing by other teams after cutting us open that's the Liverpool system not individuals. We like to go 1-0 behind a lot this season I'm watching using what I see with my own eyes and see the chances we give up and somehow get away with .18/19.. 19/20 we were brilliant defensively under klopp. I wonder how many times Brighton are going to cut us open tomorrow and we either save them or they miss ultimately we will still win the game probably 3-1. Statistics looking great

While Amorim looks impressive, I'd prefer a manager with experience of the prem or another top league and/or a decent record in Europe. So I'd opt for Franks or De Zerbi. Both speak well and have that eccentric side.

Why are Amorim OR De Zerbi rated lower than Alonso(?) - In sensible/real-life/real-world terms, Alonso is a literal infant in his managerial career. - It’s a complete joke for someone with his level of inexperience to be mentioned around the soon-to-be vacant job at Liverpool. - The know-it-all pundits and journalists are fucking idiots talking up this kind of rubbish.
@dmlynchlfc
@dmlynchlfc 2 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say it's a joke at all. The reason De Zerbi is rated below Alonso is because he hasn't won anything. Alonso is in his first full season at Leverkusen and is about to win their FIRST EVER Bundesliga title. That's an insane overachievement. Amorim, fair enough, maybe he should be level pegging, but it's a weaker league and he doesn't have the Europe factor, either, where Alonso seems to have started very well.
