I thought for sure it was going to be a spider issue. I am an ASE master technician with car and light truck diesel certification and I have over forty years of experience. Regardless of how long I have been doing this and what I have seen, I always use a method similar to yours. You call it fast tech, which is brilliant I must say, I wasn't ambitious enough to name my method. The best I did was call it the process of elimination. I approach every job the same way, with a child's mind. What do I have and what do I not have? Experience does make some aspects of that process easier, answering the question does the engine have compression for example. I, as well as you, can listen to an engine being cranked and tell if it has compression. I love the starting fluid test as well because that answers a lot of questions. I doesn't tell me what the problem is exactly, but I know what it is not, which is a whole ass-load of things eliminated with one simple test. Then as you demonstrated you determine if it is a control or delivery issue. My whole career I've had countless people tell me how to do my job, but it leads me to ask the question, why did you bring it to me instead of fixing it yourself? To which they always have some lame answer, usually preceded by a period of awkward silence, eye twitching reminiscent of a seizure, and sagging of the musculus orbicularis oris. Not only am I a mechanic, I am also an RN with thirty years experience and I have come to the conclusion that the vast majority of the general population are retarded but they have a false sense of intellectual superiority. They are too stupid to know that they are stupid. It is the nonverbal clues that tell the real story. The fact that shit nobody else can fix ends up in your shop and mine. What I find most amusing is, what we do is not that hard. Use the scientific method and the process of elimination. Find out what it is not and logic will dictate what is the problem. With any mystery, if you eliminate all obvious conclusions, the illogical, however improbable, must invariably be true. I must compliment you on the caliber of your sarcasm. I pride myself on my rapier wit, which I have developed over many years of being exposed to the general public, but you sir have a God-like prowess of which I am in awe. I developed my cynicism and sarcastic response mechanism for protection from the vast throngs of low functioning Neanderthals who roam the planet. George Carlin said it best. Think about how dumb the average person is, and half the population is dumber than that. Great video, and thank you for the laughs.

A know it all can ruin the educational experience for everyone. I am not a technician by trade but I treasure everything I learned from my Vocational Instructors in High School in 87. I’ve kept up with technology as it’s effected what I drive and occasionally build but some of the things I have to bring to PROFESSIONAL’S such as yourself. The thing that people seems to forget is that it doesn’t matter that it takes you 25 minutes to do a 2 hour job, they’re paying you for the YEARS it’s taken for you to learn how to do it in 25 minutes. Matt, geez, I must agree with you, some people have some crazy diagnostic strategies. I always like to check the tyre pressures and blinker fluid as my first priority when trying to diagnose a crank no start. At the very least, I've always found it to be a super reliable way to rule out what is definitely NOT the problem👈👍🤣🤣

ALWAYS check the Dilithium crystals FIRST, then the Flux capacitor NEXT, then the multiplex demodulator. If no faults found, turn your tuke inside-out, pour a Zima, and channel your inner Miagi.

I was a mechanic for 45 years, 27 of those self employed. If my crystal ball was malfunctioning I would use the Vulcan Mind Meld to zero in on the problem. I never could find a reputable crystal ball repair. Boy-oh-boy! The diagnostic stories I could tell you.

Guys, I would have definitely gone straight for the fuel pump first! My method is from some guy on KZfaq named Matt who told me about a super effective method called FASTTEC. You see, in his method the first letter is F which stands for fuel and it all starts at the fuel pump. Checking one fuel pump vs.178 GROUNDS!!! sounds to me like the customer will get their car back a whole lot faster haha. But in all seriousness, your universal scientific approach by far the most efficient and effective way to diagnose any car and much appreciated by many!

Nothing wrong with the way you diagnosed this problem. One thing you could have quickly checked while scanning, was for rpm signal. Would be a quick way to rule out the crank sensor

For me the first step (which you covered) is to question the customer thoroughly in order to get a good understanding, and history of what is going on. Not critical in this particular diag., but very important as a first step. Sometimes even a call back to get more history and information. This should be step one in any diagnosis. Try to get a clear understanding of the customer's complaint. In this case the history of the problems the customer experienced might lead one to suspect a fuel pump issue. I think your methods are solid and look forward to more videos. Entertaining video to be sure. Thx

I started as an EMT in 1987 and a professional mechanic in 1989 transferring to heavy trucks class 8 in 1994 and never looked back. Don't pay the peanut gallery any mind, keep doing you. You must have fixed the GROUNDS by hitting the tank😂 I needed a laugh, great video…safety tip that you followed anyway, if I’m concerned about a no fuel or spark scenario, and want to check for spark in the atmosphere, I try to check fuel 1st, just so I don’t have fuel around. The best diagnostic process is the one that proves your fault. Some people need to realize that the best “general” diagnostic process is the one that leads to the accurate diagnosis. Pattern failures are a nice cheat to check 1st, but no one knows them all. Keep it up!

I'm watching this video as you go and commenting as as needed whenever I see I have actually ran into this exact problem one time ago I had a 1998 2500 HD two-wheel drive 5 speed manual with the 7.4 l Vortec 454 and turned out it was my battery the battery wasn't dead the terminal itself was bad the lead terminal itself

Truly enjoyed this video. Timely, as I assisted my sister and brother-in-law last week on an intermittent no start issue with a 4.0l Ford Explorer. They were frustrated as shops couldn't replicate the problem, started throwing parts at it, attributed to a vacuum leak, etc. Engine would simply die while being driven, and would often not restart, an obviously inconvenient (and dangerous) situation. A quick code scan indicated a lean condition on both banks and (with an inexpensive OBDBII bluetooth code reader and a free application on my phone) , LTFT's were very high (+30%) on both banks, properly reading oxygen sensors, a very high calculated engine load value at idle, and a high throttle position value...all indicating a fuel delivery issue. Confirmed using a fuel pressure gauge (loaner available from an autoparts store) that the fuel pressure was less than half of what it should be for this vehicle (external fuel filter had already been changed by a shop). Diagnostic complete (replace fuel pump / pressure regulator / check valve / fuel level sensor with one OEM unit); we did not have the time or parts to fix during the holiday. Sister was very frustrated that none of the shops could diagnose the cause for the problem (reminded her that fault codes indicate issues with circuits and symptoms, but cannot tell you the cause). Guess I could have checked the GROUNDS. I learned simple diagnostics on lawnmower engines: fuel, air, spark, compression (timing was not an issue). Check those first.

Anyone that talks a big game on crank no starts is the first to go back to the writer for more diag time. While certain years and models can have some commonality, but it really only helps if you’re at a dealership. Indy shops don’t see that level of repetition.

Love you videos/ been watching and a member for quite a while but I never really could get your personality figured out UNTIL NOW! This is great. From the time you said GROUNDS until the end I kept laughing. Great video showing how ignorant people sound when the only advice they can give is from something they’ve “seen a thousand times” and they don’t actually have the knowledge or skills to correctly diag something with no help and no experience with identical symptoms.

That was very entertaining. I’ll have to modify my methods and go straight for the GROUNDS ( we call them earths) from now on lol.

I am a huge fan of sarcasm. The question that comes to my mind is if these professionals such clairvoyant knowledge by looking at your videos: why were they looking in the beginning there must be something that they didn't know or needed to learn. you must have a lot of Monday morning Quarterbacks they always know how to win the game everyone does things differently. what most don't know you could fix these cars so much faster if you weren't doing video. i do some things differently but most of the time it is just the order of events. i usually check for fire if fire is good then i spray something in the tbody to see if it starts then i know fuel is the problem thats just my way doesn't mean its the best. you are helping lots of people they need to understand some know more than others i have been a mechanic most of my life thought i knew a lot but i have learned a lot from you. experience many times changes the way we do things you teach totally different way to diag than trying to fix as fast as possible to make a living don't worry about those quarter backs

Very entertaining video. In my 50 plus years as an auto tech, here's what I would do. Start by spraying the flammable into the intake. This checks spark, and fuel delivery at once and in just a minute or two. If it starts you know about valve timing and compression too. Then power at relay and if so, beat on the tank. 5 minute diag.

the only time i go directly to hitting the bottom of the fuel tank is if the car is broke on side of road and customer calls and ask is there anything they can try to get to the shop without paying for a tow i tell them to have someone bang on fuel tank if it starts right up, they can possibly drive to shop to save the tow. lots of time it will start, and they drive to shop but i still when it gets there have to check wiring because the banging could have simply jarred a wire and made it start. i really enjoyed this video you did good and again don't let the Monday morning quarter backs get to you. sure after you find the problem it's easy to say why didn't you check that first. ITS LIKE LOOKING FOR A LOST TOOL IT IS ALWAYS THE LAST PLACE YOU LOOK WHY DIDN'T YOU LOOK THERE FIRST?

The only reason to go to directly to a component without any deduction is on experience AND it doesn't cost you more time then a couple of minutes. By example, I am mechanic on trains. When 2 lights by the door are out I know by experience it's most likely 1 bulb, because of the serie connection between them. It takes 1 minute and is 95 percent of the times the solution. If it isn't a bulb, out come the schematics and tools.

I suggest people who face the same problem that their fuel pump works after banging on the fuel tank then before changing the pump try adding additives to your car. There are lot of additives which clean the fuel system. they do not claim to clean the fuel pump but fuel pump gets cleaned most of the times. It will cost you may be 20 dollars, if that does not work then go ahead and replace the pump.

Stop listening to those you who they don't know what they're talking about it takes a certain amount of diagnostics to figure out what the problem is and to do it correctly if it takes you 5 minutes if it takes you an hour or if it takes you 10 hours it doesn't matter it's a matter of finding the problem and if they think they can do it faster will let him have it that's the way I look at it but stop listening to them your doing a great job you're teaching kids and that don't know anything about automotive industries that need to learn it you're teaching them something so stop worrying about it just keep doing what you do

Why are they not doing videos? Scared of people praising their methods? Probably scared to fail! If you don’t upload a video, it can’t fail. Challenge them to a live stream and they can tell you what is each step! (Lol) Maybe not! Back to you being wrong. If you are wrong and your method sucks and you fix them anyway, keep being wrong! I've been watching you talk on this video for 2 minutes and 45 seconds and every single word you have said is 100% truth people always say stuff like that but you know what they'll never say it before you fix the car they always say it after you fix the car because they don't know

One method that works very well for me is a deep interrogation of the customer. I never take a car without a good conversation with the owner. I want to know what happened how it happened were it happened even the weather at the time. Everything. Most of the times they will leave you clues on were to start. If you can make the customer make car/engine noises, even better.

Abduction takes over after a period of time of using other types of reasoning and is much faster. It's why I call my mechanic who is an expert on Volkswagens when I have an issue and he is right 99% of the time without even having to look at the car. Granted, abduction is based in years of slower methodical reasoning. But, you're right, for didactic reasons, you need a procedure.

I am not one of your haters, you have to crank the engine every time to listen to the cranking cadence to listen for a possible compression or mechanical problem, this first key on is when you listen for the fuel pump prime so that #1 step is done in combo to view idiot lights with the MIL. As you have mentioned, there is not always a fuel pump prime, it is up to you, the tech, to keep records on non-priming vehicles, at least the fuel pump prime is literally the first step to eliminate before actually turning the key to START to catch the NO CRANK or CRANK NO START, or WOW that cranks like shit, or that cranks like no compression on ONE or MORE cylinders. Thank you for proving your method is SOUND, sorry, I meant GROUNDED. An AMP RAMP on the running fuel pump would have been my final call, a dead commutator to show the customer is golden, cheers. A direct method so you can update your method, key on, MIL on, no prime, your notes tell you this is a priming vehicle, spray starter fluid in intake, the engine has good cranking cadence and starts and dies, spark verified, major diag DONE. Beat on the tank, the vehicle starts, and no misfire or running rough, compression verified, AMP RAMP fuel pump to visually verify bad component, less than 5 minutes. ALL areas tested in the case of no fuel, crank, no start. In this scenario, no need to check spark, compression, timing, OR IMMO, so fuel is the first place to go when you don't know where to go.

I have 12 diesel techs in my maintenance department. It’s funny because every time there is a more complex issue that takes the tech a bit longer to diagnose, it always draws the attention of at least two other techs (of which neither are at the same skill level as the diagnostician) who will wander over and offer up “helpful” tips to speed up the diagnostics process. But the funny part is, once the problem Is solved and the cause is shared with the “helpful” techs, 100% of the time one of them will say “yeah, that’s what I thought was wrong”. Very frustrating to the diagnostician.

The Fastec method is the best thing I learned from you Matt. It is so easy to remember and practically takes into account everything related to engine operation, even if it is not in my native language, I still remember individual elements :). I only have a question for you, because I see in the comments that you use the term FasTTec and not Fastec. Can you explain the distinction between Timing(mechanical) and Timing(ignition)? Until now I thought that T simply stood for Timing.
