Follow my power flush procedure you can do with ordinary household items. This procedure will get the vast majority of that rust and sediment out shy of pulling the engine apart, this is you best bet!
After this is done you can safely replace your heater core HERE-

One thing I would add is before filling up for the final time, I always like to flush the system with distilled water and for sure the final fill mixture should use distilled water otherwise you are more prone to the mineral build up that got you there in the first place. This would be especially important if you have hard water or well water with lots of extras. Great Job overall on the video.

very true. tap water has more than just H2O, so it's a good idea to remove as much of that as possible.

This procedure managed to unplug my partially plugged heater core as well. Great tutorial! I would add: Do your best to keep the coolant off of the belts nearby. If it is at all prone to squeal, it may never stop squealing once it has coolant on it. I put a new one on, though, and we are back in (quiet) business.

You're a excellent teacher, follow your direction from this video lord and behold when i pull off my heater core hose there was no fluid in it, nothing were flowing through it, heater core wasn't the issue there was a block in one of those line, I back flush both hoses and heater core and blew through the heater core lord and behold heat was coming through the vents this car never idle at 145 degree 120 was it ide temp now she's heating up like a boss my thermostat opens up at 197 for ford taurus, antifreeze was green as it can be when I drain it i did redo my timing chain gasket it probabbly had something to do the broken up gasket. y car was heating up before took on this DIY job follow your direction from a tee from both of your video not a drip from any area or snap any bolt pb blaster those bolts for a week.

WOW....great series of videos. Problem I most likely need to do the heater core. Before I got the car, it was my mothers, and it sat for about 6 years, only being driven maybe 10 miles a year to get it inspected and such....So even though the car only had 45000 when it was 11 years old - it had a lot of problems that high mileage cars get. anyway - my question is If I backflush the system, and replace the overfill bottle and do a themostat for good measure since it really is easy access, If I have to wait a month or so, to get time to do the heater core - will the core in the mean time muck up the new fill tank? and need to replace it again?

On some Tauruses, 2002, 2003 if I recall, there is a "bypass" hose in the metal coolant lines near the core. Appears as if it is there to provide a means for coolant to still flow around the core instead of through it if core becomes restricted. We will pinch this hose off when flushing to get full flow through the core. Still an annual procedure, have not tried the chemical though, will try to do that next. Thanks for the great videos!!

You repeatedly reference that the coolant is warm and/or hot and the thermostat is open, but I can plainly see that the alternator isn't spinning at various points throughout the video. Did you start this job when the engine was hot and are just using the residual heat (can't imagine that would last even ten minutes while running cold hose water through the system), or are you using some other heat source? Is your hose connected to hot water? What's the water heater set to? Most water heaters don't go over 130F or so, and most thermostats don't open until at least 180....

I got a prestone backflush kit which is a plastic "tee" fitting that comes with hose clamps and a cap. You cut the 5/8" or 3/4" rubber hose which runs between the top of the water pump and the heater core and install the tee with clamps. there is a garden hose attachment so you can attach the garden hose to your heater hose. Open and remove the overflow canister cap, turn on the hose, start the engine. The rusty water/sediment will be flushed from the core and out through the overflow canister top. I also use the chemical flush once I've flushed with water, then rinse system one more time w/ clean water. Once a year keeps my heat going... Good luck!

Yes I have used those in the past on my focus I always worried about the "T" spliced into the lines though and said I would never do it again and I replaced the line with new when I rebuilt my engine even though it wasn't leaking.

Thanks for vids. So I have the smell in the car of syrup. From past experience I know its the heater core. I find no water on the passenger side of the car. I don't see any water on the ground, yet I'm "missing' water from the coolant bottle. The car blows hot air. Doesn't overheat. If the core hasn't gone bad, would a flush do it well? If I'm smelling this, is it too late? Thanks for the vids. They are great. More than willing to give this a try with all the help I've found here. I'm no mechanic, but for the costs of repairs anymore, I'm getting better at it!! Thanks again!

I had an issue removing the overflow reservoir with the rear 10mm bolt not coming out. I removed the passenger wheel and the wheel well shroud and found the bottom of the bolt spinning freely when I tried to unscrew the bolt. I tried holding it with pliers but eventually just heated it up and punched it out. No more bolt back there, but it's a plastic bottle and is attached two other places, it's not going anywhere.

Yep if I have to take the reservoir out first thing I do is spray the stud for the nut with rust penetrant. Then drain coolant etc while its soaking. Then hit it with the 3/8 impact to shock it out. If it spins I just cut it out of there and put a bolt through from the bottom and nut on top like stock, you just have to hold the bolt head from underneath while tightening.

I did this flush today on our 01 (I already changed the heater core a couple years ago and the heat is still working just fine) but was wondering if you would recommend pulling the hose underneath that goes into the radiator as part of a flush? Awesome video, Thanks for taking the time to post this. I am going to be replacing heater core ( which is totally blocked w/ rust on one of the tubes), coolant reservoir and I'm afraid I need radiator as well. When I remove the plastic drain plug, all I get are a few drops of coolant coming out, even when engine is hot. When I drain by taking off the lower radiator hose at the radiator, I was getting lots of tiny rust particles before I flushed with Prestone stuff, running clear now but still nothing from the plastic drain plug. Would you recommend still using the VC9 cleaner being that I'll have new radiator, heater core, reservoir and if so, should I VC9 flush before installing new components or after?
@FordTechMakuloco
@FordTechMakuloco 9 жыл бұрын
Terry Carroll I have seen the nastiest rusty systems on these and never had to replace the radiator. Have you unscrewed the drain then yanked on it to pop it out and have a large hole for flow? I would definitely flush with vc-9 and get the system clean as possible before installing anything new. I would wait on that radiator.

I had the same problem with my old taurus, I took a long clear hose that is small enough fit in the heater core hose, got a connectore from home depot, clamped the bypass and back flushed from the heater core connection and got the heater working again. I tried to push the hose as deep as I could and did it on both the inlet and the outlet. I suggest you do that before changing out the heater core.

Of course they do between the water fuel separator and the organic absorbtion bag in the "pit" its all taken care of. Of course that is only for accidental spills of fuel or oil into the drains or a coolant flush like there where there is no alternative beside drain out the coolant into a drain pan first then flush residual only. The filter system is definitely not a catch all.

@FordTechMakuloco

I would pull off the upper radiator hose and put the garden hose into the radiator where you pulled the upper rad hose from and flush the radiator directly to start. The radiator has the smallest passages of the cooling system.

@FordTechMakuloco
@FordTechMakuloco 8 жыл бұрын
+Imre Csoka If you have a cap on the radiator you stick the hose in there, if you don't you will have a pressurized radiator cap on the coolant bottle then you stick it in there instead besides that follow the rest of the procedure.
@CollosalTrollge
@CollosalTrollge 8 жыл бұрын
All in all i have 3 hoses on the radiator. TOP LEFT (going to thermostat) TOP RIGHT (thin overflow pipe going from top-most corner of radiator to coolant bottle) AND (big pipe as the one on LEFT SIDE, which is going from just slightly (below overflow pipe, to the engine block). Its certainly not the lower part of the radiator though, but i assume this is the Outlet pipe for the radiator ? So you reckon i stick the hose pipe in the Reservoir / coolant bottle and then detach the RIGHT side Outlet pipe FROM the radiator ? I need to try take a picture for you, if i can , would you mind? I really would love to do this and learn from you if it is okay? Many thanks.

How do you tell which engine is in your 2000 Ford Taurus SE? I'm asking because there is no real identification on the engine other than the 3.0 L. VIN number 1FAFP53U6YG110867 I'm asking because I recently purchased a Taurus and while looking for parts... well there are choices: 6 cylinders 2 3.0L Flex fuel OHV 6 cylinders S 3.0L EFI DOHC 6 cylinders U 3.0L EFI I'm guessing it's the "6 cylinders U 3.0L EFI" because there is no 2 or S in the vehicle identification Number. The car has 160,666 miles and yeah I wanted to do an overhaul on it this spring. Car runs great but did notice the rust in the coolant. That and it slowly loses coolant. "About a gallon a month" was the line I got from the previous owner.

Vulcan engines are cast iron and need extra attention to prevent rust. Maintain the coolant and 200 to 300K is not uncommon. Let rust build up and expect 100K and the head gaskets will need replacing, an $1800. dollar expense. I love the Vulcan engines. I've owned 3 of them and sell the cars at 200K miles.
