Saw this a few times (on 580 backhoes) when I was a Case tech, people would leave the transfer case engaged on pavement and turning the steering to the lock, it would take a while to happen but rental equipment will always find those people that can ruin a ball bearing with a rubber hammer. As just an observation, I was looking around your shop during various frames when it dawned on me just how much you have invested in your operation, your trucks, tools and support equipment dollar wise is a bit staggering, all mechanics of course share an investment in themselves but I just was overwhelmed by just how much you have invested, let alone your seeming endless energy and ambition to do the job right.

Seen that happen (45 years ago), with a Michigan shovel sliding down a hill, the four wheels had almost no grip and slipping/sliding. At the bottom of the hill, there was gravel. So the front wheels had suddenly full grip and a big bang in the right front hub was the result. The shaft was twisted and snapped like a match. Like your channel by the way.

If the operator doesn't own the machine, he doesn't really care about it ... sad, but that's just the truth. @davidholder3207
@davidholder3207 3 жыл бұрын
Agree Doug. You could see the amount of torque that had cracked the shaft from the twist in the spline when Warren removed it. Such a short axle would need a huge amount of torque to twist and break so that suggests metal fatigue. You'd hope John Deere will take the broken shaft and examine it to establish a reason for the failure, and supply a replacement free!

Excellent video it may of had happen to it what one of my customers did to his 8400 John Deere tractor they were pushing on a stuck tractor trailer out in the field and when it got the weight of the trailer on the front axle it tore the whole front axle up and broke the king pins also. Make sure that the king pin bearings are good most of the time they are all hammered out especially when it has the big rack of weights up front there too.

Not sure what they were using this on, but when watching the first thing I thought of when it was a hub problem was it was power hopping and hooked up. Been through quite a few muddy harvests of processing tomotoes, and its not an enjoyable thing to do, but it has to be done. If they don't want to fix it, you are more than welcomed to haul that 8000 to my place to get rid of it and I will even pay the trucking. They are great tractors and I prefer red paint.

Good diagnostic work there Warren 👍, my experience of broken drive shafts as you have there are overloading front axle, hard working conditions, tyre size mismatch, fatigue material. You’re front axle hasn’t been overloaded as it doesn’t have front linkage, you’d think that the operator could have explained when it happened and what he was doing, obviously they didn’t try the front diff lock either? Well done that man, thanks for the video as always Regards , Luke 🇬🇧🔧

Not sure if its the case with that tractor or any over there but in the UK when on the road in 2wd when braking tractor engages 4wd to give you engine braking on all wheels, I have known drive lines to shear due to fact the fronts are normally spinning slightly faster so when the 4wd comes on you get a snatching, quite often when you come to a stop and let off the brakes the front wheels will jump back as the gearbox is wound up. We had a Case mx150 once that sheared the main drive like this and lost all drive. power brakes, hydraulic steering etc on a steep hill towing a low loader with a digger on and a large chalk spreader behind as well, needless to say I think the driver needed new underwear when it finally came to a stop but thankfully didn't cause an accident. Just a thought.
