When planting Brassicas/Tubers, your mentioning seed thin and fill in bare spots later, is excellent advice. Brassica/turnip seeds are so small, people commonly overseed.

We were frost free in the hills, we planted improved pasture. Legumes to supply o2 to other grasses. We'd strip graze in small paddocks. Once a year when fed down (it would be over the cows heads)and once a hand spread super phosphate from a bucket and belt over the shoulder. We'd drag 1/2 bags up the hill with us. I was fitter at 18 yo dad was 40. He ran rings around me lol. He's currently 98. Hard work is obviously good for you

Food plots are looking good!!! Love seeing more and more hunters getting into no-till. Quick tip on getting the clover to take off- try planting your perennial clovers in the fall with a nurse crop of oat, wheat, or rye. In TN oats or wheat are probably the way to go. The cereal grains will give you some tonnage that first fall and allow the clover to get established so it gets a jump on the weeds the following spring. Perennial clovers can be planted in the spring but its always going to be an uphill fight against the weeds. If you need to plant in spring, you can also try adding in some annual clovers like balansa, crimson, or arrow leaf along with some spring oats or triticale to act as a nurse crop. The annual clovers and spring grains should jump out of the ground to help you get ahead of the weeds as well as providing great food/cover for fawning and turkey season. Once the grains are in the dough stage by mid-may/early june, you can mow or crimp the grain and you should be left with a nice clover plot for the fall season. You sound like us, we are in the very southeastern triangle of Ky. Don’t like the weather wait 15 mins. Brassica is hit from thanksgiving to February usually. Clover is everywhere here so no point in planting that. Young Rye, wheat, oats, peas, n beans are a great early season draw til frost hits in late October n turns brown. Our season comes in usually first Saturday in sept. So we have like 6 weeks where that’s hit, than corn usually from them til the brassicas are starting to be hit.

I use my Ventrac 4500Z with the aerivator and seed box. I first mow the field down and low as I can go. Then run the aerivator owner the land in different directions then I add the seed into the seed box and plant the grass. The box has a 5" roller that pack the seed into the loose soil. Your way works as well.

Looks great for no till

Looks like the no till farming worked. Keeps more moisture in the ground which the seedlings need.

I use a eartway hand held spreader I believe it’s model 2750 allows me too carry approximately 30# at a time I just walk north and south as well as east west generally does the trick for me my plot is approximately 3/4 of an acre so I apply more than enough buckwheat too do the job

About the time to put down an application of Urea (about 4 or 5 weeks growth) I've mowed/brush hogged the grass and weeds growing above the tops of the clover and brassicas with very little impact to the plot.

Looking good congrats I find spraying glyphosate and 2-4d in Mid may allowing it too do it’s thing then 2nd week in June pread approximately 50# of buckwheat give 7-8 weeks then I spread whatever my fall plot blend may be into the standing buckwheat rollover it and if need be spray glyphosate once again only avoid 2-4d at this time it could stay in the soil for 60 days would mess things up anyway that is what has worked for me just thought I would share

We have had little success with no till over the past few years. After broadcasting we had no rain for three weeks, our no till did not do well at all. We are about 10" less rain this year. We will probably go back to tilling next year. I think the key to no till is planing to broadcast your seed with rain in the forecast. It is also difficult for us to broadcast the seed into the tall buckwheat and get good coverage.

how much fertilizer do you use per acre/or lime. No till is what I want to try per Paul my food plot is 1 and a half acres and rocky. any suggestions. I live in Ma. Berkshire Mts. Gets cold and freeze’s early. Thanks.

Got a bit of a different twist, planted buckwheat in the rain, 0 germination, clover in different area, 0 germination. Going back to drawing board. Not really interested in deer plots but native flowers for my bees. Got a different idea?
