let's talk about caring for a Carbon steel marshalltown trowel.
also we will take a no nonsense look at soaking your plastering tools and as an added bonus we will look at putting a bent trowel *back into shape.
*note: if you are very unlucky you could pop a rivet doing this but the trowel is knackered anyway so in my opinion it's worth the risk.

Oh I forgot to mention, if you hit the spine to hard and you are very unlucky there's a chance you could pop a rivet on the trowel (it's knackered anyway so in my opinion it's worth the risk just to get another month or so out of it).

Great Chanel...I used to soak mine in white vinegar overnight & it would be like brand new the next day...now I am like you, they just get thrown in the bag till next job

Great channel keep up the great content. I just have a stainless steel perma, chuck it into a bucket of water and forget about it 😂. Plus I don’t do enough plastering so by time I come to use a carbon again it will look like it was found on the titanic

Great video, I learned alot.. but the plaster does corrode the carbon over time so clean is for longevity. Also experienced the rain water affect on my trowel by accident last week.. it's true!!!

Merry Christmas pal, you would hate me!!!! Lol. I wet and dry my trowels practically every work day, buckets and hand board as soaked when ever i am on a job more than 1 day... I can't help it, its just The way i am wired... I have a clean monogrammed hoodie in the van for when i go quoting and the van is washed every week.... I am solely domestic and my cleanliness gets me alot of work... 😁

Fair play to you Si, nothing wrong with being clean, I've been asked a few times by young lads when they should start soaking their trowel so thought I'd just address it to clear up any confusion with lads thinking they have to do it. My dad used to make me an my brother wear different overalls to sit in the front of his immaculate van. Sunday was cleaning day, every tool out, van hoovered washed and polished every week. When I was on ppm² I was bashing out 100m² a day and the lads that worked for me were flat out grafting all day so we basically cut out anything that wasn't absolutely necessary to productivity... my dad still moans at me when he sees the van.🤣 P.s. the jobs are always left spotless but there's only one thing that's getting polished at the weekend an it ain't the trowel 🤣🤣

@@Onthetrowel yes, airguns is a passion of mine, av got a hw97 in 22 and a hw99s in 177, there stored away thanks to Jimmy krankies new laws in Scotland, am to busy plastering to get out anyway 😅, but I'll get back to it in time, must say your vids are much better than most of the plastering videos around on KZfaq 👍

Sod all that cleaning ya tools malarkey all the time! 😂 the main skimming trowel does get kept in good order but everyone I’ve came across with immaculate tools used to spend more time worrying about how clean they’re tools where instead of what was on the wall!

Baby oil in garden spray bottle stops rust. What I do. its just mineral oil. No problem with your skin or unpleasant like WD 40 or other toxic oil. Or leave as you say and clean off rust. Great advice though...

Good video mate wat I do if trowel starts go the wrong way get an old trowel an tap your trowel on the spine up an down tap it where the spine an trowel blade meet up n down both sides an it will come bk right I do it on new trowels to give it the proper shape

Cheers pat, yes mate, that's how my dad used to do it, my way seems a bit more brutal but it's fast 🤣 No on a serious note though, I've noticed in the past that when you do that it pushes the softer metal from the spine into the blade so yes it does push the blade out and correct the shape but it also puts the rivets under stress. I've popped more rivets doing it this way than I have by giving the spine a tap with a hammer. To be honest I probably should of shown both ways in hindsight. But it's the same with everything plastering, there's always another way to do it and if you cover all the ways then the videos will be 2 hours long 🤣 Anyway, thanks for the support on the channel and hope you had a lovely Christmas mate

i think soaking my nela in vinegar and bi carb made it weaker. its about a year old and got significant cracks near the spine

Yeah do not consider a stainless steel toll which does not rust she does not rust if if I could turn the clock back in my plastic I would buy one of them

I soak mine annually in a bucket then just clean it off with whatever water all year around it just gathered build up but I've been doing it differently this year I have a spray bottle always clean water. So if you want no build up on the back of your trowel just spray it down with fresh water until water runs clear no soaking simple and a shiny trowel everyday if that makes you feel better. I do personally my work mate don't give a rat's ass he's trowel looks like it as been at the bottom of the ocean for 50 year's total preference 😂

@@Onthetrowel Yes just like cooking lard. Being in the State Works Department in Brisbane Queensland Australia. The foreman of the plastering gang was always on the eye.

Hi Jase, it's a 14" x 4" mate. Less pressure on the wrist... it's all I use these days mate. Hung the 18" up 🤣

Why do you favour the carbon steel trowel when a stainless steel trowel will never rust? Is there much of a difference?

They feel abit different when you use them. To be fair I have stainless trowels aswell. I swap back and forth between them every now an then. After a few decades of plastering you have to find ways to keep it interesting. 🤣 P.s the rust isn't a problem. People go on about it but if you're using it all the time then you never notice it or need to worry about it

@@Onthetrowel thank you for the reply! I'm fairly new to plastering so I just follow the lead set by the fella I work with and he said go stainless so that's what I got. I also use an ox Flexi trowel. Do you use anything like that? Thank you for the videos.

No problem mate it's a pleasure. Think of it like this, plaster goes on and you smooth it out flat with a rigid trowel, if the trowel is flexible how can it get it flat. Yes the get it lovely and smooth but if there's any bumps in the walls then they won't get it flat. I personally see the benefits for a plasterer when he comes to polish but I wouldn't recommend one for anyone that us still learning. Not trying to be a spoilt sport but I've had problems with them myself in the past so I know where the pitfalls are

Great video but No trowel is useless when is bends the wrong way, theres an easy way to bend it back to the right shape without smacking the spine with a hammer, doing it like that you'll probably pop a rivet then it really is fucked

I would love to know this easy way. It seems to be every bloody trowel I break in bends the wrong way just as it’s getting broken in so I would welcome any tips you have to get them back to shape.

Hey mate, yeah we have done it like this in the past but you end up popping the rivets more often than anything else. One little tap and it's sorted. I understand you wouldn't recommend it mate and it sounds extreme but at the end of the day, if the trowels gone the wrong way its f#@ked anyway so if one good belt straightens it then its worth it. Chopping into the spine basically prises it away from the blade which grantees your putting the rivets under stress. Anyway, each to their own mate.
