@Sovereign I don't see it quite the way you do. Throughout the whole movie, all he's been doing is killing people. Who had he spared? so yeah, it was never stated he would kill the store owner. But if I remember the ending of the movie, he did a coin toss with the woman. She lost and died. So, we can naturally imply that would have been the result with the store owner in the earlier part of the movie. Can you see what I'm saying? @@Redrum-707 i dont think that was chiggurs plan. Chiggur only hands people a coin if they have a slighted him, not if they are an obstacle. Obstacles to him are removed, the cashier just annoyed him and put himself in his crosshairs by asking too many questions. He absolutely would have killed the cashier if he didnt get heads. Do you remember the accountant? He asked "Do you see me" with a smile. The accountant avoided his crosshairs by avoiding stupid questions, hence chiggur didn't really notice him.

@@raizereaper4697 chiggur beleives that it is up to fate wether or not somebody who is seen as a witness to be killed, or somebody who generally had nothing to do with the situation. He doesn't like taking unnecessary risks and justifies his killings with fate. There's a whole character dissection on him. You should see it, it's really good.

Anton Chigurh alleviates any guilt he feels by putting it up to fate. He believes, in a sense, that he is the very hand of fate, which is why he insists the cashier calls the coin toss. As an instrument of “fate” he believes he should only execute it, not hold sway over it.

I was so confused by this movie when I was younger but now that in older it makes so much sense. Chigurh sees himself as an angel of fate, heads or tails, it determines weather you die or not. It's the same thing he did to (I forgot the main character cowboy guys name) wife. She refused to play so refusal to play his game means your fate is death.

This movie had great actors and the story/script was top notch so no need for music to carry the scenes.

i think thats just wishful thinking my friend, its hard to understand a true psychopath like chigur but i mean the man is a force of reckoning in the screenplay. he shows absolutely no remorse for any of his actions but unlike other psychopaths, chigur doesn't seem to enjoy it either. its almost as if it just needs to be done. im very sure that if the screenplay called for it and the proprietor failed the coin flip, chigur wouldve walked out of that gas station checking his boots.

@Reunite The British Empire exactly, the old man accepts his fate and calls it. He accepts his judgement and his destiny, and in a way he is saved by that. Which is in contrast to Thano's wife at the end of the film, who refuses to accept that same judgement (a call at a coin toss), and suffers by it. In both cases Chigurh sees himself as an instrument of deliverance of that justice. Or something.

Or...he's just fuckin with him, which also fits the character.

I get your take. I think he would be fine with it either way. The way he sees it, its just. The coin makes the decision not him. If the coin says heads then he should be pitied, a worthless peasant able to finish out his life. If its tails, he should be despised for his weakness, a waste, and removed from the earth. Chigur sees understands this, that he is both, and the coin simply dictates the action to be taken. So it doesn't matter either way. There's always a reason to kill him and there's always a reason to spare him. So the coin will sort it out.

If he feels he has to kill someone to continue his mission then these people are the victims of fate, not him. However, there are people he doesn't have to kill, these people he will give them something like a coin toss. He lets fate decide their fate.

It’s the right way to write a script tbh, you leave the actions and performance to the director and cast mostly (unless it’s something of extreme importance to the script)

Chigur is all about being above fate and proving that you can make your own path. Fate is something for other people. However, he comes across someone so meek and mild that they've never lived their life, just lived it on autopilot.

It would've deprived the scene of its mystery and ambiguity if they made his resentment for the clerk so obvious.

Giving him a racist side of him detracts from the sheer terror of his philosophy and it doesn't fit, since to him the coin toss is all that really matters. Racism is a familiar thing, it detracts from a villain and it would have given him an explainable reason for his madness.

Also, it's a life changer for the clerk but for Chigurh, it really wasn't. The guy life could have ended because of that quarter but if Chigurh killed him, it would have been nothing more than a typical Tuesday for him.
