This video just reminds me that after I die, my partner won't make any distinction between my PS2 copy of Kuon versus my copy of GTA Vice City.

@@georgemuggleton6571That isn't sad at all. Expecting your partner to know every nuance of your hobbies is sad. Wise and considerate people make a list called the "when I die" list, categorizing and informing whomever of what they have.

The only people around me are my wife and kids. My boys don't really care about physical games. Despite my efforts, they are completely committed to digital titles. So that just leaves my wife. I feel like a child showing off a new toy to my friend when I get a new game. Haha...she plays along and doesn't shame me, but it's mutually understood that deep down....she doesn't care.

FPGA emulation is pretty much 100% accurate. It's getting harder and harder to justify buying original nowadays other then "i like plugging the cart in the machine" which sounds absolutely ridiculous! I used to be that guy till i got a Mister and now collecting has slowed down quite a bit as Mister looks incredible through a CRT or an OLED for a fraction of the cost. I think you was right when you mentioned 2021-24 being the end of the boom era, i see stagnation until people just aren't willing to pay these prices and a sudden drop - like all collectibles sometimes they are hot and sometimes they are not.

I'm with you on the quality of emulation for certain platforms. I got the Analogue Pocket + Dock, and feel I never need to buy an NES cart ever again.
@drivingnowherecomic

I get it, I do. And I know it sounds ridiculous to say "I like plugging the cart in the machine" and I know they're not making CRTs anymore... but that's honestly half the enjoyment for me. There's a lot of times I give games more of a chance because of how much goes into opening the box, reading the manuals, loading up the cart, and finagling my hardware/CRT to work. Not as simple as swapping between roms instantly. "Eh... I guess I'll give this game another five minutes..." that sounds like a bad thing, but it really isn't for me lol. Eventually the CRTs I have will die. I'm not hardcore collecting anymore and am happy with what I have. Might get an everdrive later for convenience, but for now I enjoy browsing my library to pick something out to play. I'll prolly go the retrotink 4k + OLED route eventually and while I do prefer original hardware, the FPGA emulation stuff is impressive. Not a handheld gamer, but even I want one of those FPGBC kits... For now I'm enjoying what I have while I have it.

@@drivingnowherecomic you can hook up the mister to a CRT it looks fantastic as you get all variations of outputs. I used to be the same as yourself but eventually you do grow out of it a bit

@@retropursuit992 Oh I'm sure I'll eventually get fed up with this, but for now I'm enjoying what I have. I do like that there's steps being made towards preserving these games for the future though. Again I'm pretty accepting of the fact CRTs will die, but after seeing the results of the retrotink 4k with OLED, I'm optimistic about the future. I'm just happy to enjoy what I have while it works. At least I'm open to the future when my old stuff breaks, I just hope these options become more affordable when that happens lol.

@@drivingnowherecomic yeah the retrotink 4k is really something, price needs to come down over the years though to make it accessible for the masses. I actually got rid of my trinitron a few months back, was good fun but OLED + tink 4K with the mister has scratched my itch for everything up to N64. The systems above that are actually better played via emulation due to up scaling and all the other various display settings you get turn them into a modern day game - I love the 60 fps patches the most game changing

Its sad how hard it is to find someone irl to share the joy of games with lol. I play games with my friend but im not always that into it. I get tired easily even when i do like the game. Ive tried introducing games to her that i like a little better, but she's less interested in my collection than i am hers xD

It's like anything else, if it's not the best most people just don't care. Not many people care about what's going on with all the great bodybuilders in competitions, but most people are interested in who Mr. Olympia is. Not many people care if they see someone driving a Porsche on the freeway, but most people look if they see a Lambo on the road. That's how it is with any collection, if it doesn't stand out in some way, like being the only complete collection in the world or something like that, not many people care about it. Almost no one really.

Back before speculators and resellers essentially ruined collecting by driving up prices, it was the thrill of the hunt. Showing people what I found and we'd trade and play games together. Now collecting is pay to win, whoever has the largest wallet wins and it makes the entire thing feel entirely hollow and pointless. Who cares what anyone just got when anyone can get anything any time by just paying more for it? Its why after decades of garage sale and thrift shop hunting, I sold off a majority of my collection and pretty much emulate everything or use a flash cart.

Can't agree with you harder. I only buy what I will actually play and in genres I like, and games that are usually affordable. There's no shame in emulating old consoles and games that are stupidly expensive. I'd rather buy a new kayak paddle than buy a used copy of Outrun 2006 for 300 bucks. Games go up from there. I can't even imaging dropping a grand on a single game.

They need to buy gatcha force for GameCube...ykno for the system they didn't care about when it was on shelves, yea, they need that to feel whole, regardless if its just gunna sit on the shelf for years potentially

Hello how are you. I agree with many things, but... If you want to play a game you have to buy and pay whatever price it is. If you don't buy you became a cheapskate. Don't think that you are going to live 200 years, buy the game you like and enjoy it.
