See the results in late summer of my methods. No dig, seasonal planting, interplanting, pest prevention and continuous propagation.
We can’t have a crowd here in 2020 so I take you around the garden with a camera. This video supersedes yesterday's one with poor sound. I hope you can all hear me this time.
Thanks to those of you who appreciated the earlier video.
.
You see a quarter acre or 1000sqm of intensively cropped ground. Most beds now have second plantings. We make no new addition of compost or feeds for these. Compost is added just once a year.
Wire for cloche hoops is lengths of 2-2.5m of 4mm galvanised wire, from Reddifast Steel.
Brassica spray against caterpillars is Bacillus thuringiensis. A soil bacteria, see link below to buy it.
Homeacres total area including house is 3/4 acre or 3000sqm. I have been here for eight years. It was weedy pasture before.
See my book for explanation of no dig and using these methods to convert weedy ground to productive soil.

My online courses teach you how to achieve this, with many private videos www.charlesdowding.co.uk/stor...
I mention Which? Gardening magazine, who I write for, and you can subscribe with a special offer here try.which.co.uk/gardening-mem...
Bacillus thuringiensis - my recommendation is to use search, to find Dipel on eBay.
Climate is temperate oceanic. In August we had 125mm or 5in rain, and average temperature was 18.5C 65F, night and day. Officially this is zone 8, but summers are cooler and winters milder.

I found you at the beginning of lockdown by pure accident Charles so how lucky am i. I've been so inspired by your gardening style especially during lockdown. i bought one of your books and today i ordered your calendar so I am looking forward to it. I will open it the minute it arrives, I'm too excited to wait until 2021!! My garden is only 10 by 10 metres so I am observing you closely on how you sow and plant to make the most of a small garden. I have even ordered a victoria plum on pixie root stock after seeing yours in one of your you tube videos. I could ramble on but for now, thankyou for the great vids they're brilliant. I live in Manchester and pass through the villages including Bruton village two or three times a year. If I listen carefully, might i hear you practicing ringing those church bells??? !!!! Thanks again Charles. 🙂 regards Jaci from up north.

I am so glad I found your channel last year. I put in 96sqft of no-dig square foot beds in February and I cannot believe how well they've done! It was my first real garden and I have had incredible success. I would never have imagined that I could get a garden as nice as yours in my very first year. I have poblano pepper plants that are over 6 feet tall! I'm still learning about how plants like to grow in my area but I'm already planning on more than doubling my planting space because it's so easy to take care of. Thank you!!!

BTW, because you will be the only one who understands how awesome this is: I put in 61 various lettuces and 3 radicchio in my raised bed, which we've built a double-layered mini greenhouse to hopefully keep going over winter here in central PA. (I eat a LOT of lettuce!) Almost *every* time I stuck the dilbler in, I bothered a worm. Easily knocked around 50+ worms. My soil has never been so beautiful after only one year of implementing your strategies.

@@CharlesDowding1nodig I thought I saw a Libre sensor poking out of your sleeve in a video once, but forgot to go back and check. Unfortunately, my methods don't work for T1, just for T2. I've seen a number of T1s get significantly healthier and reduce their insulin usage, but they had a lot of insulin resistance on top of T1. My guess is that is not the case with you.

Charles Dowding Dear Charles, good luck with your efforts to balance diabetes. When you chased yourself from the raspberries I wondered if that was it. I have several friends who are using different techniques to balance their bodies and fortify their insulin response. I have an atypical insulin response that is not diabetes but could cause pancreatic damage- and which falls outside of the medical model, so I keep reading and experimenting and talking with friends: trying to find ways to heal. (I also graduated in 1980 so perhaps we are the same generation. ) Working in a garden is probably a huge benefit. 🙂👍I have heard some interesting things. For example, I’ve been told that eating certain things can reset and balance sugar response... like animal fats in small doses, (specifically bacon! while I felt the better bet would be vegetarianism- which I know is also essential to the planet), eating sesame seeds, hydration with watermelon juice, a few other specific thyroid enrichment foods... doesn’t it sound like there is a systemic metabolic balance, much like a well balanced compost, that needs to be achieved? I wish you luck finding healing. The world needs you for at least another 20- 40 years! Thank you for all your wonderful videos, books, and reference materials. I have also been reading the eccentric Ruth Stout, a no dig gardener in Nebraska after the 1930’s depression and the dust bowl. I am quarantining with my elderly mother nearby in Zone 4b with a nice south vista and nearly constant wind. I am planning my no dig garden and testing various ways to manage the wind. I’m going to plant densely, cover small plants, start plants for an extra week or two, hardscape paths (maybe using the ubiquitous clay soil and and some sand over a very thin layer of cardboard). I love your beautiful tripod bean support. it might work in a 40 mph wind and shelter other plants. I’m thinking of doing substantial cold framing from Sept to May with perhaps a lean-to rough green house on the side of a small garage. I will see what I can produce! I had some success with test salad plants in June but by August it was a furnace. I think maybe everything has to be timed to give the entire area a break in August, it’s too hot for me to work outside then. I will be watching for cold weather plants, though they will need to survive at least a couple of dips below 0F in January ❄️🌬

My goodness Charles! I watched the first video with my sound turned up full and I could hear you, despite being deaf in one ear, I was slightly cross about the people who complained, to my astoundment you have done another one! Firstly what a complete pro to do that whole tour of your garden with just one take, that was an incredible piece of narration well done. I was hoping to come and see your garden this year, I have all your books and Steph’s too, and was only looking in the diary a few weeks ago thinking ‘I am sure thats not going to happen this year’. It has been an absolute pleasure to walk with you around your garden on KZfaq and even though I have visited you a few times and been on your course twice I still managed to learn a few more things. Thank you so much for what you do to enlighten people about no dig, I think people forget that you do this out of the kindness of your heart, to spread the word about organic gardening and Not Dig’. I am truly appreciative of all the advice you have given everybody over the years and wish you even more success for the future. Thank you again and if Steph is reading this, her videos on Instagram of her garden are wonderful. Sending you both lots of love from Hertfordshire, I am off to put my wellies on now and get cracking in the garden, it seems I have a lot to catch up on . . .❤️🌻💐

Thanks for all you do, you inspired me to start growing things and right now I'm working on my 10m x 10m growing area with the intent of planting fall veggies before winter sweeps in. We grew corn for the first time this year with beans in between the rows They were soup beans not growing too high but not a bush bean either Anyway they grew up holding onto the corn but not buggin the corn either They did well dig or no dig gardens like this The beans kept the wind off the bottom of the corn helping them stay up in the winds The corn did well the beans did well We put squash winter ones around the outside of the block and they are doing well too

Wild Edibles I love learning about how our ancestors survived and it goes to show that mother nature knows best and how to keep sustainable and that it is us the human who thinks they know what is the right way to do things, when really we don't need to intervene quite as much as we have been led to believe. The old saying of keep it simple rings true here, why make so much back breaking work for yourself when you can let it get on with it? Lovely to make your acquaintance. Mr. Dowding, greetings from hot and humid Zone 7b North Carolina, USA. I really enjoyed BOTH videos. If one thinks about it, the first video was in a way a happy accident. We could hear the insects, the birds, footsteps, the airplane overhead, and the breeze blowing with your voice fading the further you stepped away just as it would be if we were on-site on an in-person tour. Huge thanks to you and your son for taking the time to shoot the video again with the directional audio. The look of the diamond pattern of the red lettuce near your house interplanted with the green (spinach?) at 18:25 is phenomenal. Another advantage of interplanting with transplants instead of interplanting with seed is that one won't remove the seedlings when they germinate forgetting they were planted and thinking they are weeds. Not that I've ever done that. 🤥😊

Hi Charles, we’ve had a hurricane come up from the gulf and bring a lot of rain the last few days. We needed the rain though. Looks good what you’ve got. I’m planting winter stuff now. Still have a lot of summer stuff. Wish I had more growing space like you. Love your greenhouses. I’ve got a very very small one. It does good though for my garden space. Thank you for sharing. (Old guy from Arkansas)🇺🇸

Love your marigolds in the polytunnel! I added marigolds to my tomato rows for the first season as well. I found an appreciable improvement in roots health and a reduction of aphids. Coincidence? I'll tell you next year.

You are so lucky Mr. Dowding. You have rain regularly. Her is California we rarely have rain in the summer. All of our gardening has to be irrigated. And that is why your gardens are so green and lush. Great video !
