Worked in automotive for 36 yrs, and I am retired and recently have been looking on YT to refresh memory a bit. I found your videos to be interesting and in this scenario kinda funny cause I've run into this type of issue a few times. The only thing I can say is that I was taught to first check the battery and it's connections and a quick volt drop test with headlights on will check cables for you. The start relay, if there's easy access, is a great quick check, then scratch your head and go from there. Please keep up the great work your doin', I'd bet a lot of techs and do it yourself home boys have gotten good tips from you, and by the way. don't worry about the length of the videos, it never hurts to hear that little extra info or tip. Keep it up :-)

It goes to the old saying "if you know how it works first then you own it". I was with you all the way and knew you were a good mechanic when you said lets solve one problem at a time. first rule is dont skip around you verify two and three times before you lmove to the next possibility. Iam suprised you didnt see that after market kill switch mounted on the dash. I just found your channel today and cannot believe what a good mechanic you are. I understand your mobile service to auto shops because allmost no one understands electrical. just using a ten dollar test light is all you need. Although I would have used a multimeter to test for lproper voltage and ohms from connection to connection with a twenty foot clip cord you can move around the auto with. I cannot wait to follow your videos. I'll sure to learn something. Although I retired two years ago after thirty eight years in the mechanical trades. Thank You!!!!!!

I was just having this problem with my 2011 scion tc I literally didn’t believe this man when he pulled out the hammer and tapped the starter. When I tell you the car started up and I was baffled 😂😂😂. Mans a mechanical magician 😂🔥💯.

Don't worry bout your presentation.It's fine!! n You make this all make sense which it a great accomplishment. I'm 63 and just got my 98 grand running again thanks to you.ASD relay bad. contacts burnt changed relay n jeep started but cranked slowly.Had plenty of voltage at starter while cranking so I dropped the starter n opened the thing up. bearings were so worn the armature was scraping!! Never seen that in 50 years!!!.New starter new ASD relay.Good to go. Your approach and a step at a time did it.Thanx!!

Iv been breaking my head the last 2 hours looking at wiring diagrams trying to diagnose same issue on my Jeep. I threw in a new switch because I was confident that was the issue little did I know that it wouldn't be. I spent another hour back tracing my diagnosing and researching on the internet on similar problems but nothing related since I was already far into my diagnosing. Then just for the heck of it since I love watching your videos I watch this. You mention the box thing that seems to be a aftermarket kill switch and it clicks in my head "hold up iv seen something like that on this jeep before tucked away" and guess what I find? The kid I bought it from had wired this thing into the ignition. Lesson learned ladies and gentlemen....

I love this kind of video because it's real world. It's where the average tech learns something that will help him/her. Guys that make videos after they've spent a week figuring out what was wrong and posting the solution in a three minute video teaches us nothing. Yes, it makes the tech posting look brilliant because it looks like he tracked the problem down in thirty seconds or less, but it doesn't give us a hint of the process necessary to track down a real world frustrating problem. That's why I like you (oh, and I bought your book) and Eric O and I'll give a thumbs up to Ivan. Keep up the wonderful work you do.

I stumbled across this after searching how to test relays and testing the starter. After proving that the starter gets power from the relay when jumped, I needed some more juicy stuff to understand how these circuits are built. Finding this is priceless and every step of the way is gold. I'm an amateur and I don't usually fix things on a car but recently I've been trying to figure things out and wow has this been one of the most exciting and enlightening videos. I had a no crank issue on my 99 jeep cherokee that I have been trying to diagnose for weeks. 7.5 years later and this lead me right to the issue at hand... aftermarket alarm. Cut it out, rewired, and she fired up immediately. This long form video really really helped me to understand how to diagnose my problem correctly. I cannot explain how grateful I am!

Paul, Love your troubleshooting technique on this no start/crank Jeep. These after market alarms can be a pain if you don't have the schematics, etc. or if you're buddy calls you over with a no start and doesn't tell you the immobilizer/alarm is engaged. Happened to me with a Nissan, I was able to crank it and start after I jumped a few connections, and then he told me sorry the alarm/immobilizer had been engaged. I agree it's great fun when you start narrowing and isolate the problem, troubleshooting is fun and a challenge for me. There's really not many if any electrical I can't solve in an automotive 12 V DC system. Keep the great work and I love the length of your videos!!!

Nicely done. Owner of a 97 Jeep Wrangler here and was dealing with a no crank no start. Thanks to this great video, I was able to determine that I have a bad Park/Neutral switch. I'm not interested in dropping a pan for the switch just yet, so chasing wires I found the pigtail splice under the driver's dash and bypassed the switch for now. Thanks, and keep up the good work!

I noticed the jumper wire thing on the wiring diagram,and was suspicious of it..once you confirmed that it was an open between there and the switch,I immediately suspected an aftermarket alarm,or something playing up. Bingo! Good stuff. It's always 'fun' when new parts are faulty.

Ooooooomg! Brilliant! Since my husband passed.....I cannot bare to take my car to any mechanic because of crap like this! Did a mechanic put after market stuff on this Jeep? I have never met anyone as intelligent as my husband finding issues like this.... except you! My husband had his PHD in Mechanical Engineer, but he could do anything on a car and anything around the house! I’m sorry, but I feel the mechanic that was suppose to of put the new ignition switch in this vehicle! I’ve been watching your videos trying to figure out why my 2006 Hyundai Elantra no start and no crank! I’ve pretty much understood your other videos due to you explaining so well. But this one was a little over my head, I am going to watch it again! I’m probably going to have to take it to a shop and I hate to have to do that, but I can’t see myself buying test equipment unless I was ever going to use it ever again. I had a new alternator put on in 2017 a new battery as well. I have a new car now, but I need to find the problem with the Elantra so I can sell it. It’s been a great car up until my husband passed and then everything started going wrong with it, my husband drove it so I figure it misses him! I love to see a person so enthused and passionate with what they do and you even stated you had fun troubleshooting and finding out what the problem was. I can see you are a wonderful instructor in the classroom, your students are so fortunate to have a person so brilliant and passionate about what he does! Even though I am a woman and way too old now to crawl under a car, after watching this video and your others, they make me want to figure out the answer to what’s wrong with my car. There would be no way I could crawl under the dashboard and lay on my back like you had to for very long! I might be able to get down...I just wouldn’t be able to get back up and then when I did, I’d be sore for the next week! Hahahahaha.... I’ve written too much, I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed watching you work and troubleshoot and figure out the problem...you made it so interesting and you kept this 62 year old woman’s interest until then end! I thank you for that:)

ScannerDanner You made a comment about people thinking your videos are too long. Please never change the length and detail in your videos. As a technician in the field with just over 2 years experience, your videos would lose value to me if they started going more towards the silver bullet side. Excellent stuff. Thank you. Just trouble shot my own TJ 2001 after watching your video. Had exactly the same situation of an after market device that was spliced into the yellow wire. Removed that and then replaced both the switch and the actuator only to discover that I also had an intermittent problem with the "clutch depressed" switch. Rather than replace that, I simply jumpered it out with a fuse in the fuse box. Total cost to fix was less than fifty dollars. Your trouble shooting was extremely helpful to my own diagnostic endeavor.

I had the same issues with a bad "new" fuel pump relay. Scratched my head and used the troubleshooting skills I learned watching you and figured out the relay was still bad. Now I got to figure out why my old Chevy truck won't crank...

Hey Scanner - A lesson well learned here, after market people don't know what is involved when adding parts - taking time, looking at everything possible till the diagnosis is make - very good video I will show my class this .

This has to be one of your more entertaining videos! I've watched it a couple of times before too. A true thrill to watch, very good diagnosis. I love your classroom-stuff too, but these practical ones with twists such as this one is just very satisfying to watch :) Very good teaching moment for real life situations. What are the odds of that new switch being bad, and the problem was somewhere else all along?? Haha! Just a great video, man. Keep it up! Great channel you've got! :) Greetings from Norway

Paul, I stumbled on this while troubleshooting my jeep....Let me say I really enjoyed your diagnosis and it was helpful because I replaced a bad starter but still no start when replaced. Well, no after market but it did end up being my 40AMP ignition fuse. I originally looked at that but I had the wrong 40 amp forgot I was looking at the diagram upside down...sure enough it was bad. and everything worked. I look forward to learning more....

Mr danner , that was great to watch, an education in diagnosis- piece by piece, any other person on there bad day would fling a starter motor, relay etc at it, it might be a one off to fix, but that = £ pounds/dollars , what you did there was persistence in engineering, it only cost you time, and time is endless , great work , wether it took 5 min or 5 hrs or 5 days , the customer has a smile on there face that's all it counts 👍🏼

Another great vid that illustrates how we sometimes deal with multiple problems. Aftermarket alarm poorly installed and broken to boot. Poor quality parts that were broke from the start. Classic Danner is good stuff. His brother James has some real good ones too on his channel.
