Another not too bad digital remastering. Original recording from 28. December 1910.
Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo tells the story of an actor, Canio (Caruso), who plays a clown in a comedy troupe in Italy.
Canio finds that he has been betrayed by his wife and becomes heartbroken. The song is one of extreme emotion where he wants revenge for satisfaction.
CANIO
No! Pagliaccio non son;
se il viso è pallido,
è di vergogna, e smania di vendetta!
L'uom riprende i suoi dritti,
e'l cor che sanguina vuol sangue
a lavar l'onta, o maledetta!
CANIO
No, I am Pagliaccio no longer:
If my face is white, it is with shame
and the longing for revenge!
My manhood claims its rights again,
and my bleeding heart
needs blood to wash away the shame,
o vile woman! ...
No, I am a buffoon no longer!...
I was a fool to pick you up,
an orphan, by the roadside,
half dead from hunger,
and offer you a name and a love
which was mad and passionate!
(He falls dejectedly into a chair.)

The illusion of being present in the concert in 1910 - I almost believed to be there! The Caruso recordings dont give credit to the greatest tenor of the world through all times! But this recording showed some of his greatness! Thanks to Mr. Frøkjær who makes this come to life at KZfaq!

Yes, Canio was a signature role for Caruso. I guess he could identify well with the role - the mother of his two sons having run off with the chauffeur :-)

Canio's been having to act in what he now knows is happening in real life. In the play he just has to lump it, however, and he just... snaps.

I don't know if Leon was aware of C when he composed Pagliacci. But if he wasn't who then is singing the aria? Where does C get what he gets? We have to assume C got it all. How could there be any more to get?But is this what Leon had in mind?I have just recently become aware of the song the composer sings on which the (great) singer soars. Is the Caruso aria we hear the aria Leon composed? I find it all so fascinating. When composer and performer resonate in sync, there we have The Divine Art.

Everything that Caruso did was perfectly in sync with the composer's intentions. That is why he is the greatest tenor ever

@@chastenor Yes, so clear, so easy to understand, and from his heart. Not like most 'famous' present tenors, that don't know how to vocalize properly and only go for the highest and unintelligible note.

The answer is that Leoncavallo wrote a fantastic opera and then Caruso appeared who was the greatest exponent of this any other music

Only Enrico Caruso and Mario del Monaco. The rest should stay silent and listen to learn.

That's a pretty cheeky and arrogant remark. Typically coming from people who can't sing themselves.

@@jenspflug7473, there is no sign of arrogance in my comment. What I wanted to say was that according to my taste "No! Pagliaccio non son!" is the best in those two performances (Caruso and del Monaco). Scientific approach to describe the quality of voice is not of my interest. I am a listener who loves opera, not a professional singer. Presently, we have no even one tenor who could equal to those two. Let me know if you know one.

Sorry!

@@tomfroekjaer. You are right. the date of 1908 I took mistakenly from recording of "La donna è mobile". How did you find this catalogue? However, one column is missing there. The name of opera should be included. It would be much easier to browse between all positions. While a column with "vocalist, tenor vocal" is meaningless and really could be dropped. You see, not everybody remembers or memorizes titles of all arias.
