This is great for children's clothing. You just open the knot of the elastic band and tie a new one to make it wider, or replace the elastic. The more the fabric at waistband is ruffled the more you can expand the waist to accommodate a child's growth. This is great during rapid growth bursts when you cannot kerp buying new clothes every couple of weeks. Before overlockers were ubiquitous, and clothes were more expensive, all clothes came with a wide seam allowance, tgat allowed weight fluctuation. Especially children's clothes came with a generous seam allowance: you could just open up the seam and sew it again a bit closer to the edge of the fabric to a new size. We called it "easing the seams" or "letting out seam".. If you opened the seam at the bottom of trouser legs, you would find fabric folded inside to allow adding length, until you only had enough for a narrow seam. It was a different, waste not, want not era, when patching clothes for home and playground were acceptable and common practice and men were also expected to know how to darn their own socks.

this is easier to do if you thread it through by attaching a safety pin to the end of the lace (easier to grab and less friction against the fabric) also you can use an elastic with the little button holes and attach buttons to the sides of the skirt (inside, ca. 2 inches from belly button on each side) and then thread the elastic through like shown and use the button holes to secure it on the buttons you’ve sewn in. it’s a little more complicated, but may be more comfortable for some people. i usually prefer this method.

Tip: if you dont have shoe lace and only have a normal ribbon or lace. Just tie it with a bobby pin or a perdible (much better) so you can push it through the fabric.

You can attach a long safety pin 🧷 and use any fabric strip as well. Personally i feel like it’s easy to feel and push through 😊

Just did this today with some pants! I tied the string to a crochet hook and got it through in about 45 seconds!

I do it with elastic. No need for tying it each time and makes it super comfortable.

You can sew the lace in or tie each of the ends of the shoelace to avoid needing to re-tie it everytime

I generally learned from my mom at childhood - how to put any type of lace in pants & just tie a Safetypin in the front , it will be easier to slide also once it is inside the pant , I gather as much as I can in one place then push to to the lenth & repeat the process, it's easier that way (I don't know if I described it good enough to be understood 😅)
