In this week's video I set out to go fishing and find a private little camping spot. I found a private spot alright; it was really quiet.
Within the last three days I started hearing frogs at night. That marks the beginning of the sucker run, so I headed to a couple of my favorite rivers. The wet and windy weather made for poor fishing, it actually made everything a struggle.
I didn't catch any fish and finding a camping spot was almost impossible. I decided to setup camp on a piece of private hunting land. The land was super wet. The frost went out a few days ago leaving the ground saturated. Check out the video to see how the adventure unfolds.
Thanks to everyone who proved me wrong last week by reading the description of the video. It was cool to see that people are actually looking at this. Thank you for following along and I'll see you next week.

Such a frustrating series of events, yet you kept your cool 😎, and worked through the situation until resolved. In addition to that, you posted the video, all of which shows great character on your part. This is how a man handles adversity. My father was that way, and I admired him greatly. Thank you for showing us that men like you still exist in this, sometimes crazy, world. I enjoy your videos. Keep on trucking. 😉

Like you say..."be honest", glad you shared this video. Last year while going to our favorite fishing spot, wife and I ran into some snow on the forest road, wife said go for it....went about 20' before getting stuck. I was shocked as we had 4x4 or more like 6x6 (one ton dually) But highway tires with 80psi we weren't getting out. We dug by hand and used tree branches and after 40 minutes we freed ourselves. Not 3 minutes later 2 monster jeeps roll up. 🙄

Ah yep, been there buddy. That’s why I now have a massive kinectic energy rope on me at all times. Static ropes just don’t do the trick when you need to “bump” your way out of a nasty situation. “Matt’s off-road and recovery” use them religiously. Pretty amazing that a little jeep or the Moorvair can pull out rigs our size with the power of the stretchy rope!
@KennyOfAllTrades
@KennyOfAllTrades 2 жыл бұрын
I do need to invest in one. If you watch you will see the Ford did not "pull me out". The strap jerked me back about 6 inches, once my truck hit the ramps I drove up and out. I just needed that initial jerk to get on the ramps. How much did your rope cost? Not that it matters....I'm broke from fuel costing 5.89 gallon.
@downbytheriver501
@downbytheriver501 2 жыл бұрын
@@KennyOfAllTrades admittedly I am only 20 minutes into your video at this point! The strap I think cost me about 140$. A lot of upfront cost, but after you use it just once, it is a joy to use. No more having to feel the sudden impact of a static strap/chain. It’s a bungee instead. Almost used it to help pull out a 35,000 lb telehandler on the job the other day but realized that I didn’t want to break it potentially just to help someone out so I used two 18k straps instead.

Kenny, I saw a pile of junk of all sorts near by that you could have used for added traction, also if you apply "some slight" emergency brake pressure it will transfer power through the differential spider gears making both rear wheels turn at the same time, and another tactic is to ratchet strap a beefy tree limb that goes 4" to 6" inches each end beyond the tires diameter to the right rear wheel or both wheels if can, this tactic will get you unstuck...you should carry 4 ratchet straps and a chain saw, a must have of both items if you're going to do serious deep backwoods boon docking. BTW that was a great video mah-man...~No fear take chances, life is to short not to~

That's a great idea Paul. I should have aired down when I still was able to rock back and fourth. That might have been enough to get out. All in all, it was a good weekend. And every opportunity is a learning experience. Sometimes pushing our trucks to the limit is how we learn how far we can go.

Just remember to get a winch that is 1.5 times the weight of your setup. Also, how low can you air down your rear tires to with a dually? @KennyOfAllTrades That's what I'm looking at the Ford Godzilla motor... Love the idea that they engineered it to be rebuilt and with tried and true tech. Also been looking at Kodiaks/Topkicks but diesel repair cost between all brands scare me. This 4.6l ford F150 been a awesome reliable truck. Before that I had a 6.8l v10 loved that truck to. Was a die hard chevy guy till 2008 and then switched ford and haven't gone back yet. Just been really disappointed with the chevy gasser trucks. Watched to family members trucks fall apart under 200k... idk imo a truck should hit 250k-300k before needing to be replaced. The 6.4 ford diesel where not great motors. They struggled for some time with diesel. I would take your duramax any day of the week over that ford. Only 4hr left of my day before I hit the road camping. Look fwd to your next video ✌️ ☮️ 🕊

Kenny There is an old saying in the deep south"you can't run through mud with house shoes on!" The tires you run on your rig are only effective on snow. Neither buckshot or gumbo mud tires would have taken you through that swamp as heavy as your rig is! As mechanically inclined as you are, you should have know this. I like the saying, ill have to remember that one. It's all good though. A learning experience for sure. I won't know what taking the truck to 100% of its limits is if I don't push it to 125%. Im glad you enjoy the videos. Hopefully things dry up around here soon. I'm heading out Friday on a couple hundred mile trip. I'll be staying in parking lots before running through a swamp this weekend!

Definitely as another had said on here, to get a 100% nylon rope as they have that stretch that the nylon tow straps don't have near as much of. Size wise, that all depends on what unit is pulling you out and I would suggest a 1" two in one ( double braid ) rope ( because of how hard those 6 litre fords can pull ! ). I'd also suggest if you can find one or get one custom made that has about a 4 foot length of hollow sleeve that is slid over before the ends are created as one can double up the rope for a shorter rope, yes they make the velcro type sleeves but they are not as nice. Certainly does not have to be a "Yankum" "Bubba" or some other invented brand name that attaches a premium to the price, after all its the same nylon rope used in the ship yards/docking lines, Samson being one of the large nylon rope manufacturers for example. I would still say to have a good quality 3" nylon strap for length also as they are a lot more compact to store ( I'd say stay away from the polypropylene straps as they have no stretch and degrade over time ). Nylon tow ropes have been around for many many years, just that many people have not realized this until certain youtube channels have popped up in the last few years.

Thanks for the info. I'm definitely going to look at a quality nylon rope. Here in Minnesota we start pulling vehicles out of snow banks as soon as we are old enough to push Dads truck out of the driveway in the middle of the night. I have learned the importance of a quality jerk ropes compared to the logging chains we use to use. But the information and understanding of diffrent materials has changed over the years, and I haven't kept up. I was absolutely shocked when I saw the price of some ropes.....Im talking talking 350 bucks and higher...that just plan silly. What do you think a quality rope should cost? I don't need Matt's Recovery service quality....just a good rope that won't stretch out after the first few tugs.

@@KennyOfAllTrades Its a good question as to what they "should" cost, prices have gone insane on so many items in the last year. Some of the ropes on the market do have a bit of a coating on the nylon and if that helps them last longer, that is a good question. It really comes down to abusing a rope as they all will be ruined if misused and for the occasional user if there is a big price spread between a traditional nylon rope and one with a coating on it I don't see the point in spending that extra. If a rope gets muddy, its very advisable to wash it out the best one can to get rid of the grit stuck between the strands, that will help it last. Oh I know how chain and cable perform, they work fine until one tries to take a little run at it and then bad things happen !. I have not kept up with the prices as of late but I can say with fair confidence from prior comparisons that you do NOT need to pay what Matts is charging. If I have a chance I will do some digging and see if I can find the company that makes ropes in Washington state. Also if you have access to various industrial type outlets around your area see what they have access to as I discovered that was the best deal I found around here in Alberta was a company that supplies farmers and the oil patch etc.

@Charles B Thanks! I'll check out the local co-op and see what they have. Maybe the Marine shops on Lake Superior would carry quality rope? Thanks!

@@KennyOfAllTrades I won't claim to be familiar with this particular off road company but so far in my searching with price and what the rope consists of with the nylon double braid rope coated with the polyguard coating and the protection on the end loops, the price is more in line I feel. The one I was looking at was the 1" x 30 foot long for $ 155.00 and yes for a small price a storage bag can be added. I looked up the Matts rope and I see they have lowered their price a bit and yes it does come with a bag and one of the smaller soft shackles but the rope is the smaller 7/8 x 30 for a total of $ 330.00. Again I am only suggesting the 1" rope as a good all around rope without being too massive and stiff as it comes down to what weight of unit will be pulling you or if you are pulling someone else. Its hard to have the perfect rope diameter for all scenarios and length wise I would say 30 is a good workable length and looks like the eyes would be large enough to slip a 3" strap through to gain length. Its not a safe idea to use steel clevises to join two ropes, that is where those soft shackles would be nice to have assuming a strong enough one being used. Here is that 4x4 company website and the rope is a USA made product and appears to be free shipping within the USA. billet4x4.com/pro-kinetic-polyguard.htm

I drive a Ford F-150 4x4 and I had to go pull a buddy of mine out the other day and he was in a Chevy 3500 and I pulled him out with no problem but I've got lockers in the front and rear differential so I've got true 4 wheel drive so if you're going to be in these places you might want to get them installed on your truck you only had 2 wheels spinning one on the back and one on the front and if you had all,4 pulling you would have never got stuck

I would love full lockers. That makes a world of difference. I had a friend who had front and rear lockers on his Ford. He pulled a dozen houses of the lake a few years back because he was the only truck that could get through the snow. If it wasn't for him we would have had to find a track vehicle of loader to move snow.

I was looking a few years ago. The G80 limited slip from the factory is a nice on-road option, but having a full locker would be nice. I was doing research a few years ago, if I remember right I was having issues finding a company that made a daily driver locker for Chevys IFS. A solid front axel would make this my dream truck. Maybe one I'll put an air or electric locker in the rear. The problem is I'm living the American Dream, paycheck to paycheck.
