In December 1943, experienced German fighter pilots were a rarity. Notice in the video with Charlie and Franz, Charlie said "It could have" been a death sentence if some one had reported him. I highly doubt Franz would have been executed, Franz was an exceptionally experienced pilot and they were vital to developing the younger replacement pilots. The Luftwaffe pilots were mostly honorable men. I learned all of this reading "A Higher Call" which is the book written about Charlie Brown and Ludwig Franz Stigler.

Just letting the bomber go would've been a death sentence for the crew. They would've been easy targets for the guns on the ground. Franz had to escort them past the guns. The complete story is told in the book A Higher Call by Adam Makos. You can also follow the music videos with their Sabaton history episode video.

Well that was pretty interesting for a music video! One of my primary interests is the battle of Arnhem and Operation Market Garden, controversially dramatised in the film A Bridge Too Far (1977) and better referenced in episodes 4 and 5 of the Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg mini-series Band Of Brothers (2001). I was actually doing a bit of research on Fliegerhorst (airbase) Deelen just before your video release, and this was the largest German airbase in Holland just north of Arnhem and had a big impact on Market Garden. It also hosted a huge nightfighter control bunker that was so indestructable that the Dutch government still use it today to store their archive records, even after the Germans had destroyed the inside of the control room in 1944 with a 500Kg aerial bomb when they evacuated the bunker. I would caution against making generalisations about people being shot for not doing their duty - the Luftwaffe, particularly the fighter pilots - regarded themselves as 'knights of the air' and chivalry was still a thing even in the mid-20th Century. The essential idea was to shoot the aircraft out from under the pilot, and if the enemy managed to bale out, that was okay. So this story makes a lot of sense to me. It is true that deserters in the army were sometimes shot, and some of the conscripted troops from Eastern Europe formed into 'Ost' battalions and stationed on the coast in Normandy to oppose the D-Day landings were shot by their officers if they tried to desert. There's also a scene in The Bridge At Remagen (1969) in which the bridge kommandant (played by Robert Vaughn) witnessed the SS executing deserters on his way to Remagen, and then he himself was executed by the SS at the end of the film for allowing the Americans to capture the bridge intact. A good study of the dynamics of air warfare in this period is the British made film Battle Of Britain (1969), directed by one of the regular James Bond directors in the 1960s, Guy Hamilton, where the German pilots are correctly portrayed as having this 'knights of the air' ethos in their conduct of the battle. This is one of the best films about the war in terms of historical accuracy. For American history fans, you may be pleased to know that after Band Of Brothers (2001) and The Pacific (2010) mini series, Hanks and Spielberg are currently producing a new series called Masters Of The Air, about the USAAF 8th Air Force bomber campaign over Europe, and this is due for release on Apple TV any time now. What a fantastic way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Thank you very much!

Till this day Franz Stigler had shot down 29 enemy till this moment. For 30 he would got the iron cross/Knight cross, the highest metal for german souldiers i ww2. A commander of stigler, in africa, said, 'when i hear about, that one of u have shoot a parachute, i will shoot himself...' For Stigler the B-17 was like a parachute. And when he saw the crew he can't shoot...

The "code of the air" did have even more meaning in WW1, when honour still was a real thing. One of the rules was to never shoot someone, who was out of ammo. I think this code was writen by Manfred von Richthofen better known as "the red baron" (another song/story you should check out).

For what it's worth, here is my verdict having gone out and purchased 2 Sabaton CDs. Heroes - for the track of this thread, and War To End All Wars - for Christmas Truce and Lady Of The Dark. Two superb cds with great lyrics and excellent guitar work. Not sure which is the better of the two - and all I can say is I want more. I had dismissed Sabaton thinking it was high on growling - but how wrong I was. I think this is the best thing to come my way since Nightwish. I guess its much thanks to Larry and Ethan for playing this here. 👍

When it comes to the line "code of the air", this comes back from World war 1. At that time, airplanes were really rare, and were seen as prestigious form of warfare, so they were often crewed by noblemen from both sides. Many of those pilots stuck to an unwritten laws of warfare, like for example not shooting at burning plane, or later, after the usage of parachutes became common - not shooting at men who bailed out. And amongst fellow pilots, such code tended to stuck in between generation (although gradually disappearing). Many nations and cultures had no such thing. For example the Japanese were known for shooting at practically anyone and anything, as long as they had ammo, so there are hardly any occasions of knightly conduct in Japanese air force. Soviet air force was also similar to that. However countries like Germany or Great Britain still had pilots that followed that code even in World war 2. Franz Stigler did not invent this code, he was taught by his superior, who followed that code. That code was mostly followed on the western front, so not against Soviets, and mostly at the beginning of the war, when the situation wasnt yet completely desperate. For such incident to happen in 1943, it really required someone like Stigler, who was able to survive for such a long time, because many of those who followed that code didnt live that long.

Sabaton is a band with a loooong list of history based music. and also an award winning history channel (academic award! not music) that gives background to over 100 if their songs. Sabaton videos often have dedictions and/or messages at the end, perhaps not always but, watching to the very end is frequently well worth it. Animated STORY videos (short history lessons with music videos in them, just enough history to add tothefeel ofthemusic) No bullets fly Night witches Lady of the dark Red baron Christmas truce epic OFFICIAL videos. Bismark, about the sinking of the ship Defence of Moscow, self explained. Christmas truce, about the spontaneous truce in some parts of the western front during Christmas 1914 40:1, about polish soldiers, badly outnumbered (just under 750 in all) facing 42 000 germans, they where BADLY outgunned desperately defending against the German invasion 1939, they held their position for THREE DAYS. Uprising, the Warsaw Uprising against the nazi germans during 1944. To hell and back, they tell the story of Audie Murphy (highly decorated) and his struggle AFTER the war, so about PTSD and drug addiction that returning soldiers can face. Fields of verdun, the 300+ day long battle fought there. Price of a mile, about the battle of Passchendaele Screaming Eagles, about the battle of the bulge during ww2 1916 (cover of the Mötörhead song) the video is amazing Live performances 40:1 from poland Uprising from poland En livstid I krig live from Göteborg Sweden (in Swedish but there are subtitles) , very heavy again, about thoughts of a young man going to war. these are just some, there are plenty more from them

Great reaction to a great song and video. I can recommend a couple of songs for you with really awesome videos. Bismarck, its about one of the most feared warships during WW2. The British Navy succeeded in tracking it down and sink it. The video is breathtaking. Christmas truce, its about the short truce between Germans and British/French soldiers during Christmas eve during the WW1 in 1914. 1916, its a Motörhead cover with a very strong lyric and song. En livstid i krig (live from Gothenburg, Use captions while its in Swedish) about how it was to be a soldier during the 30 year war. To be born, rasied and during the wartime. Probably to fight a long side with you father. I can also recommend Sabatons own History Channel here on KZfaq. They give a deep background on their songs. Very amazing channel.
