If you are running into a problem where your fishfinder will not display the depth/bottom reading or its losing bottom contact I go though some troubleshooting that you can do to narrow down the problem.

These processes will work on any brand of sonar unit or fish finder that isn't reading the depth like Humminbird, Garmin, Lowrance, Eagle, Raymarine, Furuno, Simrad, Vexilar, MarCum, etc

In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens kzfaq.infoUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.

Will try some of what you said,, very good video,, very informative and easy to understand,, good job ! I have the elite 5 that gets stuck in the 2 ft mode and i have to turn off and restart..

Try putting it in Shallow Water mode. That will fix that problem unless you have a hardware issue. Search my channel for the ice fishing Elite videos and use those settings for open water. That will be good for your issue.

Wow taken me 1 week and numerous phone calls. Last segments about depth reading only 2:1 ft. Our hook 2 triple shot only 1 week old, 2 trip this is exactly what it’s doing. Thank you Will try manual range tonight. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Yeah most in the customer service departments today won't know about that. Has been happening since the LCX units in the early 2000s. Haven't heard of it much lately but can still happen.

Lawren Wetzel you are showing this test on water right? Can you check a transducer out of the water on ur driveway ? Or it needs to be sumerge?

Yes this is done on the water. You can try it if the water but it may not give you accurate results. The resistance of air is less than water so sounds travels faster and everything in the unit is thrown off out of the water

Would these fixes be the same for the newer Lowrance Elite FS7? I just got a new Nitro Z18 with a Ghost trolling motor and I'm not getting any down imaging or 2D on the bow unit. I'm assuming it's a simple setting issue but the Lowrance owner's manual really sucks IMO.

Thanks for this video! Going to try resetting our unit as it is losing digital depth at anything less than 8-9 feet...for general would would you recommend a 15 foot range with max pings?

Biggest thing to do is set the Fishing Mode to shallow water mode. This will help a lot if it is a software related problem. I'd also put the unit in manual mode and see if the problem persists. If it does, then you likely have a faulty unit or transducer. If not, then its just the unit getting confused for whatever reason.

I'm doing a "shoot thru" hull on my kayak. I am using a duct seal and not epoxy to keep the transducer in place. Should the duct seal be between the transducer and hull or just surrounding the transducer to keep it in place so that it doesn't move around. I'm getting good readings but sometimes loses depth and sonar completely then comes back.

Use epoxy for the best results. Otherwise you will likely have problems.

Hi lawren, my hook2 7 ts with GPS started getting vertical lines in screen. All the depth and water temp is working. Seems like it's giving false or confusing sonar readings. The only thing I did different was added my maps card in slot. Thanks for any help

Do you have any other depth sounders, manufacturer engine gauges, or fish finders on the boat? Most times vertical lines on the screens are caused by another transducer on the boat. What happens if you take the map card out? Do the lines go away?

Great video.Thanks for making this type of video.I am still trying to figure out why my Elite 7 chirp I got two years ago just stops like the stop chart function is activated like here on your video.It stays this way for about 20 seconds or so and starts again This is drifting or going slow.New update did not help.Resetting did not help.Unit was replaced and transducer was replaced by lawrance.Cannot get a clear answer from anyone.This gets to be annoying.I will try rechecking some of the settings.It is very random.It may be getting "confused" like you say in the video,but this should not happen.I fish mainly small lakes with lots of weeds.Chirp maybe overkill for me.Tried using 200khz and still does it.

Almost sounds like you have another unit on that is interfering with the unit.

Hello, at 5:25 what are the 45 degree lines goin up to the right? I get a lot of these while using my Garmin striker while moving at 2mph. What I mean by a lot is 20 or 30 of these lines in all depths of water. And when in shallow water I can see there are no fish under my kayak, but I still get these lines. Could this be an issue with my sensitivity?

I’m having an issue where my depth and down scan comes and goes, but I still have side scan. If I shut off the unit and turn it back on, it will work again, but will go back to doing what it was I have a Hook Reveal 9 TS and I’m still learning the ins and outs of this device.

Most likely an issue with the unit or transducer. I'd find out the hard reset procedure for that unit and try that first. Also make sure the transducer connector is seated properly in the unit as those ones can come out due to not having a locking collar

Good video as I just got a HDs 8 gen 2. But I’m am having a no source on my side scan And the box is working I have power light on and transducer light is blinking and the Ethernet ports are blinking on any port I try on the module Not sure what the heck is going on and I am using the side scan hd with the hd transducer

My fishfinder shuts down every two minutes or so. I have to turn it back on and seem very slow to come back on. Any ideas on possible reason?

Contact the manufacturer and have them give you a Hard Reset procedure. If it is a software glitch this should solve it for you. Otherwise, you probably have a defective unit, problem with power cable, weak power supply, etc

Under Units in the menu you can change the depth from Meters to Feet.

What is the difference between Hook9 service replacement, and a new Hook9

A Hook9 Service Replacement would be a unit that Lowrance has specifically to replace a defective Hook9. They would be the head only, with no accessories at all and packaged in a brown box. They may or may not be refurbished.

Thanks for the comprehensive trouble shooting guide! I have an HDS12 Gen3. I am getting an accurate graphical display of the surface and the bottom, but no digital depth, speed, or fish returns. On occasion, I get a digital depth, but it is inevitably inaccurate and tends to jump from one number to another. For example, I can be in 10 feet of water and it will jump from --- to 76 to 32, and back to ---. The boat is now out of the water, and the through-hull transducers are clean. I don't have a second Lowrance to swap out. All of my boating friends have Garmin or Raymarine, so there is no option to swap with them. Given that I see the bottom in the graphic display, I tend to believe that this is a problem with the HDS12, but I'd love to be able to confirm it before sending it in for repair. Any ideas? Thanks again!

Do a hard reset on the unit and that will likely fix your issue. It will delete all waypoints though

@@InDepthSonar Thanks, I tried that, and also reinstalled the latest software. I even bought a smaller, used Lowrance HDS on Ebay to swap out. A cautionary word on that option - make sure that your transducers will work with whatever unit you want to swap out - mine didn't. The plugs all looked similar, but the pins were different. Thanks again for the input.

All HDS units are the same transducer connector for the 7 pin blue port. As long as it is Lowrance transducer you're using it'll work.

@@InDepthSonar Apologies, you are correct. Apparently, the gentleman I bought the used Lowrance HDS-5 from also threw in another transducer from a different brand sonar system. I had the wrong one in hand when I tried connecting the first time. The Lowrance transducer that came with the used Lowrance HDS-5 I bought is not listed as compatible with my HDS-12 Gen 3, but I tried it anyway. I still get the "---" depth reading, but the boat is currently out of the water and I get a "---" depth reading when I connect the used transducer on the HDS-5. I'm also not getting a depth reading from my Raymarine tridata unit, so I'm guessing that I can't trouble shoot this properly with the boat on land. I was hoping to determine the cause before launching so I'd know if I had a faulty HDS-12 or faulty transducers.

Good tutorial! Thanks! Hook Reveal 7 Tripleshot. NEW unit. No depth reading, just 3 dashes, but showed images on the graph. Lots of noise, mostly surface, even at 8' of water, it didn't show a "bottom". Back at the dock, turned off Auto Range and turned on Downscan....showed a depth of 29'....sitting in 3' at the dock. Tried to go back to Auto and turn off Downscan and lost the depth, repeated the steps...never showed any depth! Tried soft and hard reset...no change. Returned it

I have to admit....operator error! 2' of water over 3' of soft mud....doesn't give a return signal! Went out from my dock....bingo, it reads depth!

My buddy has an Elite 9ti2 and we are losing depth when we are on plane. The paperwork that came with the unit says it's possible to lose depth at speeds of 55 or more but we feel this shouldn't happen. It's important to know the depth of the water at all times especially when running at higher speeds. He replaced a previous unit, an HDS 8 that was doing the same thing and after talking with Lowrance, he was told to do a software update and that should fix it but it didn't. This past weekend was our first time using the unit and we'll try some of the tips you suggested in the video but do you have any other tips or suggestions on why this unit loses depth and how to fix it. I've spoke with Lowrance and they say transducer location and turbidity causing the lose of signal. We have the transducer mounted at a good location on the transom, yet not too low for water to hit it and flip it up some, it was still level when we trailered the boat!

100% it's how the transducer is mounted. If you've got 2 units doing the same thing it's mounting. 55mph is really good and you might not get any better. I've got readings at 70mph plus before but that is rare. I would start by playing with the angle of the transducer and the height of it. I'm not saying you didn't mount it right... And it sounds like you did if you're getting 55mph.... But you now just have to tweak it a little too try and get more... But 55mph is a lot so that might be the best you'll get.

@@InDepthSonar The HDS8 that came on the boat was losing depth when we were sitting still. The Elite9 is at least working while we are trolling around. We'll double check the transducer and speak with a rep and see what they say. One lake my buddy use to fish is Oolagah Lake, that lake you can go from 30ft to 3ft in the blink of an eye. Running at 60MPH on that lake with no depth reading on the display can be deadly. Luckily most of the lake we fish, we know pretty good but still manufactures of these unit need to solve that problem of no depth display at certain speeds.

You can use them up to 70mph. So it's more of an issue of water flow off the hill and transducer location and angle than it is of a manufacturer shortcoming

Is there a reason why my sonar scroll will randomly slow down to -1 scroll speed (I know that’s not a setting but it slows down super slow) from my 2x scroll speed settings I have my unit set to? The setting never actually changes but the unit like stalls then speeds back up. The unit only seems to do it in Auto range and in 200Hz. I have always just set my depth like you have said in your other videos but I been fishing a river that I go from 5ft to 60ft multiple times a day and just got tired of changing the depth so I wanted the auto to work. Or is this a reason why you never used auto mode?

This sounds like the unit is losing bottom. Your right this is typical when using auto mode and it's over of the reasons I like manual mode instead. The computer is losing bottom for some reason (weak transducer, interference, etc) so it slows the scroll speed down to hopefully find it quicker again.

Turn off auto mode and see if the problem goes away. If not it's a faulty unit or transducer

I removed the transducer from the thru hull and mounted it on the transom.. But still get sonar but not depth... 3 dashes... Any suggestions to look at? Thanks Joe

Try all the things in this video. If that doesn't work then you likely have a hardware problem that you need to replace the unit or transducer

I have a Lowarance Elite 4 DSI which suddenly doesn't show an image. It shows depth, speed, is illuminated, ducer is parallel, and clean, but just black where there should be structure, fish, bottom, etc. Any ideas? Thanks!

Sounds like a bad transducer or unit. Only way to know is try a known good one too isolate the problem. Also make sure the transducer plug is secure in the back of the unit

Great videos,, except my issue isn't covered here. When I turn my HDS5 on, the screen is barely visible in daylight. I have to move it around to get an angle where I can see it. Really can't see to make adjustments etc.. but can see enough to tell the unit is on and reading depth. Any idea?

Sounds like your backlight is off or defective. Press the power button a few times to cycle through the backlight levels. If nothing happens you have a defective back like. I have a video on my channel about that called Lowrance Unit Not Turning On

Sir I just received my item GARMIN STRIKER 4 the problem is it only shows blue screen with no depth, no bottom landscape, no fish Indicated,, Hope somebody can help me out

If you have tried the troubleshooting recommended in this video then I would say you have a problem somewhere and should contact Garmin for a replacement unit or transducer

I have a hook2 7. Clean out the debris in the transducer and I make sure all connection are connected. Still won't read the depth. Check connection for corrosion but none.. swap out battery but nothing help... swap my unit onto a different transducer and my unit still not reading it. What advice can you give me??

Ensure you have the correct transducer selected in the Sonar Installation menu (not sure if this is something you can do on the Hook2, but check). If not then it sounds like you have a defective unit. Call Lowrance for warranty

I too have a Hook2 7 w/ a Tripleshot transducer. It read correctly since day 1 but during fishing my sonar screen turned orange and I lost depth reading also. When I got home I double checked my transducer cable to ensure it was plugged in correctly. I'm assuming it will make no sense to observe a depth reading in the garage, correct? Thought I ask

HDS10 temp all ways reads 131 degrees. through hull transducer.

+Stephen Wood That's either a bad unit or temp sensor. Try the unit on a good known transducer. If it's the transducer that failed because it's a thru hull you might just want to pick up a nmea2000 temp sensor and add that on.

i have a lowrance hook 2 4x bullet attached to trolling motor , it showed depth up until 50 feet , then i had no depth and many verticle lines and screens (?) with 0's going across the top and 100's going across the bottom, overlapping....... how can i fix this ?

Sounds like the auto mode might be getting confused. Try "restore default" in the menu, then turn auto depth and sensitivity to manual. Adjust them accordingly and see if the problem is resolved.

Lawren Wetzel i was watching it today, at forty to fifty feet it set auto depth to sixty, ....same issue.... i looked at the different depth options and fifty is not listed ..... the deepest this lake is = fiftyfeet. i did play with sensitivity and noise reduction - off / low / high ,.... noise reduction at high got me to forty five feet ...... i forgot what i had sensitivity at, i will redo and remember next time. how would i do depth manual ? .... as the screen freaks out increase depth, i am guessing ?

ok, so i took it back to store, it was determined as defective transducer,... i will try this exchanged one and see if i get same results as having the transducer out of water on auto depth - with 0's going across top and numbers going across bottom - overlapping

You would increase the depth as you need to based on the bottom reading. If the bottom goes off the screen you will increase the depth range

I have an HDS 5. My issue happens when I am moving or start to move, I almost get broken vertical lines and no digital depth. Even after I stop it takes quite a while for it to start reading accurately again. Any ideas? It has a brand new transducer

If you've tried a new transducer then likely it is the unit or transducer placement. Do a hard reset on the unit and if that doesn't solve the problem you can try to adjust how it is mounted.

Hey there maybe someone can help.. Bought hook2 7x in August 2018. Worked perfecty fine before storing boat for winter. Just put boat in water today and there is no depth or temp reading. 2d sonar shows a white screen and di, Si show nothing aswell. The transducer was not moved or hit while In storage. Tried restoring to factory settings and still the same problem. Any trouble shooting advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance..

It's weird you posted this mine is doing the same thing. Bought it new july 24 2018. I have a thin line at the top and the depth os flashing no temp reading or anything. My side scan is showing a thin line coming down with a bunch of short hash marks on both sides.

It's either the unit or transducer. Follow the tips in this video as much as you can. Otherwise call Lowrance and send your unit and transducer to them for testing

@@littleleadpill7189 this is what the lowrance Rep told me to do. I know this sounds basic but it is a common issue. Unplug your transducer and lightly lubricate around the 2 ribbed rings around the plug, next index the plug correctly and make sure the transducer cable is inserted fully until it is seated.......then push it in a little more. This is the cause about 95% of the time and having no temperature is usually the giveaway that the plug isn't in all the way. Will be out on the water this weekend and will try the plug again.. Will let y'all know

Every single bass fisherman in American. Many have more than 2. And most have friends who own units so if they each only have 1...then there is the second one. That's who seriously the F has them.
