Sawing with Sandy

Жыл бұрын

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy sawing lumber. There are days however when frustration kicks in and I'm about ready to hang up my hat. Today however is not that day as I tackle two small things that are a source of my frustration at my sawmill. If you saw with a Woodland Mills sawmill on a trailer you may have experienced the dreaded clunk of the log stop or log clamp falling out of their mounts as they hit the ground. This has happened one too many times for me and today I"m finally doing something about it. I've got the old arc welder out hoping to shed some light on the situation and make things more comfortable for me out at the sawmill. Although these "fixes" are somewhat of a trial and error, I'm hoping I come out with a good addition to my sawmill. You can be the judge of that one though haha. Glad you're all here for today's adventure, let's see how we make out. Here we go!

On second thought, I"ll likely grind off the weld I put on the log stops and put the weld on the side of the log stop to allow for a flat surface where the lumber will sit. Alternatively I may end up just rotating the log stop around so the weld faces to the side or back. See how it goes.

I always have the angled side facing the log anyway, makes the log easier to roll when using the can't,.and if it does ride up a bit because it isn't straight, the angle makes it ride down instead of OVER the stop....if you add more holes for measurements, maybe do them in the other face, 90° from the holes now, so you don't weaken the stop....

I was yelling at my screen "No Sandy, drill the holes on the sides and weld on the back" The bolt heads and weld will stop your log stop from holding the wood square! Did we start that project after finishing a 6 pack?

Why not put a small tack weld (only 1/16” tall would do) on the corner of the stop in line with the t bolt so as you crack it loose and it slides down, the tack sticks out and catches on the bolt? Unless there is not enough room in the sleeved tube.

No Maple Syrup this year Sandy! I did some but it wasn't a great year was all small quantities picking up sap this year! I was home to my Mother's and stayed three months and when I got back we had a lot of snow I usually just cover my little sled and it is lost under the snow somewhere so we did everything with snow shoes going to boil 150 + litre's this Monday.

Ya know when the snow finally melts we wont recognize your place LOL . I to have used nails and bolts for pins when I didn't have cotter pins available, You can lay your welding rods on a tray on top of your wood heater to warm them up before welding in the winter time done that before and if your rods are in the metal container just set that on the wood heater too, couldn't hurt! Good idea there Sandy. I was thinking using hitch pins for the log stops would work as well. I purchased a variety of hitch pins from Amazon for under $20 USD and they have come in very handy. If you don't want to do that perhaps fasten a couple zip ties around the bolts and attach them to the frame (somehow, haha) so you won't lose the bolts. Have a Happy Easter Sunday. Cheers!

Yet again another great vid Sandy I have noticed a difference between the Canadian and the UK Mills the holes the log stops go into have two additional bolts on the back one top and one bottom so you can adjust the angle of the log stop to get them perfectly upright I do have the HM126 so that might be the reason but I found when I started cutting Trapeziums a quick adjust squared everything up Also agree with the other comments of turning the angled stops the other way round I mill some large diameter logs taller than the stops and they don't get caught up when you turn them if the 45 is towards them
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy Жыл бұрын
The Canadian sawmills also have those adjustment holes. I just haven't had to use them fortunately as the log stops were perpendicular to the log bunks. The option to make those small adjustments are nice though for sure.

The short log stops that came with my mill had a piece of keystock welded to them to keep them from falling through the mount. Not sure why they didn't do that to the longer ones also. I will be adding a bolt to the bottom of my clamp, though. That thing can be frustrating if it falls at an inopportune time. I ordered the new scale marker that you had in a previous video. That should be here soon. I've really picked up a lot of good tips from you over the time I've been watching. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Sandy, I yelled and screamed at you but I guess you didn't hear me! You welded the bead on the wrong side of the log stop. I see under your pinned comment you figured it out. Hey, we both know you wanted to play with the grander, as well as the welder. One other thing, if you put a bolt through the log stop to hold it at a specified height, do you still need to clamp it? When you push the log against it, I don't see it going anywhere. Great solution with the nail thru the log clamp!
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy Жыл бұрын
hahah I had a second look when I was posting the video this morning and realized that I should probably move the weld but in the meantime I"ll try it out and just turn the log stop 90 degrees if I need to. I don't think I"ll need to clamp the log stop anymore if the bolt goes through which will be nice actually

Instead of just a spot weld, take an old nut and weld it on. The spot weld is rounded and will jam into the sleeve tube if you just let it drop sometime. And, it will be a real pain to drive it out from the bottom. Ask me how I figured that out.

Nice simple fix. I don't really see the need in bending both ends of the nails over like that though. As long as the nails have a big enough head on them, that end isn't going anywhere. Adding a slight bend to the other end would keep it in place and allow you to remove them should you need to with much less fiddling about. Also, wouldn't the welds just add to the gripping ability for the log stops? Good vid again. Thanks.
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy Жыл бұрын
All good points Joe. Only trouble with the weld placement is if I want the lumber to sit flat against the log stop . I'd have to rotate the log stop around in that case likely
