If you want a lore reason why taking play for set pieces off helps you score more set piece goals, say it's because teams now notice you aren't diving or kicking the ball off them for throws/corners as often so they don't feel the need to use one if there few practice sessions on defending set pieces. I've been away from FM for about 8 years due to having kids etc and recently thought I'd have a look at it again and I found your Non-League to Legand 21 playlist and after watching 1 episode you conviced me I needed to try it myself. I've no idea what I'm doing but my closest club is Fylde so that helps alot (wage budget was 17k). Just want to say thanks for getting me back into a great game and thanks for the guides you have done which has helped me loads.

I did an unemployed start and found myself at Kidderminster, Sam Austin, who bags twice here, was one of 3 survivors in the 2nd season, class in any position I played him. Kev, the shadow striker role is op this year and I'm sure one of your players could pull it off in your system. Loving the series fella.

The set piece thing is classic reverse psychology Kev. By telling them not to play for them, you've lifted the pressure of expectaton, thus, they score more from them. Tactical and psychological genius indeed!

If you want your attackers in behind consider also putting on hit early crosses. Quite often those go more behind the defense rather then horizontal and can also come more from the center of midfield. At least that is what it did in previous FM's

I tried playing the same formation as you and got the same inconsistent results, 4-4-2 classic is the best way to go in these non league scenarios!!!

I made a save with Blyth, first season i finished 7th and lost the playoffs, second season i finished 2nd on 110!!! points behind Kidderminster on 114 and i lost the playoffs... i only conceded 23 goals the whole season

One thing you can try is to use 'regroup' - it might help you defensively especially as you are playing a high tempo.

Y'know, your series reminded me I had a Braintree save started on FM21 (Braintree just sounded like a fun name 😅) , so I continued it now... and currently in playoff places, and with a proper 30+ goal striker 😅 First ever semi-pro team I'm managing, and it's a bit of a different experience, and I swear I'd love it if opposing goalkeepers didn't have about an assist every other game, but if you just watch and learn to accept the nonsense, it's a fun time! Will hold off my final judgment until the season ends and I have to see who to sign, and rebuild the team, I feel like that's the most challenging part of a save like this, but I've been enjoying it so far!

Kev, if you want balls in for the attackers to chase, why don't you hit early crosses? Pass into space could also work but it will mean giving the ball away a bit more

What you need Kev is a striker with finishing of 3-5 like Hernandez (I think his name was) off of bourne in the usa

It really feels like dropping the tempo even a tick would help a ton. Your players can pass well enough they don’t need to be forcing it with the quick tempo. It would probably help with possession and certainly help with the fitness issues.

A massive thing that I think will help defensively is using full backs instead of wing backs. They have more defensive responsibility but can still offer that supper if you need it!

Instead of focussing on star rating, try finding the perfect striker you need by filtering on the stats that fill the gap. Maybe at least 9/10’s in: - Speed - Acceleration - Off the ball - Composure - Finishing - Natural fitness Then maybe 7/8’s (for this level) in: - Stamina - Work Rate - Technique - Determination - Dribbling If you find just one player that meets these, through the chequebook at them. You may not be able to sign someone with these stats but there could be a loan option out there. They could be the 25+ goals you need to progress.

Ah sorry I must’ve misunderstood Kev! If you know the stats because your scouts previously scouted them, you still can’t sign them unless they actually recommend them at any point? As part of the rules, can you not tell scouts to look for players in a certain position with certain qualities?

I seem to recall the actual team I follow RL (Cheltenham Town, now League 1 but I started when they were non-league) managing to score in the first few minutes and by 3-1 down within 10-12 minutes one time so trailing after 16 isn't TERRIBLE...

Fm22 vanarama North/South - this year I'm noticing that my fullbacks lose EVERY defensive header! Having to play four centre halves to counter it myself! Enjoying this year's nl to legend so far Kev.

"Play for set piece" if its on it never worked for me. But the moment you turn it off -- 12 goals in 15 games from set pieces. This shit has been happening to me since FM 16-17.

During the match: "I need to start being harder on the players." After the loss: "I'm proud of your efforts." I do think you should stop listening to your assman for the team talks to be honest, feels like he's very much "give them a pat on the head for their efforts" no matter the result.

Everything I've read about this game is they've tweaked the realism so that part time players really struggle playing a high intense style with a lot of team orders. Sure you'll prove me wrong but I'd say strip that back. Drop the intensity so players aren't so knackered! And think of real life, players at that level can't keep intese football up.
