Few crops fit the no-till system as well as carrots, not to mention their ability to fly off the market table, so here are some strategies we use on our farm to get carrots on the market table all summer.

Is is my 1er ear with the korean natural farming fertilizer and it work very well Did you put some fertilizer in your carrot like feed one week the leaf and the oder week feed the root

I was very confused about the no-til situation because in proverbs 28:17 it speaks about tilling the land. Until I looked at the Hebrew and the word used is עבד ebed which is to serve, or work. It does not speak about turning over the soil but about working in the garden. However, in the beginning stages it's important to turn organic matter into claylike soil to improve it's structure, drainage, aeration etc.

Which roller do you use for Atlas? I just seeded some and seemed like Jang was grabbing 3/4 seeds every time with XY-24.

So is the system sow pelleted carrot seed with Jang then cover with compost mulch, then flame? Or are you spreading compost on beds and seeding into that? Carrot germ isn’t affected by the mulch layer? Thanks for posting! Carrots are a great $$ maker for us too but always looking for easier seeding and weeding strategies!

You can do either, but you don’t necessarily need pelleted seeds. In fact, I don’t usually have to flame if planting into deep compost, but if planting that way the compost can get dry so you need to stay on the water for sure! My preference is directly into compost in mid March in our zone. The compost is dark so it’s warm and the germ is fast and consistent, plus weed free. Best method I’ve found. Far and away. Makes harvest easier too!

Ag 30 in winter, ag 15 in summer for germination or nothing

what sort of compost are you using? the compost we have here is well rotted farmyard manure, which is excellent, beautiful stuff, but probably too rich for carrots.

What do you use to sow your carrots 🥕 also what spacing? I.e # of rows on a 30” bed? They look great btw👍🏼

Great question! For non irrigated beds I do 5 or 6 rows with the jang now. Wil lgo up to 8 or 9 with irrigated beds. I used the earthway for years but there really is no comparison for carrots. Spacing is perfect.

What variety do you use for the Parisian Market? I've grown Atlas from Johnny's and wasn't impressed (maybe bad conditions?). I'm trying introduce carrots at our urban farm, where we have about 12-16 inches of soil on top of asphalt. Looking for varieties that would perform well in our shallow depth. Have had good luck with Yaya and Mokum in raised beds, but not sure how the shallow soil depth would affect them.

I believe he said Atlas works for him in video. But one thing I find difficult with Atlas is consistent supply of seed.

okay. how do you pull lettuce but leave roots? I wanted to leave the roots in a bed of lettuce i needed to pull so i pulled a bit, took pruning shears & cut just below the soil but that's not ideal bc of how time & labor-intensive that is. can you expand? thx!

Winter is mostly about storage. We've done okay growing mokum and danvers seeded in october and pulling in feb but greening gets bad. Sweet as heck though. Yes, bed flips are labor intensive. No way around it. We've been experimenting with the weed whacker method lately and just cutting them out close to surface which takes some finesse but is really effective and may be less invasive than a hoe.

Oh man... some Amish store in Scottsville, KY six years ago. It was a heck of a deal, but I could not even kind of tell you how to find it haha. That said, these are pretty standard harvest bins. You should be able to track them down by “yellow stackable harvest bin”

Where are you located? You mentioned that your lettuce is coming out but I had to pull all my cool weather crops by mid April. It’s so darn hot here. (Savannah Georgia). I’m having trouble growing anything in this heat.

We're in central ky. Were not quite as hot as you but we will plant and harvest lettuce all year. Check out Ray Tyler's work. Hes south of memphis and doing the same!

Rough Draft Farmstead thank you! I’ve always had a garden but I’m new to market gardening. I’m learning how to farm commercially through KZfaq. This has been my dream for over ten years but I lack experience and have been learning the hard way. Lol! We are on 20 acres in South Georgia.

How are you sowing? If using a Jang, what roller? I'm using the YYJ24, 7 rows on a 30 inch bed. The 'in-row' spacing seems too tight.

I'm using xy-24 with 9 back 14 front. In row spacing os pretty spot on for that. What are your gears at?

@@notillgrowers I've not thought of the gearing ratio. I was mistaken, I am using the XY as well (Thanks Curtis for doing the R&D on that one!) I will have to check my ratios. Whatever I'm at, I like it for all my salad greens, but is too tight for carrots. I'm guessing that will do the trick. Cheers!

That’s a big question. Soil prep? Financially? Physically? Tool-Wise? There’s a lot to tackle. Start by scanning the channel first and see what you can glean then let me know if you have specific questions.

Since you Purchase Mulch do you Break Even... How Often do you have to Replenish the Carrot Mulch... 50ft takes a lot of Mulch

Initial bed set up is about 1.5 yards for 100ft by 30in bed. After that it is less than half to replenish. Maybe a quarter. In some cases a light dusting. Depends on bed. It's a lot of mulch to start for sure but each bed is worth ~$500 to $750

What about washing and storing carrots to keep them fresh? For example once you cut the tops off and wash the carrots, do you dry them and then put them in bags and put into a cooler, or can you leave them wet after washing and them bag and store them in the cooler? How long will they last and stay crisp and fresh?

Yes, gently wash and pack into plastic bags with greens totally removed. They will last for weeks and weeks that way, sometimes even improving in flavor!

You sell with tops on? I thought that was bad for the nutritional quality of the end product?

Absolutely. They sell 1000 times better with tops on but we do tell people to remove them for storage. For sure.

PureHarvestFarm Curtis stone also sells with the tops on and then pulls them off for the buyer but if you’re not in a very health conscious area, the tops are great for potential buyers to see freshness

The tops are better for you than the root. You are getting more for your money with tops on ...as long as they are organic

What do you do about voles in no till carrots? Carrots seem to be the one crop i HAVE TO till or all the carrots will be stunted from vole tunnels. Tilling seems to be the only way to collapse the tunnels.

Depends on the size. We start with “baby-ish” carrots and usually bunch closer to ten, then move on to fewer per bunch as they size up. It’s hard to say, really, just depends on the carrot and the goal for them. Sorry if that’s not helpful--these things can be frustrating

You said you are getting $2.50/bunch. How many carrots/bunch?

Ten to twelve baby-ish carrots right now. We sell everything on our table at 1 for $3 or 2 for $5. So some sold at $3 but i just say 2.50 a pop, though the average is a little higher.
