Ha ha, you got me thinking about my neighbor's car. I never see these kind of things in my own vehicles, good maintenance holds off many gremlins. Intermittents are corrosion or bad joints, and across platforms it's main power, ground straps, 5V reference or a central module.

My brother's 74 Monte Carlo had an ignition problem under load decades ago. I ruled out everything from the coil to the plugs and began suspecting the timing chain. He had just replaced the plug wires 3 months earlier. When we pulled the timing cover, the nylon teeth on the gear were jusssstttt beginning to chip a little and there was a crack in the nylon gear ring clear down to the steel. I thought AHA! Found It! The car had 180,000 miles on it so I thought as long as we were in there, get new gears (all steel and no nylon teeth) and get a new chain. Got it all back together and fired it up and the same darn dawg-gone problem haunted us. Talk about being fit-to-be-tied! I tore my hair out and my brother had pulled one of the new wires out from a steel bracket and asked me, , , "is this bad?" Almost brand new %&*^$# plug wires and the insulation broke down to ground. OH MAN I was so angry at myself. God, I was livid. How could I be so stupid????? Now the gears and chain were coming close to being replaced so maybe I saved him from a failure on the road somewhere but Oh God, I was so damned mad at myself for missing that. . . . . . Ever have one of those days? I learned a lot that day. ASSUME NOTHING! That definitely made me a better troubleshooter for the next 35 or so years. Toward the end of my career I was telling that story in class and one of my students said Mr. K, your face is getting red. I thought yeah! I'm still pissed about it! As I write this, it STILL eats at me a little . . . . But it made me a better troubleshooter. God has my brother now and he got 250,000 miles out of that car before we had to put it down. The engine and trans were still tight but it died a horrible death from rust (old recycled steel). He was so humble about finding that problem. It's been 15 years since I lost my brother and I still miss working on cars with him. . . . Kenny, you have my fondest respect as a great troubleshooter and teacher! I wonder how many people would have started chasing codes instead of checking the battery terminals first. We'd all like to meet the guy who put that battery terminal on and humbly remind him not to forget to tighten it. Best Wishes, Tom K

That's an awesome story Tom !! I'm sorry about the loss of your brother. I lost my cousin George suddenly just a year ago. He was the older brother I never had. We used to fool around with cars from the time we were teenager's . We still did occasionally Until the last few years when his health declined . Miss those days Most of my troubleshooting experience comes from learning by missing something I should have caught right from the get-go . I still get fired up thinking about a few things here n there . I'll tell you one funny story about my cousin. When we were in HS. He had a Chevy Monza V8 . It was slow but really cool . Looked fast , but wasn't . So when they're not fast , you chrome everything . He even had a chrome exhaust . Anyway , I was working on the street on my car and he comes roaring down the road and just before he pulls up , his chrome glass pack (Cherry Bomb) muffler fell off. Her gets out and goes to pick it up with both hands . As he picks it up his eyes get HUGE !! He holds the muffler over his head and starts screaming while looking around , then throws the muffler onto some grass , runs over to the hose and starts running cold water on his hand that now have burns !! I asked why he didnt just drop the muffler and he exclaimed , "I didnt want to scratch the chrome" !!! (After the thing just slid 50 feet down the pavement" ... We laughed our asses off and it stayed an inside joke for 40 years !!! Thanks Tom !! You made me smile today !!

That's why GM came out with TSB's and a torque spec for the battery cable bolts. Prevents loose cables and all the problems they cause in all their vehicles with the side terminals.

someone explain this in non mechanic terms. Seems like as of 2012 they still had the old connectors that come loose with age as i'm just learning after buying a 2012 chevy

We had the neighborhood " pain in the ass " bang on my door for a jump . His Chevy pick up needed a jump and I was told a starter . I told him I check the battery FIRST and all connections . His terminals were both more loose than yours . While I proceeded to snug them he's screaming " it needs a starter " , which it did . He has several GM side terminal vehicles sitting with the battery disconnected and ALWAYS uses PLIERS on the 5/16" cable bolt ! You can't teach an old dog ! Batteries and grounds can cause many problems .
