It seems Page had an approach on free jazz when it comes to live solo. Even when he had not mention this like an influence, maybe that just was the spirit of the age.

Holy mother of god. I have listened to this guitar solo more times than I could ever hope to count. Like in the hundreds of times. And while I can’t really play guitar (I’m a drummer), I have memorized every single note of this solo in my mind. Every nuance, every dynamic, how he strikes or plucks or strums the strings. Dude. You did this as close to perfect as I could ever imagine someone doing it. Again, I’m a drummer. So I can very much tell how Page’s timing in what he plays is unconventional to say the least. Some call it a sloppy sound. I think it’s just a completely different way of looking at timing. But it is something that I cannot imagine is easy at all to emulate. Probably goes against all your muscle memory, like when a drummer first starts learning to play reggae. So I am just in total awe of how well you did this. You clearly listened to this solo just as intently as I always have. You didn’t miss a thing. It’s honestly comforting to know others out there (especially those who can actually play) get as deeply engaged as I do. It can feel lonely sometimes when you can just tell how few people really dig into those individual notes and contemplate them and live in them. So beyond being in awe, I’m thankful. Thank you. Wondering what some of your other favorite solos are. I’be listened to this one so much. But there are a few others: - Santana’s “Baila Mi Hermana” live at CalJam (can also be found on disc 2 of Viva Santana) - Band of Gypsies’ “Machine Gun” - Dire Straits’ “Once Upon A Time in the West” off live Alchemy You gained a subscriber through your cover of this. Man, I’d love to see what you do with those!

I enjoyed your post. This solo is singled out in Page's canon of live work (and studio) as NOT being sloppy. Separate that, my own belief is that Page's live sloppiness is due 95% percent of the time to alcohol.

Page created so much great guitar, he truly is the man, you can throw gilmour and Clapton in there with him as the best but i think Jimmy really went in so many different directions and recorded the most unique and diverse tracks that he shines a bit more then all others.

Well I have to admit to being bowled over by that. I know this solo in my head inside out and learned chunks of it way back, and I watch a lot of solo covers on KZfaq including some of the shreddier ones. But I don't think I've seen anyone come so close as this to nailing the tiny nuances of a solo, eg the pick attack and the precise feel of the bends and vibrato and especially the less well-defined parts of the original. It's not like he's playing even sextuplets at any point like some shredder. Bloody well done.
