Damon was a pain at first, but for a good reason. He lost his sister for something that hardened him into something almost inhumane. He was a literally machine of protection. His protective skills also revealed Tessa's true identity. Even best friends could be secret enemies. Sometimes you have to "Treat everyone as your enemy" and it's always better "To be safe than sorry." :)
