Getting a mold cavity to fill properly requires doing several things right. The cavity must be correctly positioned in space and it must be properly sprued and vented. This allows the resin to flow into the cavity, rise up and fill it without trapping pockets of air.

I ordered some rubber and resin today for the first time because I finally have a project need to duplicate a simple part. Fingers crossed that having watched all your videos will help it not be a colossal failure in the minimum number of attempts.

Small detail I noticed while filling the star the second time you can see a small air pocket get stuck and bubble out (around 6:38). I found that really interesting to see and watch. It gave me a better view on why I sometimes get bubbles close to my pour spouts.

Perhaps it would have been more ideal to connect the pour spout closer to the base of the arm which would be a longer spout, providing more head pressure. Then, add a third vent to the tip of the arm (basically in the same place as the pour spout he made)

wish you made this video last year, that's exactly what happened to my first big project. The sprue was way too small and it cured with only maybe 10% of the mold full. Thank you so much for continuing to make excellent videos.

Loved watching the resin cure through the "window". Though "cutting in" vents gives me flashbacks of ruining resin/rubber/sculptures at the same time. As always thank you

this is such a good idea to show how a mold fills up! I always try to imagine what happens inside a silicone mold, but it is very difficult. This made it a lot easier!

Not much would happen. A small amount of air would rise out of the sprue as the resin dripped in. You would see bubbles in the funnel. But soon the resin would gel, and that would be the end of that.

I loved watching the mold get filled. I’ve always had trouble visualizing what was actually going on and how the sprews would work in the mold. This answered all my questions about that! 😄

This was fantastic to watch. At 5:30 I was thinking that if you were to add some sort of suction from the other two vents would help the flow/fill, but clearly a larger funnel proved to be a lot simpler.

Hi Robert, thanks for making these! It seems like larger vents means more post processing and a loss of surface quality at the point it joins the part. Is it possible make a small hole and stretch it open with something like a funnels tip or nasal speculum during filling? If the mold snaps back to its original shape before the resin sets and becomes a tiny hole, it seems like it would reduce clean up and give you more of the original shape.

You always have to balance the time between fussing with the pouring process and cleaning the casting. See which method is faster for you and then go with that one.

Robert, I'm so happy I found your channel. I've been really stressed about the final mold of a project I've been working on for many months. This mold is the most complicated and I've just felt too intimidated and confused to make it yet. I'm learning so many good little tips watching your videos. I'm also wondering though if you offer any mold making consultations. There are quite a few ways I could approach this one and I'm indecisive so some expert input would be very helpful!

Just a quick point, if mixing polyester resin Dont put catalyst in first!. Especially when using barrels the accelerator settles, so when the tap opens the cobalt hits the catalyst and explodes. This is why you should always spin the barrels/ tubs.

Bob, pretty neat! I like the see through pour. Like you said, you can see how it sets up. A question that begs an answer, why couldn’t you lay the mold down with the mold opening up and pour into the opening? Best regards, Richard

I would love to see you molding and casting action figure parts. Some of the parts, like a bicep, have a mushroom shaped through hole that I'm guessing would require a water soluble wax core that's insert molded. Plus that part looks like it would be a multi part mold due to the parting lines. Also some action figures have disks inside their shoulders that are trapped, not sure if this was insert molded or not. If there is anything I need to do on my part to make this happen, please let me know!

I was wondering, wouldn't it be much nicer to use blades made for lino cutting for the vents? It seems that with the exacto knife you end up removing allot of rubber, which could make post processing more of an issue if you dont pay attention to the original shape... Just an amateur myself, but its what came to mind!

I find round engraving tools to be very difficult to push through silicone rubber. But you might have a better result than I did. And if so, it would work great.

I can’t personally recommend any because I haven’t used them. What is more important than the brand is whether to use a platinum or tin based rubber and the Shore number. 10 is very soft and flexible, 60 hard and stiff.

I haven't spent my entire career casting resin parts, but I've done my more than my fair share over the years. I'm really confused why you chose to do this part the way you did. There was no need for any channels in the mold at all. All you had to do was lay the mold down and fill it up with resin until the resin topped off. A light brushing of resin on the plexiglass and all you had to do was lay the plexi glass down and put a small weight on it. I doubt I would have even done that. Just fill the mold and leave it. The back could be sanded smooth after curing.

If I use a chunky that had accelerator used, in a new mold (that has no accelerator) will the new mold be accelerated or does the accelerator become ineffective once the original rubber cures?
@RobertTolone
@RobertTolone 11 ай бұрын
The accelerator would be bound up in the molecules of the chunks and have no effect on the new mold.

The one thing I'm wondering is, why not put the pour spout in the middle? Is it less likely to get air bubbles when you fill from the side and it flows outward?
@RobertTolone
@RobertTolone 11 ай бұрын
Yes, putting it in the middle would have worked too. The reason I used the side entrance was so that the funnel would be lower down so the mold would be shorter and use less rubber.
