My very first board was from a pawn shop, board+boot+"binding" for $80, and by binding I mean 2 straps glued and screwed into the board. No high backs, no footing, I rode that piece for 5 years. If you can learn to board on that you can ride on a wet baby seal down the mountain.

I can tell you how Katie did it: Ankle mobility. I've had to learn this lesson too, because my ankles aren't very flexible. To put down a nice pressure on my heel edge, I do need forward set high backs.

in the 90's mid season lost a board bought someones old one, bought someone elses older bindings, they had these crazy tall high backs that dug into my calf. I took them off and Loved it, rode out the season that way. For a while I was tempted to do it again, but I always shopped for really low high backs after that anyway.

Katie is shreddin' it with or without highbacks! Wow. Great test subjects and cool to hear your comparison. I used to ride with a significant highback setting, and took off my highbacks 2 weeks back to try things out. I have a relatively stiff boot and a normal width board, so maybe the effects were not as significant as yours on your wide board and your sick carving!! :) Great vid!

Thanks for the video on no-back bindings! Personally, I love it. Been riding Switchback bindings without the highbacks for years and haven't looked back. I can hold a nice heelside carve just fine too. I do use a stiffer boot though. My reasons for going without highbacks is it's easier/quicker for me to get into them, it's just another piece of equipment that I don't need, more playful feel to my riding and I feel that it makes you ride a little better forcing one to concentrate on technique and strength. With all that being said though, maybe I'll dust off the highbacks I have for these bindings, slap 'em back on and go for some turns to see how different they are after all these years - should be a fun test!

Not used highbacks for a few years now and for me it works really well. I'd say that you should use bindings that are designed to be ridden without them; they are available. Depending upon the heel cup design a normal binding may not hold the back of your boot properly, in which case it'll be an awful experience with the heel of your boot lifting on every toe turn. Also, you must remember to re-centre your boot to the board if you're just ditching the highback from a standard binding; bindings like Switchbacks have an insert which properly grips and positions the boot on the baseplate, so they're the ones I use. Being based in the UK, I do lots of snow dome riding and in my experience the removal of the highback really frees the feet, ankles and knees to work in a much more fluid manner, which I seem to prefer. To each their own, though!

I ride with a guy that grew up riding in Europe and New Zealand and he never rides with highbacks. He is an amazing rider and instructor. He says that without highbacks he has learned to better utilize, fine tune, and ultimately correct lower body movements (ankle, knee, and hip) that cause adverse board performance. Most of these issues aren't always apparent or are masked when using highbacks. I wouldn't recommend riding a wide Donek without highbacks, but I can see the advantages on an average width snowboard.

During the japanese invasion of 1994/95 at Cardrona halfpipe NZ, there was one japanese guy who rode pipe all day without highbacks, and rode well too. Me and my buddies who were 16-17 at the time were very impressionable to their styles and ways (getting the baggiest pants we could find) gave backless bindings a try. It was insane landing in the pipe, that guy must've developed muscles on the front of his shins like popeye's arms. I also remember having to buy the aftermarket 'lo-backs' for the burton freestyle bindings, as they came with mid size backs, which would probably still be smaller by todays standard.

Feel like I'm resurecting the dead with this post but as someone thats been training with no highbacks and stiff boots for years now. It teaches a more effective and balanced heel edge initiation and control with down weighting and peddleing/foot steering to create the pressure under the heel and not over the snow which is what happens when 90% of people crank on a highback. Katie said it herself, you have to get creative, you dont have a lever or same level of support any more. I still deep carve to this day on grromers without them but it also helps with mobility in the park and when riding powder it is literally surfing.

The boot does fit about a cm further back without the highbacks. The biggest thing is just nothing there to help drive pressure into the edge. (Especially for me with the extra wide board where I need that leverage from the highbacks even more IMO).

Definitly really hard on a super wide board i guess...but on a normal board its pretty easy after a few runs, but beware when stopping you can catch the toe edge. I think its very good training beacuse you have to ride perfect to make it work. I had a friend Rasmus who rode really soft boots, no highbacks and Doughboy/Grocer like a champ, fast in the trees and even doing 540s so, also Mike Ranquet never uses highbacks ive heard.

I always remember Mike R's vid parts being annoying to me because they cut so many of his landings as soon as his board touched the snow... Last year after I made this video (and yup that's true on his no highbacks), I rewatched one of his parts, and it looked like almost every trick that he landed on his heels, we're the ones they cut early and didn't show him riding away. I'm pretty sure it was cuz of the no highbacks!

If you ride with very stiff boots and very little forward lean I suspect many would barely notice the removal of their highback. If you run softer boots or a ton of forward lean then it's going to feel VERY strange to lose that support.

I’ve been riding with no high back since my examiner got us to take them off during our course around 7 years ago. I haven’t looked back and ride like that even in the backcountry. Give it a try, it’s fun!

Hmm... This is really interesting to me. Highbacks with a lot of forward lean means you can keep the board under you better right? Meaning, while carving heel-side, if you have little to no forward lean on your highbacks, due to limitations of human anatomy and the inability to raise the front of your feet towards your shin very much, the rider has to lean back more risking slipping out. So either she just has greater range of motion in her ankles than most or her much lighter body weight means her threshold of washing out is more forgiving, or perhaps some combination of both. I don't know. Correct me if I'm wrong... just a thought.
@Sprinkles-BtE
@Sprinkles-BtE 6 жыл бұрын
Solid theory. The reason this video sparked my curiosity is just recently, I found out that I ride much better without any forward lean and I think it has a lot to do with my downhill longboarding past. While the movements don't transfer 100%, I'm very used to steering a board downhill with just the friction of my shoe against the grip tape and weight distribution. As soon as I zeroed out my highbacks, it was like a dog unleashed and my maneuverability jumped up dramatically. What she does at 2:26 is exactly the first thing you'll notice when your highbacks are out of the way: Freedom to be extremely squirrelly which helps tremendously for riding between the trees on single tracks when the snow is heavy and tracked out between the runs (typical Tahoe "wet-cement" snow conditions). Of course, big & wide powerful carves aren't as easy to do without any forward-lean but I was never good at that anyway. ;) Now I want to try getting rid of my highbacks entirely because of this video.

When you practice more than one board sport you are more likely to be able to adapt to different conditions because you are used to different body movements and positions and you have muscle memory for the different activities you do. you are more open to experiment on spot and fit into unconventional conditions. There are people who surf more frequently than they do snowboarding so they might tend to stick to surfing body movement on snow and maybe use the opportunity to practice for surfing more and are not really interested in doing really really good carves :) . I seen many videos on KZfaq where they suggest that if you want to start surfing you can start practicing with the body movement on a skateboard.

I really don't think so... Like say a FS 360 off the heels... You want a nice clean arc off of your heelside edge to create the pop off of the take off... I love riding with no high backs, I reckon if you skate you’ll love it, however if you really depend on bombing fast, carving, and don’t care about tricks you’ll want to keep your high backs on

I´ve Been riding with no highbacks for several seasons now, acutally since I read this article from Mike Ranquet, snowboarding.transworld.net/uncategorized/the-theory-of-no-highbacks-by-mike-ranquet/. Yes, it sure does require a different technique and muscle power, also a stiff stable boot is preferable. I currently ride with 32 TM-Two and they give plenty support. I like the looser and surfier feel and also that I have to put in more work and really commit to each turn. It certainly has improved my riding to the better.
