Living in US it’s difficult to wrap my head around a place that uses the honor system. It would be the sequel to Gone in 60 Seconds.

At my last job they had an honor box of snacks and we regularly witnessed people take snacks without paying . I think the vendor marked up all the items to pay for loss and luckily we always had somebody near so nobody ever walked off with the whole box . Agreed , an entire room full of items unattended would be a losing proposition in the US even with cameras .

@@bryanobrien2726 I always think of the Halloween ring videos when people put out bowls of candy. The sad part is when it’s the parents and not just the kids dumping the whole bowl in their kids bag.

We have local farmers selling produce and you'll often see a box to put your money in, completely unmanned. The farmers are very trusting; but I've talked to a few and they say that people often will leave a $5 bill for something that's $3 or $4 because they don't carry change, so they're usually making more money off the produce they sell. I love finding those farms, especially when the fruit is ripe. I live in what's known as the fruit belt and there are many vineyards around. I can never remember where the farms are though come next season 😂

I love that the honor system is so big there, and it’s followed. It seems so simple and so much more convenient it’s what I truly wish we adopted from Japan before anything honestly. But I love all the videos Eric!!! Thank you for sharing your experiences with us!

Closest I’ve seen in England to the honesty system is folks who grow veggies or have eggs or home made jams, who set up a little stand outside the front of their property with a little tin to just put money in when you chose something. There were a lot in Norfolk and we knew a house that had bags of literally the best potatoes they’d grown and we’d always visit there on holiday to take some home

Riding bicycles out in the Japanese countryside, there are unmanned sheds loaded with shelves containing bags of fresh produce (usually 100 yen/bag, a few years ago). Grab the bags of fruit or vegetables you want and drop payment in coins in a locked wooden donation box. Really nice to see Japan is so low-crime that these honor system stores work.

Due to economic necessity, these types of unstaffed shops have been a part of Japanese culture for decades. Along with vending machines, they reduce the number of staff that businesses need to employ. This is particularly relevant since Japan's population has been declining since the 1990s, which has contributed to insufficient workforce numbers. There are now more jobs than available people to fill them.

Interesting video Our Mom would make Beef Tongue for my older brother & Dad, she cooked it like Corned Beef ... She also would make stuffed heart, she would stuff it with bread stuffing, like a chicken or turkey. The "hamburger", we would call that "poor man's Salisbury Steak"
@eatlikealocal
@eatlikealocal 2 ай бұрын
The Japanese HAMBĀGU ハンバーグ is derived from the original Germany Hamburg Steak, which predates American-style Hamburgers and Salisbury steak. The German dish contains ground meat combined with breadcrumbs, and sometimes onions. During the late 19th Century, that dish was introduced to Japan by European merchants, where it was further developed into a Japanese version. The Japanese HAMBĀGU and American Hamburger are two different branches that descended from the original dish.

I stayed in a hotel in Houston Texas and they had a room with frozen foods and snacks. It was also on a honor system. You filled out a sheet of what you got and put it in a box, and it was charged to your room. Or you could place cash in the box. Everything was under video surveillance so they knew if you took stuff and didn't pay. I wouldn't know if people tried to get away with not paying. I always paid for what I took. I stayed there during Hurricane Harvey. It was a extended stay motel.
