1.a. The word strange means ‘different’.
b. By using the word ‘uniform' the poet is talking about different skin colours and different traditions and cultural attires.
c. ‘A single body breathes' here means a living and breathing human being not different from ourselves.
2. a. The lines here is talking about the lines caused by working and doing hard manual labour.
b. In these lines, we find and read hard work just like we do in our lands.
c. Their labour is not different from ours because we all work to survive and to eat and live.
3.a. Take arms in this stanza means practice violence.
b. We defile our land by destroying the very work of nature. We outrage the air by polluting it with harmful gasses that kill humans and all other creations.
c. “Hells of fire and dust" is a metaphorical explanation of our actions of hatred during war and violence.
B.
1. The moral of the poem ‘No Men are Foreign’ is that we are all equally loved by nature and we need to preserve and protect her by living in peace and harmony or else we will only be killing ourselves. The poet James Kirkup is a British poet who had travelled in different parts of European countries, America and the Far East. He had lived in Japan for more than thirty years and realised that no men are foreign. We all love peace and harmony. Though we live under different geographical locations, traditional norms and cultural differences, deep within we all are one.
The poem spreads the message of peace, love and universal brotherhood.
2. Yes, it is an undeniable fact that all humans are equal and same. Though we have different cultures, traditions, countries, colour or creed we all belong to the same human race. The earth is our home and we all live in this global village. We are all threatened by the same fear of survival. We all love peace and hate war. We all feel pain, strength and love.
When we dispossess,condemn or betray another human being we are only hating our own brother. By disturbing the natural environment with war, violence and hatred we are disturbing the innocence of the very air that we breathe.
3. The poet explains that beneath different kinds of clothing there is a similar heart that beats, a common life that we all can recognise and understand. We all live under the mercy of nature that provides us with sun, water, air, different seasons and crops to harvest. We all work to survive and see the beauty of this world.
The differences are created by the people who try to spread hatred. Calling people by different race, colour, country and religion, we humans create our own walls, while on the other hand, God made us all in his image and nature provides us all without being partial to any section of human race.
4. People who spread hatred and have selfish motives are the ones who tell us to hate our own brothers.
They do so to disturb the peace and harmony that exists among people.
We lose by dispossessing, betraying and condemning another human being because by doing so we are rejecting our own brother.
According to the poet, even the strongest can be won over by love, because love is more powerful than strength.
