Janey Tini Astle grew up in Pukekohe at a time where there was racial segregation. The 81-year-old said it wasn’t until she was older and learnt about America’s own history of segregation that she realised it was the same experience. Her account is part of a new book that sheds light on Pukekohe’s dark past.

This was one of the best but saddest New Zealand history books I have come across. Bartholomew has shed light on a dark chapter of Pukekohe history that has been swept under the rug.

2:00 pukekohe Maori marae was next to pukekohe hill school, the area is a pakeha area, the marae was burnt to the ground, I ts not clear to me why and by whom, but others may know, there was also a school in pukekohe for only Maori long ago in the 50s, because pakeha didn't want to associate with Maori,

William - Some people from Pukekohe are racist, but in my experience - most are not. Most are honest, hardworking people who strive for equality. But racism still exists in Pukekohe (like many other places) and it is important to raise awareness of it so people can call it out when they see it.

I drove my car through Pukekohe North years ago and two cars cornered me in, big Maori guy got out (my windows were down) and punched me in the face for no reason other than being a Pakeha.

1:44. The darkside is known as the reservation, I've herd the pakeha refer to it as such, the dark side is where all the Maori live , and most are gangs, this is one big reason Maori are treated badly by most pukekohe pakeha, pakeha see them in a bad light, probably because of the decades of thefts, assaults etc the list goes on, I've personally have had my blood spilt just for my colour in this town, unprovoked attacks, from both pakeha and Maori, I have unfinished business in pukekohe, and I am much more than formidable

The bad treatment from pakeha started well before the gangs formed. After watching no maori allowed i understand why they did form there. Thats what happens when you segregate people and treat them like dirt
