"No te Vayas de Zamboanga" - Spanish/Filipino Folk Song (1898)

"No Te Vayas de Zamboanga"", or simply known as "Zamboanga", is a Zamboangueño Spanish folk song written by Juan Cuadrado, Sr., a Spaniard who decided to stay in Zamboanga after the Spanish soldiers left the country.
This song was used in a Zarzuela entitled "De Cavite A Zamboanga". In this Zarzuela, a Caviteña sings this song to her boyfriend who is going to Zamboanga. This is probably why there are versions wherein this song is titled No Te Vayas A Zamboanga. In fact, the English version of this song is translated from No Te Vayas A Zamboanga (Don't you go to far Zamboanga). This title however doesn't sit well among Zamboangueños, especially as the city's image is already tarnished by several bombings and some terrorist attacks in the past.

During the American period, the song was also translated into English. There are two English variants of the song. The more well-known version is a closer translation from the original lyrics. The other more infamous English version, starting with the line "The Monkeys Have no Tails in Zamboanga", was sung by American soldiers to mock the Filipinos, in line with the racial biases of the time.

I am an Ilocana-Zamboangueña breed... and i grew up in zamboanga raised in a chavacano-speaking home when i was with my momand dad and spoke Ilocano when i was with my father's folks. I learned to sing this song from my Spanish-speaking grandmother herself a chavacana. And read and sang its musical score under my grade school teachers where we were issued a music book for each grade level. In that book was a story of 2 lovers: a beautiful girl and her soldier sweetheart. Both do NOT come from Zamboanga. The girl pleads with her lover NOT TO GO TO FAR ZAMBOANGA where she may be forgotten. Originally, then, this is NOT a Zamboanga Folk Song... but a Spanish-Filipino Folk song maybe... I remember pretty well the lyrics of the song: The girl sings: No Te VAS, No Te VAS A Zamboanga, (Don't you GO TO far Zamboanga) Que me puedes, que me puedes olvidar; (That you MAY forget me) No Te Vas, No Te Vas, No me dejes (Don't you GO, don't you GO, Don't leave me) Porque sin ti, no puedo estar (For without you, i cannot stay) Soldier-lover replies: No llores, Paloma mia (Don't you cry, my DOVE{darling} No llores que volvere (Don't cry, am coming home) Se en cuando a Zamboanga llegue (When in Zamboanga i arrive) Paloma mia, ti escribire (My DOVE{darling} i write you Con una pluma de ave (With a feather of bird) Y un pedazo de papel (And a piece of paper) Con sangre de mis venas (With blood of my veins) Paloma mia, ti escribi (My DOVE{darling}, i write you.) My college instructors in Spanish(i took Spanish I @ WEMSU-Zamboanga City; & Spanish II- IV in 2 different colleges) loved this song so much. (Just for fun, in our growing years we revised without permission the last line: Se en cuando a Zamboanga llegue (When in Zamboanga we arrive) Paloma mia, ti olvidare... (My Dove{darling}, YOU i will forget)... Nevertheless, let's uphold the sentiment of the composer expressed in this beautiful song... Enjoy singing

thanks for clarifying about if the singers were originally going to or leaving zamboanga. i never knew which one it was because some people online said it was one and some said it was the other. just a small correction: it would be "no te vayas" and also just "en cuando a zamboanga llegue"
