I just installed a DB Killer on my 1998 Porsche Boxster 986 and man what a difference! That drone that you've heard about (or know about) around the 2000-3000 RPM range has been totally eliminated.
They measure 48mm x 140mm x 26mm
I bought them off of Amazon for $8.26 each! Here's a link:

Thanks for the video. After watching your original video on the exhaust removal and install of the Manzo exhaust, I’ve been looking into the different exhaust options and the one common complaint, even with the expensive aftermarket exhausts is the dreaded drone. I finally decided to go the route of an exhaust bypass mod (aka Pedro Exhaust Mod). From what I’ve read, this gives the car that nice louder and throatier exhaust note without the drone. I picked up an OEM exhaust from someone parting out their Boxster and found a gent who is a metal worker/welder that’s doing the mod for me. Can’t wait till it’s done so that can I do the exhaust swap and test it out!

I looked into all the various mods out there and went with the Pedro mod too. I bought a stock muffler off eBay, printed the instructions off the internet and took it to my local muffler shop who did the mod for $88. Then I swapped out my stock exhaust and sold it on Craigslist to a guy who planned to do the same thing I did. A case of musical mufflers. Literally.

The Organized Garage Wow! That is such a steal on the mod work...man, prices in my neck woods are definitely not that good! Just curious, did they use stainless steel pipe? What size diameter did you settle on? The guy doing the metal work for me has ordered 1 1/2” stainless for the mod.

Thanks for the this. I put a couple of dB Killers in my Toyosports exhaust (exact clone of the one you feature here) and the drone was cancelled. I've noticed no drop in performance, in fact if anything the car has a little more torque below 2300 RPM than it had without the dB Killers. No EML lights. And it still sounds superb above 3500 RPM. Put some Loctite on the Allen bolts to make sure they stay in place.

Hi Chris. Seconded re the Top gear (UK) back box. Currently a £450 + fitting cost mistake on my 2003 986! Drone as soon as the accelerator pedal is depressed, even gently, is just too much. I haven't used the car since driving it back from the garage. The old, rusted original back box was so much better than this. Unfortunately (with hindsight) I told the garage to bin it... I've just bought a couple of these baffles, and am having fun(!) trying to get a hex key into the inaccessible space to secure them, but just wanted to ask, did you leave the small caps fitted inside the perforated tubes, or remove them completely? Would be grateful if you could reply and let me know when you see this. Cheers, Ian

@@ianholden3100 Hi Ian, you shouldn't regret it once these baffles are in place. I left the caps in the perforated tube. I actually took the tail pipe off to fit the baffles, then put the tail pipe back on. Not sure if that's possible with the 986 fitting though mate. A year on and I actually only have one baffle in the left hand side, it still pretty much eliminates the drone totally. Hope you get it sorted, just in time for some spring time blasts! Cheers.

The reason you have drone is because you have zero cross over pipe in your muffler portion of the system. You need either an X pipe ir something to balance the exhaust pulses. Also, the huge restriction is in the mid pipe with the secondary cats and replacing that with a non-cat resonated section would erase done completely - no need for a db killer to further ruin the already terrible and chocked exhaust system!

I want to try a db killer. My exhaust muffler has one way straight through (it was supposed to have a flap) and one way muffled and it has drone. I can use a db killler in the straight through way, anyway, it will be custom made from a 3”/2” adapter and a 2” pipe with holes and the 3” end will be cut at an angle so it should look ok. However, the best option is a property calibrated J pipe, it can eliminate the drone

@@simonfeld7641 no I didn't end up buying the baffle. The only time that my exhaust would really "drone" is using 6th gear on the highway. Now I'm looking for another first gen base model because I just want the 5-speed... and I'm going to go after the exhaust primarily first thing. Just removing the snorkel from the intake will give you more exhaust note. Just adding a BMC air filter will greatly add performance and sound. My honest review about the borla Cat-Back is it is an awesome exhaust in every category. It isn't too loud, it's quality stuff. If you have your snorkel removed, high flow intake installed, and cat back exhaust?! -Once you push the car into high revs the exhaust note will come alive!! I mean it is addicting and infectious. The only time the borla Cat-Back is loud per se is when you are absolutely pushing the motor. Excellent everyday use exhaust. Highly recommended. 👍

Mine sounded just fine until they blew out ! There's just too much exhaust back pressure - and those baffles definitely affect power output.

Used a pair of generic motorcycle exhaust baffles that were a nice, snug fit, then made a series of radial holes to ease exhaust flow. Even bondo'ed them in.@@HelpMeDIY

I installed this (got rid of the little disks inside too) and it eliminated the drone but every time I let of the throttle it makes a really weird chattering sound. Have you experienced this?
@HelpMeDIY
@HelpMeDIY 3 жыл бұрын
+Squidward Tortellini I sometimes on startup have a little bit of what I would call clattering, but I think the chain tensioner needs to be replaced. If your issue is really with the inserts they will probably fix themselves after a while by getting right in there.

Hey, I have the same problem! It's like a really fast chatter when you let off throttle or between gears, almost a squeal sound it's so fast. Did you figure out how to get rid of it? I've tried everything and I'm at my wit's end. This is my last thing to try before I give up on this muffler: www.scramblerforum.com/threads/db-killer-squeak.36775/
@squidwardtortellini4356
@squidwardtortellini4356 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeffoa2319 I found that when you leave the little disks inside the inserts, it doesn’t eliminate the chatter completely but it does a pretty good job at quieting it down at least so it's not so bad. I've found it to be a pretty good improvement.
@jeffoa2319
@jeffoa2319 3 жыл бұрын
@@squidwardtortellini4356 Huh, I was reading in the link I sent you that the chatter isn't any looseness or anything, it's the exhaust pulses pinging or whistling over the geometry of the dB killer. I saw in the link too that the guy used those little steel pot scrubbers to diffuse some of the laminar air coming through the insert. Might try what you've said and what he said too! Did you set your dB killers in the exhaust pipe with JB weld, or just the little screw?

Sure does and you can feel a reduction in performance..Just installed a catback system to replace the leaky stock exhaust. Sounds great but getting the dreaded drone. Fitted a pair and was afraid to overtighten as constructed from thin alumium. Blew one out of the back when overtaking at speed. They do cut the drone considerably but I dont like reducing the outlet to 1" and the loss of performance so removed them for now. I will see if I can get used to the drone.
