Working as a bike mechanic, had a customer come in with a brand new ride1up bike for us to build last week. It came out of the box with damaged paint, destroyed crown race, and damaged headset bearings. No visible damage to the box. Customer is getting the run around regarding getting a replacement bike from ride1up and they are basically saying tough crap, we'll send replacement crown race and bearings. No discount or anything for the customer who received a damaged new bike and they won't take it back under warranty. Not impressed at all with their customer support.

Same can be said for all bikes, head down any residential street and just about every home will house at least one bicycle, how many of those bicycles ever get ridden? Ebikes are new to the general population, so the number that are bought, ridden a few times and shoved in a garage is going to be fairly large. The "dad bike" ebike market is going to be crazy in another 4 or 5 years. Which should be awesome times. If you were to tally up miles ridden by bicycle the vast, vast majority would have been ridden by a small fraction of the total bike owning population (in the US). Of that small fraction, ebikes will have taken a substantial share. The beauty of it is that, at least for myself, nearly every mile on my ebike is a mile that I would have driven. For recreation/fitness I still ride my road or fat bike as my ebike is a chonky beast. I honestly don't know how many miles I have on my ebike total, assembled from kit in 2016-7, I've got just over 1000 miles since May this year commuting and running errands. I would HIGHLY recommend an ebike for those living car free! Picking up a trailer makes grocery getting a breeze. The maintenance is real, but not expensive, time consuming or difficult. Race compound tires may not me a great choice, but continental marathon or similar have no problem. With a mid-drive (i have a bbso2) keeping the chain cleanish and not grinding gears is mandatory unless you wish to really go through chains and cassettes. Also I stuck with an 8 speed set up for the beefier chain and cheap components for this reason. A logical strategy is to buy 3 chains with every cassette, rotate chains every 3-400 miles until they are all worn nice and evenly with the cassette. Ok, that sounds awful, it really isn't that bad, the chain and cassette I have on there now are still just fine after at least 1400 miles, worn enough that the cassette is due to be replaced with the chain, but still shifting perfectly well. When that day comes it'll be the third chain and second cassette overall in 3 years of relatively heavy use and 6 years total, more than an analog bike, but not insane.

E bikes are lots of fun. They're a great equalizer among riders of different abilities and fitness levels. They're great for folks with physical issues and limitations. Make sure you can afford all the replacements and service or it's DIY. E bikes eat drivetrains, brake parts and tires. E MTBs shred parts , break chains, cassettes and chainrings easily if not shifted carefully. The effects of additional weight and wattage are common sense. A cable replacement or dropper /hydro brake upgrade often requires serious disassembly of frame, drivetrain, suspension, pivots, shock etc. On a full suspension Levo we charge upwards of $200 for a single cable. Time is money. We're in an expensive locale. Certain e bikes have everything packed tight running through the frame, so anytime you service something it all needs to go back just so. The e bikes sold at my shop are a source of constant warranties. If the bike comes from elsewhere, service costs $120/hour. So be prepared to have your bike sit in the shop waiting for parts. Lots of my customers are older rich guys. We are surrounded by big mountains and these guys run constantly on turbo mode. This highly stresses the motors. Many of my customers are on their 3rd warranty motor in 2-3 years. The small cog often wears out requiring new $200+ cassettes. Stock wheels are often under built and poorly assembled. Haha,for weight reduction! Ebikes are at least as complex and time intensive as integrated aero bikes. If you buy a new e bike, try to get a good extended maintenance contract. It will definately save you a bunch of money. If you buy a used bike, inspect EVERYTHING carefully. Avoid buying someone else's problem in either regard. All this is actually great news for probmechanics like me. We have the expertise, but we're not giving it away for free. Its job security. Personally, when I get too old, I'll just buy a motorbike. Its a much better value. I can ride demo e bikes whenever I want.

This confirms many of the reservations I have about E-bikes. I prefer to go the other way; 1 speed. Make your bike as light as possible (without going crazy) and beef up your physical prowess. Sweet video man. I've been running an E-Hardtail for my low effort days for 2 years now and I absolutely love it. Of course I wouldn't want it to be my main bike but for days when I want to just rip 10+ descents, work on my downhill skills, and just have a killer time its absolutely perfect. I 100% agree with you on the drivetrain parts. Even with Ebike specific stuff I'm on derailleur #3 (Even though I think that is just an issue with the way they assembled sram EX1.) As a tool for polarized training its the perfect thing to get your endurance up on your low effort days while still riding the same stuff you would do on your max effort gnarly days. I normally get like 30ish miles of trail at around 4.5 to 5k feet of elevation out of a battery and like 5ish hours on trail. One thing I would recommend on the Emtb side of things is to really do your research if you're looking into buying something from a big manufacturer because companies like Trek and Specialized are gigantic rip offs. A perfect example would be comparing the parts spec on a Marin Alpine Trail e2 vs a Trek Rail 9.8. The Trek costs $3000 more for a similar spec. With that kind of price gulf I fail to see the value. Anyways rant over.

Thanks Eric! I had an ebike since December 2020. It’s an Ecells 1000 watt all wheel drive fat tire full sus bike. I still ride my other 2 flat bar bikes . I ride this ebike weekly ,too! Today I rode 45.91 miles in 2 hours 54 minutes. I rode up a hill so steep that coasting the bike down I hit 36 mph not using any watts. Some things I learned first while it’s full sus riding off road on a 96 lb bike is a resounding no. But this bike has a 10 speed derailleur. That’s good cuz 3 weeks ago I peddled it home 10 plus miles when it died going uphill. It doesn’t push real well either. I surprised myself being 67 years old and able to peddle it without motor assist. So this bike has 500 watt motors in both hubs and 2 batteries also. I still enjoy it . It does have a throttle and I overrode the the governor so it will actually go over 32 mph on throttle. It can be set to 3 ,5,9 motor speeds I chose 5 I ride with a cadence and ride 17-20 mph on gear 3 of the 5 speed. I think this bike is a blast . But I wish I bought a smaller ,lighter version. This is a tank!

I've owned an ebike, and I've rode several others, and I'm a fan, totally fun. But the reason I sold mine was because I just wasn't choosing to ride it over my other bikes enough. And then it started to bother me thinking that day by day the battery is getting worse and worse, and that at any time any electrical issue may pop-up. It's just considering the cost, it felt like a bad idea in terms of money to not be using it a lot. I guess the devaluation curve on e-bikes will look worse then comparable priced standard bikes. A 7 year old carbon road bike is fine, but a 7 year old ebike, hmm not sure I'd want to buy that.

Several of my older customers are on their 2nd or 3rd warranty motor in less than 3 years. They're usually running their motors on turbo mode constantly in our big local mountains. E bikes eat drivetrain parts and brakes for lunch. The extra weight and wattage make this logical. E bikes are a constant source of warranties for us. Service and wiring are definately complex and labor intensive. Seriously consider about buying an extended service warranty. It will pay for itself. E bikes are certainly job security for mechanics like me. They're lots of fun, but you've got to budget extra money for replacements and service. They are not nearly as affordable, simple and reliable as regular bicycles.

@@BruceChastain I think the biggest issue is marketing bullshit, materialism and merely being gullible. The larger bike industry is pretty well known and documented to be money hungry and often irresponsible towards their consumers. Its evident their only care is profit taking and pleasing stockholders. Im privy to constant warranties, safety recalls and all sorts of time wasting issues that make me less productive. Therefore I earn less money. I sort of resent that, but I don't really fix bikes for the money. I don't need to. I just enjoy my job, believe it or not! When it stops being fun I'll quit and my bosses all know it. I enjoy getting my hands dirty and solving problems. Ive helped build things from carbon that fly in space, yet I'll only buy metal bikes. Ive also built METAL test hardware for a mechanical engineering test lab at NASA. My boss completely shattered a carbon h'bar in an expert downhill race just yesterday. He cased a jump, but wouldn't have crashed if the bar didn't break. He's riding metal bars from now on. Many large manufacturers (making things in Asia) almost solely rely on retailers to make up for the brunt of their compromise. I resigned from Rockshox when they tried to force me to a sign off unsafe crown/ steerer assemblies. 10000 questionable forks went on the market. I identified the exact cause of the problem. Worn out press tooling. SIMPLE Hardware I could have machined in less than a day. Ive also worked as a source inspector at several manufacturers not related to bicycles. We built stuff human lives rely upon. This isn't 'QC' used as a quality process. We used 'QA', quality assurance, a much more intensive and expensive process. I know what many companies try to get away with. Nobody is fooling me. I also know well that there are good practical alternatives available to bike consumers, but people need to ignore marketing BS. Research, learn and think for themselves. A consumer is SOLELY responsible how they part with their own freakin money! Its not logical to trade money for even potential problems. I'm a retired mechanical inspector and machinist from high reliability industries, so the low quality and poor engineering, not to mention impracticality of production bikes is quite apparent to me. This is what I rant about often. I'm going to keep beating this drum! I simply love simple bicycles. Bicycles can be extremely simple machines for the vast majority of consumers. I enjoy serving my customers and helping out like minded bike freaks. Cycling nearly saved my life. I'm soon moving somewhere quieter, less crowded with lots of big open space. I'm also an avid 4 wheeler. Ive wrenched on all sorts of machinery. I'm very sure motorcycles are easier to service as well as much better engineered, not to mention, a far better value than E bikes. When I can pedal hard any longer that's what I'll get. I can ride all the demo bikes, e bikes or otherwise if I want. I can get all this overpriced stuff not much above cost. People don't want to know what productive bikes really cost! Not considering what they're charging. I have riding buddies who build my custom frames. I'm glad to pay them full price or barter my time and skills. I'm learning to braze and weld. I build custom wheels as a business. I design, spec and assemble all my bikes from a bare frame. I can make my own high quality products if I'm motivated. DIY has the largest potential for the highest quality as far as I'm concerned!

My experience on a cargo mid drive ebike is that I was able to get about 5500 km out of one 10 speed drivetrain. That was with using it on hills, fully loaded up, and hauling a kid around on it on a daily basis. That's decent. The bike went through two sets of brake pads during the same period, but the drivetrain and the brake pads have been the only maintenance expenses on the bike since I got it. I rarely use it on anything over the lowest battery assist level, and I think it's worth noting that that's probably a significant factor in how long the drivetrain lasted. It's been an excellent purchase, and has offset most of our car trips, petrol and vehicle maintenance.

I'm incredulous you only lost one bar in 16 mi. circuit; tho, the battery loss doesn't show right away; when you ride it next, you'll notice a sudden, precipitous drop in battery life, down to two bars! This is why torque-sensing mid-drives are the better choice, in my opinion. Also, buying or building an e-bike with a shift sensor/cutoff helps to mitigate the premature wear on drivetrains. you need to rebuild your ehub,, add a oilfill/weephole in the shell so you can add lubricant and cleaners. there are some sheilds you can take off some bearings to make it spin better and you just gotta keep it clean on the inside which isnt hard. with higher voltages its easier to get faster bikes. nice rim brakes. its a good idea for many ebikes, and bikes. you should get a frame bag, add a second battery to run in paralell to put in it and change the controller to a 21amp controller. the way to do ebike is Certainly to build them up yourself. with the high cost of the complete ebike the reasons are evident. you can get bill ball skateboard bearings and replace the planetary gear bearings with them and get a more robust and faster ehub. you need to disassemble and learn to maintain the insides of an ehub because when your bike gets locked up outside in the rain or you gotta bike through lots of rain it can engress into the hub. oh you need a weephole drilled in your sw102 display. you can put one on the right side5mm or more down from the edge where the buttons are with a dremel. this is so if water gets in it can get out. even better yet, if you can place your display in a frame bag or in some sort of bike bag and just never look at it thats even better. rain will brake it

Not much choice in the mid price range for a reasonably light 40mm road tire that does not weigh 800 grams plus. I am almost over being annoyed that I can't keep up with people who hack their ebike to go over 30mph/50kph. I want to convert a BMX into an Ebike, probably mid drive because of weight distribution. Suspension does help a lot in rougher terrain so I might get a suspension fork. Less watts means more mileage, right? So I'm wondering

@brianwalker9793
@brianwalker9793 Жыл бұрын
Hey I own a V2 also and you can get like 30s on. Stock rims are no great shakes but not bad. It comes with Kenda Kwest 28s, which suit it well and are puncture resistant (although I respect ERic's desire to tinker with tires, it's meant for road and not gravel!) They make a gravel edition with disc brakes and I think a bit more tire clearance. I could see the benefit of tubeless if you can re-lace yourself you may find it economical to replace it but that's pretty low on my priority list. Saddle - Silicone Wolftooth Foam Grips - Carbon Bars - Carbon Stem - mid-reach brake and pad upgrade - Carbon seatpost has been my upgrade path so far. Lot's of people put Redshift stems and seatposts on and love them! Also I am not a Slime / Flatout fan but lots of riders put it in their rear tire as changing out a flat with a belt drive nutted rear hub means either more tools or a really not fun roadside tube change.

I've been thinking about building a e bike commuter with racks. Hub drive info was a good point on drive train strain. I think I wanna put wide drop bars on this bad dog. Double battery set up is the look is seems? (50 miles commute?)
@All4Grogg
@All4Grogg Жыл бұрын
If anyone tries to sell you a battery based on range, they are full of it. First start with how much assistance you desire, that'll determine the draw of the motor in watts. Once you have a good guesstimate of how many watts convert to watt hours and purchase a battery that'll provide that and a good cushion. Climbs, cargo and speed play a massive part if determining range and they are all different from rider to rider. I have a 42 mile commute with ~2500' of climbing, my BBS02 equipped hardtail with 26x1.75 tires and slammed stem can get me to work and back with 480 watt hours if I'm taking it slow and pushing myself, I can also burn through 700-800 watt hours if I got up late on a Friday (sprint stage) and feel like taking it easy without going slower. Same bike, same battery, same rider, same route even, but different choices and thus wildly different "range" figures. Sounds like a different language, but I assure you it isn't that complicated.
@kipcc3918

Its funny that I only achieve top speed with a tailwind 🤣 on an EBike, after that no more assist. They should rename top speed into “ final speed that the motor will run until “. And yeah battery life is crappy and bulky that it doesn’t make sense. 6miles throttle only at high was the most I was able to get mine. 😅

When you decrease the gear inches in your gearing, does it decrease your speed on level 5? And/or does the new gearing decrease range? Not sure exactly how those are related, but I feel like they are.

Well the motor itself will still go to its max speed, cause you can just spin the crank without engaging the pawls of the hub… and ultimately do 0 works. But yes, I spin the gear out sometimes

Were those tires ebike rated? Our last ebikes were 63lb fat tire bikes and after 500mi the stock tires still looked great. Got tired of lifting them on the rack so recently bought two Velotric Thunder 1 ST's @ 36lbs. They pedal so easy we mostly ride them without assist, but it's nice for hills/wind. Looked at the Roadster but ruled out all single speed bikes as the loss in climbing performance isn't worth the slight weight penalty you get with 7-9 speeds.
@richarde1355
@richarde1355 Жыл бұрын
What kind of top end speed are you getting with the different gearing? And, you mention how significantly heavier ebikes are than standard; of course they would be, right? I understand the 1UP Roadster V2 Gravel weighs like 33#; is that accurate intel? That is no svelte lightweight, but it’s not killer heavy like some of the many 50 pound plus budget ebikedms out there.

I haven't ever fully killed it using the dual battery setup. But I know 100km is doable for sure on it. I'm in Hawaii with serious headwinds for context. I did not do hills on the metric course.

Also, changing a rear flat on a hub drive ebike, especially on the road, ranges from being a real bitch to completely impossible. And as a shop mechanic I can say that most (not all) ebikes are speced with disc brakes that give zero consideration to the fact the bike has a motor AND weighs more than an analog bike. Newbies especially (throttle and brake at same time 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️) are burnin’ through the pads.
