Lawns may be the norm in America, but I've never been one to conform to social norms. My front yard started out as a monoculture, resource-heavy lawn, and I have transformed it into a diverse polyculture, that provides abundant food, shade, habitat, and beauty.
You don't need large areas to practice forest gardening. You don't need to dump your time, money, water, and energy into a lawn, when you can invest your energy in a diverse and visually interesting polyculture that gives you yields instead of taking resources.

We currently have a 50% lawn requirement which is crazy because we live in a desert. Luckily there is a bill making it's way through our state legislature that will prohibit HOAs and cities from being able to require it. I have already converted half my yard to a food forest leaving wide pathways of grass to meet the current 50% requirement.

I just don't understand the mentality that would be against food-foresting.

I am slowly replacing my lawn with garden, but in the meantime, I consider my lawn a crop, harvesting the clippings for use in the garden. I do not fertilize my lawn, nor do I ever water it.

I’m totally with you, Angela. Twenty one years ago our front yard was sod and we replaced it all with flowering shrubs, trees, plants and eventually a couple of raised beds for veg. It’s a complex, constantly evolving area. A pure joy!

One set of initials: HOA If you can avoid living in one, AVOID LIVING IN ONE. Unless it's easygoing about landscaping. (Edited to add: you look good! I hope this means the covid was mild)

For those in an HOA try to get in the landscaping group. You can bring about rule changes if you work respectively and bring honest researched based info to the group. Many people may want that grass/taken care space. But perhaps more diverse spots can be included. Show much money the assn. can save with alternatives. How much water/care time dollars can be saved. Good luck.

Totally agree. We would never have bought in an HOA community. I know some places, that is the only option. We need cultural reform to remove barriers to sustainability and HOAs are a BIG barrier for so many folks.

I think I'm at least some places, the HOAs are getting loser. My parents' HOA is using quite a few native grasses and plants in the common areas. They even planted red currants. I'd love to get them to plant elderberry. It's fine with them if you don't want a lawn, favoring native small plants. I think they're a stickler about trees, making a food forest difficult.

@@melissamybubbles6139 between my yard size and the HOA, there isn't going to be a food forest. Two or three fruit tree guilds, but no canopy to speak of. I'm good with that, and am getting some excellent ideas from these videos for flowering plants that make it look like a garden.

Those turkeys are adorable. Great ideas for less turf. Let your city grow the turf in parks, enjoy it there and then fill your yard with all kinds of great plants and grow the minimum lawn (if any) that you need, for croquet, football or putting. Whatever it is vital for. Glad you are on the mend.

Thank you for sharing your garden and addressing the lawn issue. The only "lawn" present on my half acre property (zone 10a) was over the septic system leach field. Not able to plant anything with deep roots there, I changed over to Kurapia, a very tough, low water need ground cover that does not require mowing. In the spring it is covered with tiny flowers that the bees love! The rest of the property is a food forest garden in development.

Your yard is so beautiful now, and very healing! what ideas do you have re: dealing with a front yard that slopes down to the street and has been made into tiers with dreadful railroad ties which are now pretty old and starting to decay in places... Ive been told not to plant any food plants because of the toxicity of the railroad ties which over the years likely has ruined the soil. I love your sweet chickens-turkeys?

Alright. In the last few days, I took circles out of the grass for flowers. Hopefully they will be a source of biodiversity and fun future years. I picked up four Midas Touch roses that smell really nice, and three dahlias. I planted five shooting stars (dodecatheon pulchellum) since they're native, two strawberries, and a bleeding heart. Soon hopefully I'll get a native Rocky Mountain penstemon, dianthus, maybe several larkspur, some annuals, and maybe a pink penstemon.

Can you make a video about which foods you buy at the store/farmer's market? We have a tiny garden, so we decided not to grow onions or garlic, even though we eat them daily, just because those veg are abundant and inexpensive at the store, we decided to focus on expensive and perishable things, or unusual things.

Hi! I am a transplant from Florida! Been here for ten years and thought I knew it all. Turn out I didn’t know shit. Your video on slugs saved my small homestead garden in my cul de sac🤣. Our large 110lb golden retriever was our savior! We brushed and brushed and protected our little seedlings that their earlier inceptions had been decimated. NOTHING worked. Then a week ago I came across your slug video and you SAVED my garden. Thank you so much! We have had so much rain. So so so much rain. The beneficial nematodes are coming next week…

In other parts of the world lawn is a recreational space. Playing with the kids, laying in the beautiful, soft carpet of green, throwing ball for the dog. I agree that lawn is a high maintenance and resource heavy space in the garden, and too big lawns are completely unnecessary. I think permaculture and lawn can coexist if you need the lawn for actual purpose other than to just watch it from your patio. At the end the garden must serve you and your specific needs. However, no mow may is totally misleading. If you don't mow your lawn that you use for recreational purposes, the grass stems will get leggy, sparsly leaved as it self shades itself, stems thicken, they get unpleasant to step on them barefoot, you ruin the whole leaf structure of the plant. Cutting it back in one go will hurt the plant and it will get yellow. Sadly really USA specific "problems" get viral all around the world. :/

Lawns can definitely be useful spaces for pets and kids and recreation. I think lawns with diverse species composition absolutely have their place in society - as I’ve said in other videos, they are important parts of community spaces. It’s not the idea of a greenspace that is a problem, it’s the American fixation on perfect, single/species lawns that consume huge quantities of resources (water, petroleum, time) and pollute the watershed and strip neighborhoods of habitat. I think we could all benefit from utilizing lawns in the commons, consolidating lawn space to community spaces, and changing the way we are obsessed as a culture with the Front yard lawn, and instead embracing a diversity of landscape designs that actually produce and are sustainable, instead of just using up resources.

Do you have a photo of your front yard from the street? I want to create a food forest in my front and back yards but am not quite sure how to do the front. I'm on a corner lot and my neighbor already turned me in to code enforcement because I had tree logs in my backyard. I have since put up a fence around the back but cannot do the same in the front. Thank you for all the great info you share on your channel.

I love love love your videos, but these tours with a camera that's darting this way and that tend to be nauseating. In order to not be ill I have to avert or close my eyes and just listen, occasionally pausing the video to make it safe to look and get visual context. I think the best way to counter this is to move more slowly and deliberately. That said, I'm not sure if there are enough of us who sensitive to the moving camera to warrant changing your natural style and expression. Regardless, your work is excellent and appreciated.

I'm very prone to motion sickness as well. There are some people I have quit following because I could never watch what they were filming and listening only doesn't always work. That being said, I rarely have trouble with Angela's videos because she doesn't usually bounce/dart around and the few times she does I glance off to the side.

Idk about this. Depends on where you live. When you live in a subdivision this can look messy in front. In the back it’s nice. There needs to be balance imo. If you’re just in a neighborhood or have your own acres do what you want.

I think you just have to design your garden with consideration to your neighbors. I would put my prettier plants, like fruit trees and foods for pollinators, to the front and make sure my compost, tool shed, chicken coop etc was tucked away in the back.

I’m still finding it 14 years later. Little bits of it everywhere when I dig to plant a perennial. We sheet mulched with cardboard and 2 inches of manure and straw initially. I had no idea that sod came with plastic mesh underneath it and so it wasn’t until quite a while later when I started planting trees and things that I realized there was this plastic netting everywhere in my yard. I am so frustrated that start manufacturers are allowed to sell their product on a substrate of plastic pollution
