Great video! There's an excellent book written by Edward Young called "One of our Submarines" a memoir of the career of HMS Storm a later S class boat.

Lutzow was a pocket battleship ex Deutschland renamed to prevent having a ship so named lost. 👍🏻

A small point: It is not "the" HMS whatever because that expands to "The His (or Her) Majesty's Ship" which is obviously wrong. It is just "HMS ..." 👍😃

Well the R/N had very good subs and commanders It was a R/N sub that sank a U Boat Italian Sub and Japanese sub a feat not equalled in WW2 And it was the R/N sub that sank a U boat whilst both subs were submerged

Strange, I don't know of any uboats lost that early, one would think it would be known which fired the first apparent torpedo of the war hit or miss.

To be honest I couldn't of gone on the submarines ! Bravest of the brave I think The backbone all those crews had Deserves the respect and recognition these stories tell, A fantastic way to learn and remember the known and not so known history. And told excellently with a human voice

Bravery is a mysterious human quality. Ìt may found skin-deep or at the deepest depth of subconsciousness. It's shy to show when openly asked for but appears like a lightning flash when least expected.

@@HiddenHistoryYT There's a lot of politics in the RN. Possibly he came from the "wrong" family or perhaps he inadvertantly offended a superior who could pull strings. A great shame as obviously a capable and brave man and a natural leader of men.

the shape of british submarines is somewhat strange as many of them had a bow profile bigger and higher than the rest of the body looking more like a warship with submerging capabilities than a true sub....

Fabulous telling, harrowing history. No mention of tonnage sunk, perhaps very little by the British Subs as mainly for patrol or convoy guard, or?....

Thanks Simon! And great point about the tonnage, I’ll see if I can find some exact numbers here. So far I haven’t been able to find any numbers and just some mentions of type of vessels, which probably wouldn’t add up to very much tonnage like you say. Check out my video on the USS Tang which sank from that. (Very poor quality in my opinion compared to my recent videos as it was one of my very first videos ever). The British did not name Subs after fish, the Yanks did. At the beginning of the war they were known by # alone.

HMS Spearfish (N69) was an S Class boat, all were given names beginning with the letter S

You need to get the facts right before making false claims. The Royal Navy (as well as the "Yanks" as you so politely put it) named all of their ships including boats (subs). One "S" boat being HMS Spearfish. Check it out on wikipedia. If you put your glasses on you will see in the video a photo of a Spearfish emblem on the actual sub.

At present my nephew is serving aboard S123: HMS Anson (note the name) an Astute class sub. And I repeat the Royal Navy did name thier subs. If you have an issue with wiki then take it up with them. Ask them how and why they made up that info.

Harry Martin is quite right. At the beginning of the war, the S boats had a pretty torrid time. There was another boat called HMS Sunfish lost about this time too. I think Seahorse was another.
