Lake Balkhash in southeastern Kazakhstan is shrinking. For fishermen like Erbolgan Erbosynov, it's an existential threat. Fish are everything to him: his livelihood, his culture, and his tradition.
Again and again, those fishing on Lake Balkhash are coming home with nearly empty boats. One reason for the meager catches is the Snakehead fish. It’s said that somebody released the predatory fish into the lake, and since then it has been multiplying rapidly and preying on other species. Environmentalists have another obvious explanation: They say the problem lies with the lake's tributary - the Ili River. In recent years, neighboring China has diverted more and more water from the Ili to irrigate agricultural land. Will Lake Balkhash suffer the same fate as the famous Aral Sea, which has now almost completely disappeared? A report by Alexander Prokopenko.

Assalamualaikum from the US! I enjoyed this documentary very much. When I was working as a flight attendant with Norwegian Air (soon to be replaced by Norse Atlantic), I met a pilot from your country during a layover in Paris. That was the first time I met a Kazakh and he was very friendly I invited him to join me and my cabin crew in the crew room and asked him to tell us about your country. I hope one day I will be able to see your country and experience your people's hospitality. Until then, I wish you and the people of Kazakhstan prosperity and peace. ❤️ 🙏

I'm not an expert but if this guy is allowed to catch 100 tonnes (220,000 + lbs)of fish a year out of a lake and I'm sure he's not the only one, not to mention regular people fishing . Maybe that's also contributing to the lower numbers of fish.

@Business Investing With Chill Men Great idea but we are trying to save it from disappearing it will evaporate if nothing is done. This is the water that our Big horn sheep drink and tons of Wild Horses. We even use to have a Loon Festival every year but without any fish the birds quit coming. Three communities surround this beautiful lake one is a Paiute Reservation. Imagine what it will smell and look like once it starts to dry up even more the communities could be ruined also. It’s tragic that the farmers are so greedy. We begged them to move to a sprinkler system rather then irrigation and put the water saved in the lake, but they just made there crops even bigger. PLEASE HELP SAVE WALKER LAKE!

The water China are using is for Xinjiang, and that's why this won't be solved. @@jockoharpo2622 I just went and checked on Google Earth. It's there for everybody to see. To the west of the border in Kazakhstan, over which the Ili flows there is very little irrigated fields. Only a little bit by the side of the Kapshagay reservoir. While on China's side there is massive irrigation over a vast area that has all through history been a desert. You can now see it as a vast green expanse from space there (irrigated fields). So if you have to ask, it only means you have not looked to see for yourself. There is no consideration from China. China has no true friends in the world, because it is a true friend to none.

China is responsible for destroying the ecology of Lake Balkhash. It is not just the damage done to Lake Balkhash. The massive construction of dams on the Mekong and Yarlung Tsangpo rivers by the Chinese has affected the water supply of downstream countries. Will do absolutely nothing in this context-the lake drying up has nothing to do with the fish population and the invasive species is wreaking havoc on the fish population without people (over)fishing. Leaving the lake to it's own devices could make the fish population heavily lopsided as well, since people aren't actively culling the invasive species population.

When there are low water levels experienced by the lakes, they can install huge water pipes to draw the water back from the open sea or seas in order to save the lake from complete drought, with the Water technology these days that siphons the waters from the seas, it is a certainty as well that places won't be flooded as well. General practices all fields of studies are coordinated with one another and they are orderly. Hydraulic Engineers, chemist for pH tests, geodetics engineer/electrical for pipe layout and electrical installation/marine scientist for biodiversity of lakes respectively.

Is snakehead fish good to eat? The short answer is yes, northern snakehead is an excellent fish to eat. In fact, they originally ended up in that Crofton, Maryland pond because they were brought here for eating. ... Snakehead meat is firm, white, and flaky. As far as climate changes and drought - everyone needs to begin utilizing the technology of pulling water vapor from the air. What is happening across the world right now with wildfires, flooding and rising sea levels and rising temperatures in the seas and atmosphere and carbon emissions, and radioactive materials leaking into the oceans as we speak, and not forget the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster when all that oil leaked into our ocean, and all the garbage, plastics, human waste and decomposing bodies dumped into rivers that leak into the sea and chemicals of all kinds going into the sea, all man made disasters. We are killing our planet and as much as we have all these preservation societies and organizations trying to help stop most of our important issues we are not doing enough. Every person on this planet can make changes to better the earth. I bet if every person just took one day and walk outside and pick up some garbage out side your house and your neighborhood, just one day can have dramatic results. And limit your consumption if food and drinks that come in any containers that cannot be recycled. And stop throwing plastic into our oceans. They just recently found plastic from water bottles in Antarctica. Yes Antarctica which was our only continent that was free from all man made pollution, well not any more.

Yess, I think China should really learn from USA to build more Wasserbau such as Hoover Dam to contribute to Mexico's ecology in the lower Colorado River :) Also yes, I was being sarcastic. Sad to say, the truth is the United States intercepted 99% of the Colorado River's water through the Hoover Dam, barely allowing a drop of water to flow into Mexico. Within decades, the once lush environment of the Mexican delta was rapidly transformed into desert, only for the United States to grow more water-hungry crops like grapes and avocados. Then use the money that should be spent on restoration to "expose" the "irresponsible" behavior of other countries. I am not to say that China did't have any responsibility to protect environment together with neighboring country and region, in fact, I think every country should. I believe China will making more and more contributions to the common protection of the earth's ecological environment with practical actions.

china once owned the lake and territory, back in the day, before russia was able to take advantage of one of the most lopsided treaties in eastern history of civilization, prior to the soviet collapse, so it could be resentment, could be cheatin, could be neglect, or could be amnasia.
