More than 400 people have reportedly been detained in Russia for publicly mourning the death of Alexei Navalny, who died in an Arctic penal colony on Friday at age 47. He was the most prominent critic of Vladimir Putin in Russia and was serving a 19-year sentence at the time of his death on “extremism” charges. U.S. President Joe Biden and other Western leaders directly have blamed Putin for Navalny’s death. Prison authorities say Navalny died of “sudden death syndrome,” but his family has not yet been given access to his body to allow for an independent autopsy. For more, we speak with Russian American writer Masha Gessen, who charts Navalny’s political evolution from an ethnonationalist libertarian tapping into “xenophobic discontent” to an anti-corruption activist promoting a vision of civic nationalism. “I have no doubt … that he was killed,” says Gessen. “Putin was determined to see Navalny die in prison.”

Navalny was a CIA and MI 6 asset. The West poured a lot of money into him. He was NOT popular in Russia. 56% of Russians disliked him. 18% liked him. You can see his racist videos where he calls Central Asians ‘insects’ and Georgians ‘rodents. Navalny was a traitor put there by the West to overthrow the government. He was NOT starved. He went on a hunger strike and had heart failure. He was never poisoned. I am surprised you have not done your homework on this. I do not subscribe to you anymore on KPFK in LA. Everyone watch the interviews between Judge Napolitano and Scott Ritter and Alexander Mercouris analysis on this. They speak the truth. Amy it is NOT Putin’s regime. Putin was elected and has 86% popularity. SHAME ON YOU AMY. You should give equal time to those who experienced Navalny in Russia. Just 14, 500 people follow Navalny in Russia. Yale is a place where CIA trains assets! Hysteria over this but not over Gazans.

The timing of Navalny's death is strange. It made the major interview of Putin by Tucker Carlson for US consumption less relevant, it puts Putin in a worse light after the Ukrainian army retreated from Avdiivka, Navalny's wife was at teh Munich conference. Navalny was in prison anyway... It seems that his death right now would be counterproductive for the Putin regime.

Navalny survived an extremely dangerous poison attack which kept him in a coma for 6 weeks. I am guessing this made his health somewhat frail to begin with (disclosure: as a physician in an unrelated field, my expertise is limited). In prison he was subjected to harsh conditions such as exposure to cold and starvation. There was also a period during which Navalny refused food as a form of protest. Therefore, I think it is safe to assume that his health, including his immune system, continued to deteriorate. Under these conditions, even relatively easy to treat medical problems can quickly become life threatening. For example, he might have caught a viral infection turned bacterial pneumonia, received inadequate treatment, and died of septic shock within days. In sum, when you are killing someone in this way you cannot always choose the timing.

@@glmx778 thank you for your perspective. This is something I have been thinking as well. Surviving the nerve agent poisoning must leave severe consequences. And death due to blood clots can be a ticking bomb. Of course if Putin wanted Navalny to survive he would have been given house arrests or sent to a prison somewhere with milder climate and conditions. But the refusal to release the body and conduct an independent autopsy could indicate poisoning. Putin has had many opponents and critics killed, but the timing of this death seems quite inconvenient for him.

Amazing that Democracy Now is in step with MSM in their coverage of Navalny, while silent on Zelesky killing Gonzalo Lira is Urkanian prison. DemNow =DNC Party

"No doubt" means all other possibilities have been ruled out, which is a logical fallacy in this case. What he should be saying is : "he was probably killed", or "he was likely killed", or "he may have been killed".

@@ultralance7470 ok I genuinely just see myself as an outsider looking in with this political crap but isn’t the truth worth protecting regardless of who. I think we can all say Putin is a terrible evil person that most likely had that guy killed but to say we know without a doubt just isn’t true. I understand if we all just say it’s a forsure thing people will see how evil Putin is but I don’t think it’s the media or anyone else’s right to lie to the public for “the good” of the public. Seems the media used to be a lot better about using words like alleged but now they will lie as if they are certain, to advance their political agenda, and when I say media I mean Right and Left it’s all hogwash if you ask me.

The timing of his death is clearly by design. A month before "elections" in russia, and another 400 Navalny's get detained, so they won't be voting or protesting a month from now... But also during mayor election cycles in Europe and US, to see if/or how strong they will react. How resolved are they to support Ukraine and eventually defend the Baltics? Denmark understood this right away.

Too bad, the guy was being groomed to replace Putin, Biden just has to look for another replacement. When Biden dies who will replace him?

But the timing made the major interview of Putin vby Tucker Carlson for US consumption less relevant, it puts Putin in a worse light after the Ukrainian army retreated from Avdiivka, Navalny's wife was at teh Munich conference. Navalny was in prison anyway... It seems that his death right now would be counterproductive for the Putin regime.

Navalny was a traitor to Russia and was working for the CIA. He hadn views of a neo Nazi and said disgusting things about Georgians and Chechnyans. He was totally corrupt and wasn't even popular in Russia. Where is the evidence President Putin had him executed? There is no evidence because he died of a blood clot. President Putin is popular in Russia and is getting popularity ratings that your demented president can only dream of. President Putin is the greatest world leader today. Stop watching the lies of main stream media because Ukraine have lost the Special Military Operation and four regions in Donbas are Russian territory. That's a fact. Russia are not interested in the Baltic states. This is the same old fear mongering nonsense. I bet you're a neo con desperate for war because you want Ukraine to join NATO, which will never happen. Ukraine will never join NATO.

I don't understand stand this. There is so much information out there about who Navalny really was and just like most things, You're not going to learn any of it here. I'm commenting You in Peace and because I do truly care. If there's one thing that I Truly Hate. It's when I am being lied to and in the Manipulation of My Truths!!!
