Earthships have some really neat concepts, primarily maximizing solar gain and storing it in a huge thermal mass while using earth tubes for ventilation as needed. I don't think tires are the way to go for most people (it's for keeping your costs very minimal at the expense of huge amounts of labor.) I also looked into rammed earth and compressed earth blocks (CEB or PEB). I've settled on dry-stacking (and filling) cement blocks, insulation on the outside, and using a surface bonding cement/stucco to tie it together, and keeping the other concepts. Using that along with a solar collector for hot water and radiant floor heating I'm hoping to need virtually no other heating. I'm considering earthen floors. It'll be a lot of work but probably less than I'd need to do work to pay someone else to do it after taxes.

Cool that you're doing this! My folks live in a town that has one of the earlier earthships, the first in CO. When I was a little kid we went to a presentation on it, & I recently toured it when it was up for sale. I love the way they've made improvements on things like cooling using design similar to ancient Egyptian structures. Earth shelter with passive solar, in general, is a great choice when the solar orientation is available.

This is probably the best time of year for what y’all are doing there. Winter in Arizona is when y’all can work all day without killing yourself with the heat, but the season doesn’t last long. Summertime siesta is essential to survival there. I spent eight years in the Phoenix area, and for six months I pedaled a bicycle four miles to and from work in triple digits.

From what I've read - it's uncertain, but probably nothing significant. These are old, used tires. You do everything you can to keep moisture away from the walls and foundation, so they should be very stable and there's no water movement to carry anything around. And since they're old there shouldn't be much off-gassing either.

How does the earthship keep you out of the wars & other issue's going on around us, as the one lady was saying? 🤔 It's interesting & look fwd to seeing as much as possible from now to completion. Maybe build a barn or shed next. But yeah .. the questions been asked ... rubber wears out, chemicals that are in the tires, leach first. What makes this a safe option to build with vs straw bales, sandbags or something similar?

Its much easier and faster packing the dirt if you cut the sidewall out. This method is insanely time consuming doing it by hand without a pneumatic tamper. Its a fine way to buukd though if you have free labor.

Very interesting...I like reusing items to make things. A sustainable building is great. Do people use tires in all climates or just arid ones? I wonder how the last guy thinks projects work in solar if not with some type of profit making? Here in coastal NC we have put in 1,000's of acres of solar farms. Not sure they are so good... They take up land that was used for farming and the migratory waterfowl like swans don't use the areas any more.

I admire their work ethic, but I can't see the logic in spending years to build your house. Regarding no construction background, for centuries homes were build by people with no construction background. Its not rocket surgery. Plumb, Level, and square. 99% of these young people will never build an earthship of their own, but the experience teaches them how much work goes into things they never thought about AND teaches them a new respect for "dirty construction workers". (My buddies and I were once talked down to at McDonald's because we were so dirty. It had been a rough day.) I hope everyone learns what they came there to learn. Just a thought from a dumbassed welder... Why not cut out 1/2 or 1/3 of the sidewall on the TOP. Keep the "full sidewall"part facing the builder and have the cut out part be in the wall? Wouldn't that potentially help tie the wall together better and still have the "full tire" look and function on the outside of the wall? Or.... Cut out the sidewall 100% on the top like you do for 'farm roads". It would fill and pound easier/faster and still be structurally sound..

The earth ship movement has been around for about five decades. It is, in theory, a very good idea. The only issue is, land. The majority of these communities are in areas that aren’t conducive to a larger carrying capacity. In other words, all of the resources that are grown will not sustain a larger population. Another land issue. If private citizens don’t own it than the government does. And even if you own the land the governments have their arbitrary regulations. Some states have homestead rights. But the choosing is slim, and usually contested for the choicest lots. Finally, there aren’t many people that live this life long-term. So the ambassador populace is nearly non existent. If a celebrity would get on board than it would take off. But even these “green” celebrities are just corporate shills. Like greta thunberg.

Dennis Weaver, a celebrity from the 50's onward, was the first to build an Earthship in CO. He even went on the road to educate & encourage. His place is still there. Historic & lovely. @@asktheanimals see reference: “… from the 50’s…” sample size: 1 Celebrity chain-establishment: non existent. Would be nice if there were more. And I still don’t understand the radon testing. At least that I know of in my neck of the woods.

About every 20 years great ideas like this resurface. The drivers that make the idea attractive come and go. The off grid community and nomad community has exploded in the last 20 years. The early vision Mike had was far out but now its more and more familiar. Ideas of solar power and devices geared to it has expanded. Solar mass isa being employed much morepossible widely than ever before. So easentially the world isa catching up to a visionay idea.
